King James BibleNew Living Translation
And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.1Then the entire council took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor.
And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.2They began to state their case: “This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king.”
And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.3So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.4Pilate turned to the leading priests and to the crowd and said, “I find nothing wrong with this man!”
And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.5Then they became insistent. “But he is causing riots by his teaching wherever he goes—all over Judea, from Galilee to Jerusalem!”
When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.6“Oh, is he a Galilean?” Pilate asked.
And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.7When they said that he was, Pilate sent him to Herod Antipas, because Galilee was under Herod’s jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at the time.
And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.8Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.
Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.9He asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to answer.
And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.10Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law stood there shouting their accusations.
And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.11Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.12(Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies before, became friends that day.)
And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,13Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people,
Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:14and he announced his verdict. “You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.
No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.15Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty.
I will therefore chastise him, and release him.16So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.”
(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)17
And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:18Then a mighty roar rose from the crowd, and with one voice they shouted, “Kill him, and release Barabbas to us!”
(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)19(Barabbas was in prison for taking part in an insurrection in Jerusalem against the government, and for murder.)
Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.20Pilate argued with them, because he wanted to release Jesus.
But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.21But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.22For the third time he demanded, “Why? What crime has he committed? I have found no reason to sentence him to death. So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.”
And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.23But the mob shouted louder and louder, demanding that Jesus be crucified, and their voices prevailed.
And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.24So Pilate sentenced Jesus to die as they demanded.
And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.25As they had requested, he released Barabbas, the man in prison for insurrection and murder. But he turned Jesus over to them to do as they wished. The Crucifixion
And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.26As they led Jesus away, a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, happened to be coming in from the countryside. The soldiers seized him and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.27A large crowd trailed behind, including many grief-stricken women.
But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.28But Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.29 For the days are coming when they will say, ‘Fortunate indeed are the women who are childless, the wombs that have not borne a child and the breasts that have never nursed.’
Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.30 People will beg the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and plead with the hills, ‘Bury us.’
For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?31 For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry? ”
And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.32Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him.
And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.33When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.35The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,36The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine.
And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.37They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”
And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.38A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.”
And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.39One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!”
But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?40But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die?
And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.41We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”
And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”
And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.43And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” The Death of Jesus
And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.44By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.
And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.45The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle.
And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.46Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.
Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.47When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent. ”
And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.48And when all the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in deep sorrow.
And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.49But Jesus’ friends, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching. The Burial of Jesus
And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counseller; and he was a good man, and a just:50Now there was a good and righteous man named Joseph. He was a member of the Jewish high council,
(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.51but he had not agreed with the decision and actions of the other religious leaders. He was from the town of Arimathea in Judea, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.
This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.52He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.
And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.53Then he took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in a long sheet of linen cloth and laid it in a new tomb that had been carved out of rock.
And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.54This was done late on Friday afternoon, the day of preparation, as the Sabbath was about to begin.
And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.55As his body was taken away, the women from Galilee followed and saw the tomb where his body was placed.
And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.56Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law.
