King James BibleNew Living Translation
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,1Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,
Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.2where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.3Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.4But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’ ”
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.5Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.6“I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please.
If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.7I will give it all to you if you will worship me.”
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.8Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.’ ”
And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:9Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off!
For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:10For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you.
And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.11And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ”
And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.12Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’ ”
And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.13When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came. Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.14Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.
And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.15He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.16When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.
And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,17The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free,
To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.19 and that the time of the LORD ’s favor has come. ”
And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.20He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.
And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.21Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”
And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?22Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.23Then he said, “You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’—meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’
And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.24 But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;25 “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.
But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.27 And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.”
And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,28When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious.
And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.29Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff,
But he passing through the midst of them went his way,30but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way. Jesus Casts Out a Demon
And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.31Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught there in the synagogue every Sabbath day.
And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.32There, too, the people were amazed at his teaching, for he spoke with authority.
And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,33Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon—an evil spirit—cried out, shouting,
Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.34“Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.35But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.
And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.36Amazed, the people exclaimed, “What authority and power this man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!”
And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.37The news about Jesus spread through every village in the entire region. Jesus Heals Many People
And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.38After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon’s home, where he found Simon’s mother-in-law very sick with a high fever. “Please heal her,” everyone begged.
And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.39Standing at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them.
Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.40As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one.
And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.41Many were possessed by demons; and the demons came out at his command, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But because they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak. Jesus Continues to Preach
And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.42Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not to leave them.
And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.43But he replied, “I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent.”
And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.44So he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea.
