English Standard VersionNew International Version
And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.1Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.
And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”2Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.”3At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!"
But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?4Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?
For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?5Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic— “Rise, pick up your bed and go home.”6But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." So he said to the paralyzed man, "Get up, take your mat and go home."
And he rose and went home.7Then the man got up and went home.
When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.8When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.
As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.
And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.12On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”13But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”14Then John's disciples came and asked him, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?"
And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.15Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made.16"No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”17Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."
While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”18While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, "My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live."
And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples.19Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment,20Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.
for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.”21She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed."
Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.22Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed at that moment.
And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,23When Jesus entered the synagogue leader's house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,
he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him.24he said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at him.
But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.25After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.
And the report of this went through all that district.26News of this spread through all that region.
And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.”27As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"
When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.”28When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied.
Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.”29Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith let it be done to you";
And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.”30and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one knows about this."
But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.31But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.
As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him.32While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus.
And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.”33And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel."
But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”34But the Pharisees said, "It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons."
And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.
therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."
