NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
Here is a message about the Valley of Vision: What is the reason that all of you go up to the rooftops? 1The oracle concerning the valley of vision. What do you mean that you have gone up, all of you, to the housetops,
The noisy city is full of raucous sounds; the town is filled with revelry. Your slain were not cut down by the sword; they did not die in battle. 2you who are full of shoutings, tumultuous city, exultant town? Your slain are not slain with the sword or dead in battle.
All your leaders ran away together--they fled to a distant place; all your refugees were captured together--they were captured without a single arrow being shot. 3All your leaders have fled together; without the bow they were captured. All of you who were found were captured, though they had fled far away.
So I say: "Don't look at me! I am weeping bitterly. Don't try to console me concerning the destruction of my defenseless people." 4Therefore I said: “Look away from me; let me weep bitter tears; do not labor to comfort me concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people.”
For the sovereign master, the LORD who commands armies, has planned a day of panic, defeat, and confusion. In the Valley of Vision people shout and cry out to the hill. 5For the Lord GOD of hosts has a day of tumult and trampling and confusion in the valley of vision, a battering down of walls and a shouting to the mountains.
The Elamites picked up the quiver, and came with chariots and horsemen; the men of Kir prepared the shield. 6And Elam bore the quiver with chariots and horsemen, and Kir uncovered the shield.
Your very best valleys were full of chariots; horsemen confidently took their positions at the gate. 7Your choicest valleys were full of chariots, and the horsemen took their stand at the gates.
They removed the defenses of Judah. At that time you looked for the weapons in the House of the Forest. 8He has taken away the covering of Judah. In that day you looked to the weapons of the House of the Forest,
You saw the many breaks in the walls of the city of David; you stored up water in the lower pool. 9and you saw that the breaches of the city of David were many. You collected the waters of the lower pool,
You counted the houses in Jerusalem, and demolished houses so you could have material to reinforce the wall. 10and you counted the houses of Jerusalem, and you broke down the houses to fortify the wall.
You made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool--but you did not trust in the one who made it; you did not depend on the one who formed it long ago! 11You made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you did not look to him who did it, or see him who planned it long ago.
At that time the sovereign master, the LORD who commands armies, called for weeping and mourning, for shaved heads and sackcloth. 12In that day the Lord GOD of hosts called for weeping and mourning, for baldness and wearing sackcloth;
But look, there is outright celebration! You say, "Kill the ox and slaughter the sheep, eat meat and drink wine. Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!" 13and behold, joy and gladness, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
The LORD who commands armies told me this: "Certainly this sin will not be forgiven as long as you live," says the sovereign master, the LORD who commands armies. 14The LORD of hosts has revealed himself in my ears: “Surely this iniquity will not be atoned for you until you die,” says the Lord GOD of hosts.
This is what the sovereign master, the LORD who commands armies, says: "Go visit this administrator, Shebna, who supervises the palace, and tell him: 15Thus says the Lord GOD of hosts, “Come, go to this steward, to Shebna, who is over the household, and say to him:
What right do you have to be here? What relatives do you have buried here? Why do you chisel out a tomb for yourself here? He chisels out his burial site in an elevated place, he carves out his tomb on a cliff. 16What have you to do here, and whom have you here, that you have cut out here a tomb for yourself, you who cut out a tomb on the height and carve a dwelling for yourself in the rock?
Look, the LORD will throw you far away, you mere man! He will wrap you up tightly. 17Behold, the LORD will hurl you away violently, O you strong man. He will seize firm hold on you
He will wind you up tightly into a ball and throw you into a wide, open land. There you will die, and there with you will be your impressive chariots, which bring disgrace to the house of your master. 18and whirl you around and around, and throw you like a ball into a wide land. There you shall die, and there shall be your glorious chariots, you shame of your master’s house.
I will remove you from your office; you will be thrown down from your position. 19I will thrust you from your office, and you will be pulled down from your station.
"At that time I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah.20In that day I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah,
I will put your robe on him, tie your belt around him, and transfer your authority to him. He will become a protector of the residents of Jerusalem and of the people of Judah.21and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your sash on him, and will commit your authority to his hand. And he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
I will place the key to the house of David on his shoulder. When he opens the door, no one can close it; when he closes the door, no one can open it.22And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
I will fasten him like a peg into a solid place; he will bring honor and respect to his father's family.23And I will fasten him like a peg in a secure place, and he will become a throne of honor to his father’s house.
His father's family will gain increasing prominence because of him, including the offspring and the offshoots. All the small containers, including the bowls and all the jars will hang from this peg.' 24And they will hang on him the whole honor of his father’s house, the offspring and issue, every small vessel, from the cups to all the flagons.
"At that time," says the LORD who commands armies, "the peg fastened into a solid place will come loose. It will be cut off and fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut off." Indeed, the LORD has spoken. 25In that day, declares the LORD of hosts, the peg that was fastened in a secure place will give way, and it will be cut down and fall, and the load that was on it will be cut off, for the LORD has spoken.”
