| 1And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, | 1Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, |
| 2Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. | 2where for forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry. |
| 3And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. | 3The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” |
| 4And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. | 4But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ ” |
| 5And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. | 5Then the devil led Him up to a high place and showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. |
| 6And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. | 6“I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish. |
| 7If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. | 7So if You worship me, it will all be Yours.” |
| 8And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. | 8But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’ ” |
| 9And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: | 9Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here. |
| 10For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: | 10For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully; |
| 11And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. | 11and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ ” |
| 12And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. | 12But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” |
| 13And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. | 13When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time. |
| 14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. | 14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region. |
| 15And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. | 15He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone. |
| 16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. | 16Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read, |
| 17And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, | 17the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written: |
| 18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, | 18“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, |
| 19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. | 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” |
| 20And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. | 20Then He rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him, |
| 21And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. | 21and He began by saying, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” |
| 22And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? | 22All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked. |
| 23And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. | 23Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.’ ” |
| 24And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. | 24Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. |
| 25But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; | 25But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and great famine swept over all the land. |
| 26But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. | 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to the widow of Zarephath in Sidon. |
| 27And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. | 27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. Yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.” |
| 28And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, | 28On hearing this, all the people in the synagogue were enraged. |
| 29And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. | 29They got up, drove Him out of the town, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the cliff. |
| 30But he passing through the midst of them went his way, | 30But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way. |
| 31And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. | 31Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He began to teach the people. |
| 32And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. | 32They were astonished at His teaching, because His message had authority. |
| 33And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, | 33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon. He cried out in a loud voice, |
| 34Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. | 34“Ha! What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” |
| 35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. | 35But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without harming him. |
| 36And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. | 36All the people were overcome with amazement and asked one another, “What is this message? With authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” |
| 37And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about. | 37And the news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding region. |
| 38And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. | 38After Jesus had left the synagogue, He went to the home of Simon, whose mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they appealed to Jesus on her behalf, |
| 39And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. | 39and He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and began to serve them. |
| 40Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. | 40At sunset, all who were ill with various diseases were brought to Jesus, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them. |
| 41And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. | 41Demons also came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But He rebuked the demons and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ. |
| 42And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. | 42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place, and the crowds were looking for Him. They came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving. |
| 43And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. | 43But Jesus told them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because that is why I was sent.” |
| 44And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee. | 44And He continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea. |
