With regard to spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.1Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
You know that when you were pagans you were often led astray by speechless idols, however you were led.2You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
So I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. 3Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit.4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
And there are different ministries, but the same Lord.5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
And there are different results, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.6There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the benefit of all.7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
For one person is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, and another the message of knowledge according to the same Spirit,8To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
It is one and the same Spirit, distributing as he decides to each person, who produces all these things. 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
For just as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body--though many--are one body, so too is Christ.12Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks or slaves or free, we were all made to drink of the one Spirit.13For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body--whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
For in fact the body is not a single member, but many.14Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
If the foot says, "Since I am not a hand, I am not part of the body," it does not lose its membership in the body because of that.15Now if the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.
And if the ear says, "Since I am not an eye, I am not part of the body," it does not lose its membership in the body because of that.16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.
If the whole body were an eye, what part would do the hearing? If the whole were an ear, what part would exercise the sense of smell?17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
But as a matter of fact, God has placed each of the members in the body just as he decided.18But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.
If they were all the same member, where would the body be?19If they were all one part, where would the body be?
So now there are many members, but one body.20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need you," nor in turn can the head say to the foot, "I do not need you."21The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!"
On the contrary, those members that seem to be weaker are essential,22On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
and those members we consider less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our unpresentable members are clothed with dignity,23and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,
but our presentable members do not need this. Instead, God has blended together the body, giving greater honor to the lesser member,24while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
so that there may be no division in the body, but the members may have mutual concern for one another.25so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.
If one member suffers, everyone suffers with it. If a member is honored, all rejoice with it. 26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
Now you are Christ's body, and each of you is a member of it.27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helps, gifts of leadership, different kinds of tongues.28And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.
Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they?29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they?30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
But you should be eager for the greater gifts. And now I will show you a way that is beyond comparison. 31Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.
