English Standard VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary
and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.3And gathered from the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south.
Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in;4They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; They did not find a way to an inhabited city.
hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.5They were hungry and thirsty; Their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in.7He led them also by a straight way, To go to an inhabited city.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.9For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons,10There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains,
for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High.11Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High.
So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help.12Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart.14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.16For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder.
Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;17Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death.18Their soul abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew near to the gates of death.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses.
He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.20He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!22Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing.
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters;23Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters;
they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep.24They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep.
For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea.25For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea.
They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight;26They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery.
they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end.27They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits' end.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses.
He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.29He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.30Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.32Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders.
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,33He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants.34A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water.35He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water;
And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in;36And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city,
they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield.37And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest.
By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish.38Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease.
When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow,39When they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, misery and sorrow,
he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes;40He pours contempt upon princes And makes them wander in a pathless waste.
but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks.41But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock.
The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth.42The upright see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.43Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD.
