NET BibleNew International Version
Now these are the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD your God instructed me to teach you so that you may carry them out in the land where you are headed1These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,
and that you may so revere the LORD your God that you will keep all his statutes and commandments that I am giving you--you, your children, and your grandchildren--all your lives, to prolong your days.2so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.
Pay attention, Israel, and be careful to do this so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in number--as the LORD, God of your ancestors, said to you, you will have a land flowing with milk and honey. 3Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
Listen, Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
You must love the LORD your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength. 5Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind,6These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.7Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
You should tie them as a reminder on your forearm and fasten them as symbols on your forehead.8Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Inscribe them on the doorframes of your houses and gates. 9Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Then when the LORD your God brings you to the land he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give you--a land with large, fine cities you did not build,10When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you--a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,
houses filled with choice things you did not accumulate, hewn out cisterns you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant--and you eat your fill,11houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant--then when you eat and are satisfied,
be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of Egypt, that place of slavery.12be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
You must revere the LORD your God, serve him, and take oaths using only his name.13Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.
You must not go after other gods, those of the surrounding peoples,14Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you;
for the LORD your God, who is present among you, is a jealous God and his anger will erupt against you and remove you from the land. 15for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land.
You must not put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah.16Do not put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah.
Keep his commandments very carefully, as well as the stipulations and statutes he commanded you to observe.17Be sure to keep the commands of the LORD your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you.
Do whatever is proper and good before the LORD so that it may go well with you and that you may enter and occupy the good land that he promised your ancestors,18Do what is right and good in the LORD's sight, so that it may go well with you and you may go in and take over the good land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors,
and that you may drive out all your enemies just as the LORD said. 19thrusting out all your enemies before you, as the LORD said.
When your children ask you later on, "What are the stipulations, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD our God commanded you?"20In the future, when your son asks you, "What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the LORD our God has commanded you?"
you must say to them, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt in a powerful way.21tell him: "We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
And he brought signs and great, devastating wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on his whole family before our very eyes.22Before our eyes the LORD sent signs and wonders--great and terrible--on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household.
He delivered us from there so that he could give us the land he had promised our ancestors.23But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors.
The LORD commanded us to obey all these statutes and to revere him so that it may always go well for us and he may preserve us, as he has to this day.24The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.
We will be innocent if we carefully keep all these commandments before the LORD our God, just as he demands." 25And if we are careful to obey all this law before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness."
