A song, a psalm written by the Korahites; for the music director; according to the machalath-leannoth style; a well-written song by Heman the Ezrachite. O LORD God who delivers me! By day I cry out and at night I pray before you. 1A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director; according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD, the God of my salvation, I have cried out by day and in the night before You.
Listen to my prayer! Pay attention to my cry for help! 2Let my prayer come before You; Incline Your ear to my cry!
For my life is filled with troubles and I am ready to enter Sheol. 3For my soul has had enough troubles, And my life has drawn near to Sheol.
They treat me like those who descend into the grave. I am like a helpless man, 4I am reckoned among those who go down to the pit; I have become like a man without strength,
adrift among the dead, like corpses lying in the grave, whom you remember no more, and who are cut off from your power. 5Forsaken among the dead, Like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You remember no more, And they are cut off from Your hand.
You place me in the lowest regions of the pit, in the dark places, in the watery depths. 6You have put me in the lowest pit, In dark places, in the depths.
Your anger bears down on me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. (Selah) 7Your wrath has rested upon me, And You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah.
You cause those who know me to keep their distance; you make me an appalling sight to them. I am trapped and cannot get free. 8You have removed my acquaintances far from me; You have made me an object of loathing to them; I am shut up and cannot go out.
My eyes grow weak because of oppression. I call out to you, O LORD, all day long; I spread out my hands in prayer to you. 9My eye has wasted away because of affliction; I have called upon You every day, O LORD; I have spread out my hands to You.
Do you accomplish amazing things for the dead? Do the departed spirits rise up and give you thanks? (Selah) 10Will You perform wonders for the dead? Will the departed spirits rise and praise You? Selah.
Is your loyal love proclaimed in the grave, or your faithfulness in the place of the dead? 11Will Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Are your amazing deeds experienced in the dark region, or your deliverance in the land of oblivion? 12Will Your wonders be made known in the darkness? And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
As for me, I cry out to you, O LORD; in the morning my prayer confronts you. 13But I, O LORD, have cried out to You for help, And in the morning my prayer comes before You.
O LORD, why do you reject me, and pay no attention to me? 14O LORD, why do You reject my soul? Why do You hide Your face from me?
I am oppressed and have been on the verge of death since my youth. I have been subjected to your horrors and am numb with pain. 15I was afflicted and about to die from my youth on; I suffer Your terrors; I am overcome.
Your anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me. 16Your burning anger has passed over me; Your terrors have destroyed me.
They surround me like water all day long; they join forces and encircle me. 17They have surrounded me like water all day long; They have encompassed me altogether.
You cause my friends and neighbors to keep their distance; those who know me leave me alone in the darkness. 18You have removed lover and friend far from me; My acquaintances are in darkness.
