English Standard VersionHolman Christian Standard Bible
Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble2Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that He has redeemed them from the hand of the foe
and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.3and has gathered them from the lands-- from the east and the west, from the north and the south.
Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in;4Some wandered in the desolate wilderness, finding no way to a city where they could live.
hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.5They were hungry and thirsty; their spirits failed within them.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He rescued them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in.7He led them by the right path to go to a city where they could live.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity.
For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.9For He has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things.
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons,10Others sat in darkness and gloom-- prisoners in cruel chains--
for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High.11because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the counsel of the Most High.
So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help.12He broke their spirits with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart.14He brought them out of darkness and gloom and broke their chains apart.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity.
For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.16For He has broken down the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars.
Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;17Fools suffered affliction because of their rebellious ways and their sins.
they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death.18They loathed all food and came near the gates of death.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress.
He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.20He sent His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity.
And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with shouts of joy.
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters;23Others went to sea in ships, conducting trade on the vast waters.
they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep.24They saw the LORD's works, His wonderful works in the deep.
For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea.25He spoke and raised a tempest that stirred up the waves of the sea.
They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight;26Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths, their courage melting away in anguish,
they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end.27they reeled and staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was useless.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.
He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.29He stilled the storm to a murmur, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.30They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet. Then He guided them to the harbor they longed for.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity.
Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.32Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,33He turns rivers into desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,
a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants.34and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants.
He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water.35He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water.
And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in;36He causes the hungry to settle there, and they establish a city where they can live.
they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield.37They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.
By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish.38He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their livestock decrease.
When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow,39When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow,
he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes;40He pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks.41But He lifts the needy out of their suffering and makes their families multiply like flocks.
The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth.42The upright see it and rejoice, and all injustice shuts its mouth.
Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.43Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things and consider the LORD's acts of faithful love.
