The whole earth had a common language and a common vocabulary.1There was a time when the entire earth spoke a common language with an identical vocabulary.
When the people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.2As people migrated westward, they came across a plain in the region of Shinar and settled there.
Then they said to one another, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." (They had brick instead of stone and tar instead of mortar.)3They told each other, "Come on! Let's burn bricks thoroughly." They used bricks for stone and tar for mortar.
Then they said, "Come, let's build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves. Otherwise we will be scattered across the face of the entire earth." 4Then they said, "Come on! Let's build ourselves a city and a tower, with its summit in the heavens, and let's make a name for ourselves so we won't be scattered over the surface of the whole earth."
But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the people had started building.5However, the LORD descended to look over the city and the tower that the humans were building.
And the LORD said, "If as one people all sharing a common language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be beyond them.6The LORD said, "Look! They are one people with the same language for all of them, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. Nothing that they have a mind to do will be impossible for them!
Come, let's go down and confuse their language so they won't be able to understand each other." 7Come on! Let's go down there and confuse their language, so that they won't understand each other's speech."
So the LORD scattered them from there across the face of the entire earth, and they stopped building the city.8So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the surface of the whole earth, so that they had to stop building the city.
That is why its name was called Babel--because there the LORD confused the language of the entire world, and from there the LORD scattered them across the face of the entire earth. 9Therefore it was called Babylon, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth, and from there the LORD scattered them over the surface of the entire earth.
