| 1An oracle against the Valley of Vision: What's the matter with you? Why have all of you gone up to the rooftops? | 1A message concerning the Valley of Vision. "What troubles you, now that you've all gone up to the rooftops, |
| 2The noisy city, the jubilant town, is filled with revelry. Your dead did not die by the sword; they were not killed in battle. | 2you who are full of commotion, you passionate city, you rollicking town? Your slain weren't killed by the sword, nor are they dead in battle. |
| 3All your rulers have fled together, captured without a bow. All your fugitives were captured together; they had fled far away. | 3All your leaders have fled together; she is captured without using bows. All of you who were caught were captured together, although they had fled while the enemy was still far away. |
| 4Therefore I said," Look away from me! Let me weep bitterly! Do not try to comfort me about the destruction of my dear people." | 4Therefore I said: "Look away from me; and let me weep bitter tears; don't try to console me over the destruction of the daughter of my people." |
| 5For the Lord GOD of Hosts had a day of tumult, trampling, and confusion in the Valley of Vision-- people shouting and crying to the mountains; | 5For to the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies belongs the day of tumult, trampling, and confusion in the Valley of Vision, and the pulling down of his Temple on its mountain. |
| 6Elam took up a quiver with chariots and horsemen, and Kir uncovered the shield. | 6Elam takes up the quiver with chariots and cavalry, while Kir unsheathes the shield. |
| 7Your best valleys were full of chariots, and horsemen were positioned at the gates. | 7And it will come about that your choicest valleys will be filled with chariots, and horsemen will take their positions at the gates. |
| 8He removed the defenses of Judah. On that day you looked to the weapons in the House of the Forest. | 8He has uncovered the defenses of Judah." At that time, you looked at the arsenal of the Palace of the Forest, |
| 9You saw that there were many breaches in the walls of the city of David. You collected water from the lower pool. | 9and saw that there were many breaches in the City of David. So you stored up water from the Lower Pool, |
| 10You counted the houses of Jerusalem so that you could tear them down to fortify the wall. | 10counted the houses of Jerusalem, tore down certain houses to strengthen the wall, |
| 11You made a reservoir between the walls for the waters of the ancient pool, but you did not look to the One who made it, or consider the One who created it long ago. | 11and built a reservoir between the walls to store water from the Old Pool. But you did not look at the One who did it, nor did you see the One who planned it long ago. |
| 12On that day the Lord GOD of Hosts called for weeping, for wailing, for shaven heads, and for the wearing of sackcloth. | 12On that day the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies called for weeping and mourning, for shaving heads and wearing sackcloth. |
| 13But look: joy and gladness, butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep, eating of meat, and drinking of wine--" Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!" | 13But look! There is joy and festivity, slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep, eating meat and drinking wine. "Let us eat and drink, you say, because we die tomorrow." |
| 14The LORD of Hosts has directly revealed to me:" This sin of yours will never be wiped out." The Lord GOD of Hosts has spoken. | 14"Nevertheless, the LORD of the Heavenly Armies has revealed himself to my hearing: '"Surely because of you this iniquity will not be forgiven you until you die,' says the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies." |
| 15The Lord GOD of Hosts said: "Go to Shebna, that steward who is in charge of the palace, and say to him: | 15This is what the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies says: "Come, go to this steward, to Shebna who is in charge of the household, and ask him: |
| 16What are you doing here? Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here, carving your tomb on the height and cutting a crypt for yourself out of rock? | 16What are you doing here, and who are your relatives here that you could carve out a grave for yourself here—cutting out a tomb at the choicest location, chiseling out a resting place for yourself out of solid rock? |
| 17Look, you strong man! The LORD is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you, | 17Look Out! The LORD is about to hurl you away violently, my strong fellow! He will fold you up completely, |
| 18wind you up into a ball, and sling you into a wide land. There you will die, and there your glorious chariots will be--a disgrace to the house of your lord. | 18rolling you up tightly like a ball and throwing you into a large country. There you will die, and there your splendid chariots will lie. You're a disgrace to your master's house! |
| 19I will remove you from your office; you will be ousted from your position." | 19I will depose you from your office, ousting you from your position. |
| 20On that day I will call for my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. | 20"At that time, I'll call for my servant, Hilkiah's son Eliakim, |
| 21I will clothe him with your robe and tie your sash around him. I will put your authority into his hand, and he will be like a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the House of Judah. | 21and I'll clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him. I'll transfer your authority to him, and he'll be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. |
| 22I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; what he opens, no one can close; what he closes, no one can open. | 22"I'll place on his shoulder the key to the house of David—what he opens, no one will shut, and what he shuts, no one will open. |
| 23I will drive him, like a peg, into a firm place. He will be a throne of honor for his father's house. | 23I'll set him like a peg into a secure place; he will become a throne of honor to his father's house. |
| 24They will hang on him the whole burden of his father's house: the descendants and the offshoots--all the small vessels, from bowls to every kind of jar. | 24The entire reputation of his father's house will hang on him: its offspring and offshoots—all its smaller vessels, from the cups to all the jars. |
| 25On that day"--the declaration of the LORD of Hosts--"the peg that was driven into a firm place will give way, be cut off, and fall, and the load on it will be destroyed." Indeed, the LORD has spoken. | 25At that time," declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "the peg that was driven into a secure place will give way; it will be sheared and will fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut down." The LORD has spoken. |
