Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles too had accepted the word of God.1Ἤκουσαν δὲ οἱ ἀπόστολοι καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ οἱ ὄντες κατὰ τὴν Ἰουδαίαν ὅτι καὶ τὰ ἔθνη ἐδέξαντο τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ
So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers took issue with him,2Ὅτε δὲ ἀνέβη Πέτρος εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ διεκρίνοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἐκ περιτομῆς
saying, "You went to uncircumcised men and shared a meal with them."3λέγοντες ὅτι Εἰσῆλθες πρὸς ἄνδρας ἀκροβυστίαν ἔχοντας καὶ συνέφαγες αὐτοῖς
But Peter began and explained it to them point by point, saying,4Ἀρξάμενος δὲ Πέτρος ἐξετίθετο αὐτοῖς καθεξῆς λέγων
"I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, an object something like a large sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came to me.5Ἐγὼ ἤμην ἐν πόλει Ἰόππῃ προσευχόμενος καὶ εἶδον ἐν ἐκστάσει ὅραμα καταβαῖνον σκεῦός τι ὡς ὀθόνην μεγάλην τέσσαρσιν ἀρχαῖς καθιεμένην ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἦλθεν ἄχρι ἐμοῦ
As I stared I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, reptiles, and wild birds.6εἰς ἣν ἀτενίσας κατενόουν καὶ εἶδον τὰ τετράποδα τῆς γῆς καὶ τὰ θηρία καὶ τὰ ἑρπετὰ καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ
I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; slaughter and eat!'7ἤκουσα δὲ καὶ φωνῆς λεγούσης μοι Ἀναστάς Πέτρε θῦσον καὶ φάγε
But I said, 'Certainly not, Lord, for nothing defiled or ritually unclean has ever entered my mouth!'8Εἶπον δέ Μηδαμῶς Κύριε ὅτι κοινὸν ἀκάθαρτον οὐδέποτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ στόμα μου
But the voice replied a second time from heaven, 'What God has made clean, you must not consider ritually unclean!'9Ἀπεκρίθη δὲ «ἐκ δευτέρου» φωνὴ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ Θεὸς ἐκαθάρισεν σὺ μὴ κοίνου
This happened three times, and then everything was pulled up to heaven again.10Τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τρίς καὶ ἀνεσπάσθη πάλιν ἅπαντα εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν
At that very moment, three men sent to me from Caesarea approached the house where we were staying.11Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐξαυτῆς τρεῖς ἄνδρες ἐπέστησαν ἐπὶ τὴν οἰκίαν ἐν ἦμεν ἀπεσταλμένοι ἀπὸ Καισαρείας πρός με
The Spirit told me to accompany them without hesitation. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man's house.12εἶπεν δὲ τὸ Πνεῦμά μοι συνελθεῖν αὐτοῖς μηδὲν διακρίναντα ἦλθον δὲ σὺν ἐμοὶ καὶ οἱ ἓξ ἀδελφοὶ οὗτοι καὶ εἰσήλθομεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ ἀνδρός
He informed us how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying, 'Send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter,13ἀπήγγειλεν δὲ ἡμῖν πῶς εἶδεν τὸν ἄγγελον ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ σταθέντα καὶ εἰπόντα Ἀπόστειλον εἰς Ἰόππην καὶ μετάπεμψαι Σίμωνα τὸν ἐπικαλούμενον Πέτρον
who will speak a message to you by which you and your entire household will be saved.'14ὃς λαλήσει ῥήματα πρὸς σὲ ἐν οἷς σωθήσῃ σὺ καὶ πᾶς οἶκός σου
Then as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he did on us at the beginning.15Ἐν δὲ τῷ ἄρξασθαί με λαλεῖν ἐπέπεσεν τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ὥσπερ καὶ ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς ἐν ἀρχῇ
And I remembered the word of the Lord, as he used to say, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'16ἐμνήσθην δὲ τοῦ ῥήματος τοῦ Κυρίου ὡς ἔλεγεν Ἰωάννης μὲν ἐβάπτισεν ὕδατι ὑμεῖς δὲ βαπτισθήσεσθε ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ
