I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,1Παρακαλῶ οὖν ὑμᾶς ἐγὼ δέσμιος ἐν Κυρίῳ ἀξίως περιπατῆσαι τῆς κλήσεως ἧς ἐκλήθητε
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,2μετὰ πάσης ταπεινοφροσύνης καὶ πραΰτητος μετὰ μακροθυμίας ἀνεχόμενοι ἀλλήλων ἐν ἀγάπῃ
eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.3σπουδάζοντες τηρεῖν τὴν ἑνότητα τοῦ Πνεύματος ἐν τῷ συνδέσμῳ τῆς εἰρήνης
There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—4ἓν σῶμα καὶ ἓν Πνεῦμα καθὼς καὶ ἐκλήθητε ἐν μιᾷ ἐλπίδι τῆς κλήσεως ὑμῶν
one Lord, one faith, one baptism,5εἷς Κύριος μία πίστις ἓν βάπτισμα
one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.6εἷς Θεὸς καὶ Πατὴρ πάντων ἐπὶ πάντων καὶ διὰ πάντων καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν
But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.7Ἑνὶ δὲ ἑκάστῳ ἡμῶν ἐδόθη χάρις κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”8διὸ λέγει Ἀναβὰς εἰς ὕψος ᾐχμαλώτευσεν αἰχμαλωσίαν (καὶ) ἔδωκεν δόματα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις
(In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth?9Τὸ δὲ Ἀνέβη τί ἐστιν εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη τῆς γῆς
He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)10 καταβὰς αὐτός ἐστιν καὶ ἀναβὰς ὑπεράνω πάντων τῶν οὐρανῶν ἵνα πληρώσῃ τὰ πάντα
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,11Καὶ αὐτὸς ἔδωκεν τοὺς μὲν ἀποστόλους τοὺς δὲ προφήτας τοὺς δὲ εὐαγγελιστάς τοὺς δὲ ποιμένας καὶ διδασκάλους
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,12πρὸς τὸν καταρτισμὸν τῶν ἁγίων εἰς ἔργον διακονίας εἰς οἰκοδομὴν τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,13μέχρι καταντήσωμεν οἱ πάντες εἰς τὴν ἑνότητα τῆς πίστεως καὶ τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς ἄνδρα τέλειον εἰς μέτρον ἡλικίας τοῦ πληρώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.14ἵνα μηκέτι ὦμεν νήπιοι κλυδωνιζόμενοι καὶ περιφερόμενοι παντὶ ἀνέμῳ τῆς διδασκαλίας ἐν τῇ κυβείᾳ* τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐν πανουργίᾳ πρὸς τὴν μεθοδείαν τῆς πλάνης
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,15ἀληθεύοντες δὲ ἐν ἀγάπῃ αὐξήσωμεν εἰς αὐτὸν τὰ πάντα ὅς ἐστιν κεφαλή Χριστός
from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.16ἐξ οὗ πᾶν τὸ σῶμα συναρμολογούμενον καὶ συμβιβαζόμενον διὰ πάσης ἁφῆς τῆς ἐπιχορηγίας κατ’ ἐνέργειαν ἐν μέτρῳ ἑνὸς ἑκάστου μέρους τὴν αὔξησιν τοῦ σώματος ποιεῖται εἰς οἰκοδομὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.17Τοῦτο οὖν λέγω καὶ μαρτύρομαι ἐν Κυρίῳ μηκέτι ὑμᾶς περιπατεῖν καθὼς καὶ τὰ ἔθνη περιπατεῖ ἐν ματαιότητι τοῦ νοὸς αὐτῶν
They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.18ἐσκοτωμένοι τῇ διανοίᾳ ὄντες ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι τῆς ζωῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν ἄγνοιαν τὴν οὖσαν ἐν αὐτοῖς διὰ τὴν πώρωσιν τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν
They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.19οἵτινες ἀπηλγηκότες ἑαυτοὺς παρέδωκαν τῇ ἀσελγείᾳ εἰς ἐργασίαν ἀκαθαρσίας πάσης ἐν πλεονεξίᾳ
But that is not the way you learned Christ!—20Ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἐμάθετε τὸν Χριστόν
assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,21εἴ γε αὐτὸν ἠκούσατε καὶ ἐν αὐτῷ ἐδιδάχθητε καθώς ἐστιν ἀλήθεια ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,22ἀποθέσθαι ὑμᾶς κατὰ τὴν προτέραν ἀναστροφὴν τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν φθειρόμενον κατὰ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τῆς ἀπάτης
and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,23ἀνανεοῦσθαι δὲ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ νοὸς ὑμῶν
and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.24καὶ ἐνδύσασθαι τὸν καινὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν κατὰ Θεὸν κτισθέντα ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ὁσιότητι τῆς ἀληθείας
Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.25Διὸ ἀποθέμενοι τὸ ψεῦδος λαλεῖτε ἀλήθειαν ἕκαστος μετὰ τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐσμὲν ἀλλήλων μέλη
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,26Ὀργίζεσθε καὶ μὴ ἁμαρτάνετε ἥλιος μὴ ἐπιδυέτω ἐπὶ [τῷ] παροργισμῷ ὑμῶν
and give no opportunity to the devil.27μηδὲ δίδοτε τόπον τῷ διαβόλῳ
Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.28 κλέπτων μηκέτι κλεπτέτω μᾶλλον δὲ κοπιάτω ἐργαζόμενος ταῖς ἰδίαις χερσὶν τὸ ἀγαθόν ἵνα ἔχῃ μεταδιδόναι τῷ χρείαν ἔχοντι
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.29Πᾶς λόγος σαπρὸς ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ὑμῶν μὴ ἐκπορευέσθω ἀλλὰ εἴ τις ἀγαθὸς πρὸς οἰκοδομὴν τῆς χρείας ἵνα δῷ χάριν τοῖς ἀκούουσιν
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.30Καὶ μὴ λυπεῖτε τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν ἐσφραγίσθητε εἰς ἡμέραν ἀπολυτρώσεως
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.31Πᾶσα πικρία καὶ θυμὸς καὶ ὀργὴ καὶ κραυγὴ καὶ βλασφημία ἀρθήτω ἀφ’ ὑμῶν σὺν πάσῃ κακίᾳ
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.32γίνεσθε δὲ εἰς ἀλλήλους χρηστοί εὔσπλαγχνοι χαριζόμενοι ἑαυτοῖς καθὼς καὶ Θεὸς ἐν Χριστῷ ἐχαρίσατο ὑμῖν
