For the music director; a psalm of David. Listen to me, O God, as I offer my lament! Protect my life from the enemy's terrifying attacks. 1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
Hide me from the plots of evil men, from the crowd of evildoers. 2Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:
They sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge, 3Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:
in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. 4That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.
They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast, "Who will see them?" 5They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?
They devise unjust schemes; they disguise a well-conceived plot. Man's inner thoughts cannot be discovered. 6They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.
But God will shoot at them; suddenly they will be wounded by an arrow. 7But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.
Their slander will bring about their demise. All who see them will shudder, 8So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.
and all people will fear. They will proclaim what God has done, and reflect on his deeds. 9And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.
The godly will rejoice in the LORD and take shelter in him. All the morally upright will boast. 10The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.
