Psalm 44
HCSB Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. God, we have heard with our ears-- our ancestors have told us-- the work You accomplished in their days, in days long ago: 1O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old:
to plant them, You drove out the nations with Your hand; to settle them, You crushed the peoples. 2you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free;
For they did not take the land by their sword-- their arm did not bring them victory-- but by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You were pleased with them. 3for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them.
You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. 4You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob!
Through You we drive back our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. 5Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us.
For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. 6For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me.
But You give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. 7But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us.
We boast in God all day long; we will praise Your name forever. Selah 8In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah
But You have rejected and humiliated us; You do not march out with our armies. 9But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies.
You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. 10You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. 11You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations.
You sell Your people for nothing; You make no profit from selling them. 12You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them.
You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. 13You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us.
You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. 14You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.
My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, 15All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face
because of the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. 16at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.
All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. 17All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant.
Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. 18Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way;
But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. 19yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death.
If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
wouldn't God have found this out, since He knows the secrets of the heart? 21would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart.
Because of You we are slain all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. 22Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.
Wake up, LORD! Why are You sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever! 23Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever!
Why do You hide Yourself and forget our affliction and oppression? 24Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. 25For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground.
Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of Your faithful love. 26Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!
