Now these are the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD your God instructed me to teach you so that you may carry them out in the land where you are headed1"Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it,
and that you may so revere the LORD your God that you will keep all his statutes and commandments that I am giving you--you, your children, and your grandchildren--all your lives, to prolong your days.2so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.
Pay attention, Israel, and be careful to do this so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in number--as the LORD, God of your ancestors, said to you, you will have a land flowing with milk and honey. 3"O Israel, you should listen and be careful to do it, that it may be well with you and that you may multiply greatly, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
Listen, Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!4"Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!
You must love the LORD your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength. 5"You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind,6"These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.
and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.7You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
You should tie them as a reminder on your forearm and fasten them as symbols on your forehead.8"You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.
Inscribe them on the doorframes of your houses and gates. 9"You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Then when the LORD your God brings you to the land he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give you--a land with large, fine cities you did not build,10"Then it shall come about when the LORD your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you, great and splendid cities which you did not build,
houses filled with choice things you did not accumulate, hewn out cisterns you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant--and you eat your fill,11and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and hewn cisterns which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and you eat and are satisfied,
be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of Egypt, that place of slavery.12then watch yourself, that you do not forget the LORD who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
You must revere the LORD your God, serve him, and take oaths using only his name.13"You shall fear only the LORD your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name.
You must not go after other gods, those of the surrounding peoples,14"You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you,
for the LORD your God, who is present among you, is a jealous God and his anger will erupt against you and remove you from the land. 15for the LORD your God in the midst of you is a jealous God; otherwise the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth.
You must not put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah.16"You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah.
Keep his commandments very carefully, as well as the stipulations and statutes he commanded you to observe.17"You should diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and His testimonies and His statutes which He has commanded you.
Do whatever is proper and good before the LORD so that it may go well with you and that you may enter and occupy the good land that he promised your ancestors,18"You shall do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, that it may be well with you and that you may go in and possess the good land which the LORD swore to give your fathers,
and that you may drive out all your enemies just as the LORD said. 19by driving out all your enemies from before you, as the LORD has spoken.
When your children ask you later on, "What are the stipulations, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD our God commanded you?"20"When your son asks you in time to come, saying, 'What do the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments mean which the LORD our God commanded you?'
you must say to them, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt in a powerful way.21then you shall say to your son, 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the LORD brought us from Egypt with a mighty hand.
And he brought signs and great, devastating wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on his whole family before our very eyes.22'Moreover, the LORD showed great and distressing signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh and all his household;
He delivered us from there so that he could give us the land he had promised our ancestors.23He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to our fathers.'
The LORD commanded us to obey all these statutes and to revere him so that it may always go well for us and he may preserve us, as he has to this day.24"So the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today.
We will be innocent if we carefully keep all these commandments before the LORD our God, just as he demands." 25"It will be righteousness for us if we are careful to observe all this commandment before the LORD our God, just as He commanded us.
