This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD.1The LORD spoke to Jeremiah.
"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Write on a scroll all the words that I have spoken to you,2"The LORD God of Israel says, 'Write everything that I am about to tell you in a scroll.
for look, the days are coming"--this is the LORD's declaration--"when I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel and Judah," says the LORD. "I will restore them to the land I gave to their ancestors and they will possess it."3For I, the LORD, affirm that the time will come when I will reverse the plight of my people, Israel and Judah,' says the LORD. 'I will bring them back to the land I gave their ancestors and they will take possession of it once again.'"
These are the words the LORD spoke to Israel and Judah.4So here is what the LORD has to say about Israel and Judah.
This is what the LORD says: We have heard a cry of terror, of dread--there is no peace.5Yes, here is what he says: "You hear cries of panic and of terror; there is no peace in sight.
Ask and see whether a male can give birth. Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor and every face turned pale?6Ask yourselves this and consider it carefully: Have you ever seen a man give birth to a baby? Why then do I see all these strong men grabbing their stomachs in pain like a woman giving birth? And why do their faces turn so deathly pale?
How awful that day will be! There will be no other like it! It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it.7Alas, what a terrible time of trouble it is! There has never been any like it. It is a time of trouble for the descendants of Jacob, but some of them will be rescued out of it.
On that day--this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies--I will break his yoke from your neck and tear off your chains, and strangers will never again enslave him.8When the time for them to be rescued comes," says the LORD who rules over all, "I will rescue you from foreign subjugation. I will deliver you from captivity. Foreigners will then no longer subjugate them.
They will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.9But they will be subject to the LORD their God and to the Davidic ruler whom I will raise up as king over them.
As for you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid--this is the LORD's declaration--and do not be discouraged, Israel, for without fail I will save you out of a distant place, your descendants, from the land of their captivity! Jacob will return and have calm and quiet with no one to frighten him.10So I, the LORD, tell you not to be afraid, you descendants of Jacob, my servants. Do not be terrified, people of Israel. For I will rescue you and your descendants from a faraway land where you are captives. The descendants of Jacob will return to their land and enjoy peace. They will be secure and no one will terrify them.
For I will be with you--this is the LORD's declaration--to save you! I will bring destruction on all the nations where I have scattered you; however, I will not bring destruction on you. I will discipline you justly, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.11For I, the LORD, affirm that I will be with you and will rescue you. I will completely destroy all the nations where I scattered you. But I will not completely destroy you. I will indeed discipline you, but only in due measure. I will not allow you to go entirely unpunished."
For this is what the LORD says: Your injury is incurable; your wound most severe.12Moreover, the LORD says to the people of Zion, "Your injuries are incurable; your wounds are severe.
You have no defender for your case. There is no remedy for your sores, and no healing for you.13There is no one to plead your cause. There are no remedies for your wounds. There is no healing for you.
All your lovers have forgotten you; they no longer look for you, for I have struck you as an enemy would, with the discipline of someone cruel, because of your enormous guilt and your innumerable sins.14All your allies have abandoned you. They no longer have any concern for you. For I have attacked you like an enemy would. I have chastened you cruelly. For your wickedness is so great and your sin is so much.
Why do you cry out about your injury? Your pain has no cure! I have done these things to you because of your enormous guilt and your innumerable sins.15Why do you complain about your injuries, that your pain is incurable? I have done all this to you because your wickedness is so great and your sin is so much.
Nevertheless, all who devoured you will be devoured, and all your adversaries--all of them--will go off into exile. Those who plunder you will be plundered, and all who raid you will be raided.16But all who destroyed you will be destroyed. All your enemies will go into exile. Those who plundered you will be plundered. I will cause those who pillaged you to be pillaged.
But I will bring you health and will heal you of your wounds--this is the LORD's declaration--for they call you Outcast, Zion whom no one cares about.17Yes, I will restore you to health. I will heal your wounds. I, the LORD, affirm it! For you have been called an outcast, Zion, whom no one cares for."
This is what the LORD says: I will certainly restore the fortunes of Jacob's tents and show compassion on his dwellings. Every city will be rebuilt on its mound; every citadel will stand on its proper site.18The LORD says, "I will restore the ruined houses of the descendants of Jacob. I will show compassion on their ruined homes. Every city will be rebuilt on its former ruins. Every fortified dwelling will occupy its traditional site.
Thanksgiving will come out of them, a sound of rejoicing. I will multiply them, and they will not decrease; I will honor them, and they will not be insignificant.19Out of those places you will hear songs of thanksgiving and the sounds of laughter and merriment. I will increase their number and they will not dwindle away. I will bring them honor and they will no longer be despised.
His children will be as in past days; his congregation will be established in my presence. I will punish all his oppressors.20The descendants of Jacob will enjoy their former privileges. Their community will be reestablished in my favor and I will punish all who try to oppress them.
Jacob's leader will be one of them; his ruler will issue from him. I will invite him to me, and he will approach me, for who would otherwise risk his life to approach me? This is the LORD's declaration.21One of their own people will be their leader. Their ruler will come from their own number. I will invite him to approach me, and he will do so. For no one would dare approach me on his own. I, the LORD, affirm it!
You will be my people, and I will be your God.22Then you will again be my people and I will be your God.
Look, a storm from the LORD! Wrath has gone out, a churning storm. It will whirl about the heads of the wicked.23Just watch! The wrath of the LORD will come like a storm. Like a raging storm it will rage down on the heads of those who are wicked.
The LORD's burning anger will not turn back until he has completely fulfilled the purposes of his heart. In time to come you will understand it.24The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he has fully carried out his intended purposes. In days to come you will come to understand this.
