Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.1On the first day of the week, early in the morning and while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and noticed that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,” she said, “and we do not know where they have put Him!”2So she ran off and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus kept loving. She told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"
Then Peter and the other disciple set out for the tomb.3So Peter and the other disciple took off for the tomb.
The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.4The two of them were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and came to the tomb first.
He bent down and looked in at the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.5Bending over to look inside, he noticed the linen cloths lying there, but didn't go in.
Simon Peter arrived just after him. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.6At this point Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went straight into the tomb. He observed that the linen cloths were lying there,
The cloth that had been around Jesus’ head was rolled up, lying separate from the linen cloths.7and that the handkerchief that had been on Jesus' head was not lying with the linen cloths but was rolled up in a separate place.
Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in. And he saw and believed.8Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, went inside, looked, and believed.
For they still did not understand from the Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.9For they did not yet understand the Scripture that said that Jesus had to rise from the dead.
Then the disciples returned to their homes.10So the disciples went back to their homes.
But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent down to look into the tomb,11Meanwhile, Mary stood crying outside the tomb. As she cried, she bent over and looked into the tomb.
and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and the other at the feet.12She saw two angels in white clothes who were sitting down, one at the head and the other at the foot of the place where Jesus' body had been lying.
“Woman, why are you weeping?” they asked. “Because they have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I do not know where they have put Him.”13They asked her, "Lady, why are you crying?" She told them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don't know where they have put him."
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there; but she did not recognize that it was Jesus.14After she had said this, she turned around and noticed Jesus standing there, without realizing that it was Jesus.
“Woman, why are you weeping?” Jesus asked. “Whom are you seeking?” Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him off, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.”15Jesus asked her, "Dear lady, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she told him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away."
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).16Jesus told her, "Mary!" She turned around and told him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means "Teacher").
“Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’ ”17Jesus told her, "Don't hold on to me, because I haven't yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I'm ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"
Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what He had said to her.18So Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I've seen the Lord!" She also told them what he had told her.
It was the first day of the week, and that very evening, while the disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you!” He said to them.19It was the evening of the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them. He told them, "Peace be with you."
After He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.20After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side, and when they saw the Lord, the disciples were overjoyed.
Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so also I am sending you.”21Jesus told them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you."
When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.22When he had said this, he breathed on them and told them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.”23If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven. If you retain people's sins, they are retained."
Now Thomas called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.24Thomas, one of the Twelve (called the Twin), wasn't with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”25So the other disciples kept telling him, "We've seen the Lord!" But he told them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger into them, and put my hand into his side, I'll never believe!"
Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”26A week later, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were shut, Jesus came, stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you."
Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.”27Then he told Thomas, "Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Take your hand, and put it into my side. Stop doubting, but believe."
Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!”28Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"
Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”29Jesus told him, "Is it because you've seen me that you have believed? How blessed are those who have never seen me and yet have believed!"
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book.30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not recorded in this book.
But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.31But these have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and so that through believing you may have life in his name.
