For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. God, we have heard with our ears-- our ancestors have told us-- the work You accomplished in their days, in days long ago: 1For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.
to plant them, You drove out the nations with Your hand; to settle them, You crushed the peoples. 2With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out.
For they did not take the land by their sword-- their arm did not bring them victory-- but by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You were pleased with them. 3For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.
You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. 4You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob.
Through You we drive back our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. 5Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies.
For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. 6For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me.
But You give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. 7For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame.
We boast in God all day long; we will praise Your name forever. Selah 8In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah
But You have rejected and humiliated us; You do not march out with our armies. 9But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.
You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. 10You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us.
You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. 11You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations.
You sell Your people for nothing; You make no profit from selling them. 12You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale.
You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. 13You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.
You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. 14You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.
My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, 15All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face,
because of the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. 16at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge.
All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. 17All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant.
Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. 18Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path.
But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. 19But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.
If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
wouldn't God have found this out, since He knows the secrets of the heart? 21would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?
Because of You we are slain all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. 22Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
Wake up, LORD! Why are You sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever! 23Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever.
Why do You hide Yourself and forget our affliction and oppression? 24Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression?
For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. 25For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth.
Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of Your faithful love. 26Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion.
