1Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: "Pay attention to all the commandments I am giving you today.1Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, "Keep every command I am giving you today.
2When you cross the Jordan River to the land the LORD your God is giving you, you must erect great stones and cover them with plaster.2At the time you cross the Jordan into the land the LORD your God is giving you, you must set up large stones and cover them with plaster.
3Then you must inscribe on them all the words of this law when you cross over, so that you may enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, said to you.3Write all the words of this law on the stones after you cross to enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
4So when you cross the Jordan you must erect on Mount Ebal these stones about which I am commanding you today, and you must cover them with plaster.4When you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today, and you are to cover them with plaster.
5Then you must build an altar there to the LORD your God, an altar of stones--do not use an iron tool on them.5Build an altar of stones there to the LORD your God--you must not use any iron tool on them.
6You must build the altar of the LORD your God with whole stones and offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God.6Use uncut stones to build the altar of the LORD your God and offer burnt offerings to the LORD your God on it.
7Also you must offer fellowship offerings and eat them there, rejoicing before the LORD your God.7There you are to sacrifice fellowship offerings, eat, and rejoice in the presence of the LORD your God.
8You must inscribe on the stones all the words of this law, making them clear." 8Write clearly all the words of this law on the plastered stones."
9Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel: "Be quiet and pay attention, Israel. Today you have become the people of the LORD your God.9Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, "Be silent, Israel, and listen! This day you have become the people of the LORD your God.
10You must obey him and keep his commandments and statutes that I am giving you today."10Obey the LORD your God and follow His commands and statutes I am giving you today."
11Moreover, Moses commanded the people that day:11On that day Moses commanded the people, "
12"The following tribes must stand to bless the people on Mount Gerizim when you cross the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.12When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes will stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
13And these other tribes must stand for the curse on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 13And these tribes will stand on Mount Ebal to deliver the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
14"The Levites will call out to every Israelite with a loud voice:14The Levites will proclaim in a loud voice to every Israelite:
15Cursed is the one who makes a carved or metal image--something abhorrent to the LORD, the work of the craftsman--and sets it up in a secret place.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'15The person who makes a carved idol or cast image, which is detestable to the LORD, the work of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret is cursed.' And all the people will reply, 'Amen!'
16Cursed is the one who disrespects his father and mother.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'16The one who dishonors his father or mother is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
17Cursed is the one who moves his neighbor's boundary marker.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'17The one who moves his neighbor's boundary marker is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
18Cursed is the one who misleads a blind person on the road.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'18The one who leads a blind person astray on the road is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
19Cursed is the one who perverts justice for the resident foreigner, the orphan, and the widow.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'19The one who denies justice to a foreigner, a fatherless child, or a widow is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
20Cursed is the one who has sexual relations with his father's former wife, for he dishonors his father.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'20The one who sleeps with his father's wife is cursed, for he has violated his father's marriage bed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
21Cursed is the one who commits bestiality.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'21The one who has sexual intercourse with any animal is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
22Cursed is the one who has sexual relations with his sister, the daughter of either his father or mother.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'22The one who sleeps with his sister, whether his father's daughter or his mother's daughter is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
23Cursed is the one who has sexual relations with his mother-in-law.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'23The one who sleeps with his mother-in-law is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
24Cursed is the one who kills his neighbor in private.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'24The one who secretly kills his neighbor is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
25Cursed is the one who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!'25The one who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
26Cursed is the one who refuses to keep the words of this law.' Then all the people will say, 'Amen!' 26Anyone who does not put the words of this law into practice is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'"