Therefore if God gave them the same gift as he also gave us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to hinder God?"17εἰ οὖν τὴν ἴσην δωρεὰν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς Θεὸς ὡς καὶ ἡμῖν πιστεύσασιν ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν ἐγὼ τίς ἤμην δυνατὸς κωλῦσαι τὸν Θεόν
When they heard this, they ceased their objections and praised God, saying, "So then, God has granted the repentance that leads to life even to the Gentiles." 18Ἀκούσαντες δὲ ταῦτα ἡσύχασαν καὶ ἐδόξασαν τὸν Θεὸν λέγοντες Ἄρα καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν Θεὸς τὴν μετάνοιαν εἰς ζωὴν ἔδωκεν
Now those who had been scattered because of the persecution that took place over Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the message to no one but Jews.19Οἱ μὲν οὖν διασπαρέντες ἀπὸ τῆς θλίψεως τῆς γενομένης ἐπὶ Στεφάνῳ διῆλθον ἕως Φοινίκης καὶ Κύπρου καὶ Ἀντιοχείας μηδενὶ λαλοῦντες τὸν λόγον εἰ μὴ μόνον Ἰουδαίοις
But there were some men from Cyprus and Cyrene among them who came to Antioch and began to speak to the Greeks too, proclaiming the good news of the Lord Jesus.20Ἦσαν δέ τινες ἐξ αὐτῶν ἄνδρες Κύπριοι καὶ Κυρηναῖοι οἵτινες ἐλθόντες εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν ἐλάλουν καὶ πρὸς τοὺς Ἑλληνιστάς εὐαγγελιζόμενοι τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν
The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.21καὶ ἦν χεὶρ Κυρίου μετ’ αὐτῶν πολύς τε ἀριθμὸς πιστεύσας ἐπέστρεψεν ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον
A report about them came to the attention of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.22Ἠκούσθη δὲ λόγος εἰς τὰ ὦτα τῆς ἐκκλησίας τῆς οὔσης ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ περὶ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐξαπέστειλαν Βαρνάβαν [διελθεῖν] ἕως Ἀντιοχείας
When he came and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with devoted hearts,23ὃς παραγενόμενος καὶ ἰδὼν τὴν χάριν τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐχάρη καὶ παρεκάλει πάντας τῇ προθέσει τῆς καρδίας προσμένειν (ἐν) τῷ Κυρίῳ
because he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and a significant number of people were brought to the Lord.24ὅτι ἦν ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ πλήρης Πνεύματος Ἁγίου καὶ πίστεως καὶ προσετέθη ὄχλος ἱκανὸς τῷ Κυρίῳ
Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to look for Saul,25Ἐξῆλθεν δὲ εἰς Ταρσὸν ἀναζητῆσαι Σαῦλον
and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught a significant number of people. Now it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.
At that time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.27Ἐν ταύταις δὲ ταῖς ἡμέραις κατῆλθον ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων προφῆται εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν
One of them, named Agabus, got up and predicted by the Spirit that a severe famine was about to come over the whole inhabited world. (This took place during the reign of Claudius.)28ἀναστὰς δὲ εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν ὀνόματι Ἅγαβος ἐσήμανεν διὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος λιμὸν μεγάλην μέλλειν ἔσεσθαι ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν οἰκουμένην ἥτις ἐγένετο ἐπὶ Κλαυδίου
So the disciples, each in accordance with his financial ability, decided to send relief to the brothers living in Judea.29τῶν δὲ μαθητῶν καθὼς εὐπορεῖτό τις ὥρισαν ἕκαστος αὐτῶν εἰς διακονίαν πέμψαι τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ ἀδελφοῖς
They did so, sending their financial aid to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. 30 καὶ ἐποίησαν ἀποστείλαντες πρὸς τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους διὰ χειρὸς Βαρνάβα καὶ Σαύλου
