NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
Now these are the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD your God instructed me to teach you so that you may carry them out in the land where you are headed1“Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the LORD your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it,
and that you may so revere the LORD your God that you will keep all his statutes and commandments that I am giving you--you, your children, and your grandchildren--all your lives, to prolong your days.2that you may fear the LORD your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.
Pay attention, Israel, and be careful to do this so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in number--as the LORD, God of your ancestors, said to you, you will have a land flowing with milk and honey. 3Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
Listen, Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!4“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
You must love the LORD your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength. 5You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind,6And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.7You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
You should tie them as a reminder on your forearm and fasten them as symbols on your forehead.8You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
Inscribe them on the doorframes of your houses and gates. 9You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Then when the LORD your God brings you to the land he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give you--a land with large, fine cities you did not build,10“And when the LORD your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build,
houses filled with choice things you did not accumulate, hewn out cisterns you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant--and you eat your fill,11and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full,
be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of Egypt, that place of slavery.12then take care lest you forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
You must revere the LORD your God, serve him, and take oaths using only his name.13It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.
You must not go after other gods, those of the surrounding peoples,14You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you—
for the LORD your God, who is present among you, is a jealous God and his anger will erupt against you and remove you from the land. 15for the LORD your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the LORD your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.
You must not put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah.16“You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.
Keep his commandments very carefully, as well as the stipulations and statutes he commanded you to observe.17You shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you.
Do whatever is proper and good before the LORD so that it may go well with you and that you may enter and occupy the good land that he promised your ancestors,18And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers
and that you may drive out all your enemies just as the LORD said. 19by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the LORD has promised.
When your children ask you later on, "What are the stipulations, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD our God commanded you?"20“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the LORD our God has commanded you?’
you must say to them, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt in a powerful way.21then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
And he brought signs and great, devastating wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on his whole family before our very eyes.22And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes.
He delivered us from there so that he could give us the land he had promised our ancestors.23And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers.
The LORD commanded us to obey all these statutes and to revere him so that it may always go well for us and he may preserve us, as he has to this day.24And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day.
We will be innocent if we carefully keep all these commandments before the LORD our God, just as he demands." 25And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us.’
