Psalm 88
NET Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
A song, a psalm written by the Korahites; for the music director; according to the machalath-leannoth style; a well-written song by Heman the Ezrachite. O LORD God who delivers me! By day I cry out and at night I pray before you. 1O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you.
Listen to my prayer! Pay attention to my cry for help! 2Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry!
For my life is filled with troubles and I am ready to enter Sheol. 3For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol.
They treat me like those who descend into the grave. I am like a helpless man, 4I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am a man who has no strength,
adrift among the dead, like corpses lying in the grave, whom you remember no more, and who are cut off from your power. 5like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand.
You place me in the lowest regions of the pit, in the dark places, in the watery depths. 6You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep.
Your anger bears down on me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. (Selah) 7Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah
You cause those who know me to keep their distance; you make me an appalling sight to them. I am trapped and cannot get free. 8You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
My eyes grow weak because of oppression. I call out to you, O LORD, all day long; I spread out my hands in prayer to you. 9my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call upon you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you.
Do you accomplish amazing things for the dead? Do the departed spirits rise up and give you thanks? (Selah) 10Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
Is your loyal love proclaimed in the grave, or your faithfulness in the place of the dead? 11Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Are your amazing deeds experienced in the dark region, or your deliverance in the land of oblivion? 12Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
As for me, I cry out to you, O LORD; in the morning my prayer confronts you. 13But I, O LORD, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you.
O LORD, why do you reject me, and pay no attention to me? 14O LORD, why do you cast my soul away? Why do you hide your face from me?
I am oppressed and have been on the verge of death since my youth. I have been subjected to your horrors and am numb with pain. 15Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.
Your anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me. 16Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me.
They surround me like water all day long; they join forces and encircle me. 17They surround me like a flood all day long; they close in on me together.
You cause my friends and neighbors to keep their distance; those who know me leave me alone in the darkness. 18You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me; my companions have become darkness.
