Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy
and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.3and gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in;4Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path to a city in which to dwell.
hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.5They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in.7He led them on a straight path to reach a city where they could live.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.9For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons,10Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and chains,
for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High.11because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help.12He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart.14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke away their chains.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.16For He has broken down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.
Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;17Fools, in their rebellious ways, and through their iniquities, suffered affliction.
they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death.18They loathed all food and drew near to the gates of death.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.20He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare His works with rejoicing.
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters;23Others went out to sea in ships, conducting trade on the mighty waters.
they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep.24They saw the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep.
For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea.25For He spoke and raised a tempest that lifted the waves of the sea.
They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight;26They mounted up to the heavens, then sunk to the depths; their courage melted in their anguish.
they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end.27They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and all their skill was useless.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.
He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.29He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.30They rejoiced in the silence, and He guided them to the harbor they desired.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.32Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,33He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water into thirsty ground,
a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants.34and fruitful land into fields of salt, because of the wickedness of its dwellers.
He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water.35He turns a desert into pools of water and a dry land into flowing springs.
And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in;36He causes the hungry to settle there, that they may establish a city in which to dwell.
they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield.37They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.
By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish.38He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their herds diminish.
When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow,39When they are decreased and humbled by oppression, evil, and sorrow,
he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes;40He pours out contempt on the nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks.41But He lifts the needy from affliction and increases their families like flocks.
The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth.42The upright see and rejoice, and all iniquity shuts its mouth.
Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.43Let him who is wise pay heed to these things and consider the loving devotion of the LORD.
