For the music director; By David, a psalm. I relied completely on the LORD, and he turned toward me and heard my cry for help. 1For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the watery pit, out of the slimy mud. He placed my feet on a rock and gave me secure footing. 2He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
He gave me reason to sing a new song, praising our God. May many see what God has done, so that they might swear allegiance to him and trust in the LORD! 3He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.
How blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD and does not seek help from the proud or from liars! 4Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.
O LORD, my God, you have accomplished many things; you have done amazing things and carried out your purposes for us. No one can thwart you! I want to declare them and talk about them, but they are too numerous to recount! 5Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.
Receiving sacrifices and offerings are not your primary concern. You make that quite clear to me! You do not ask for burnt sacrifices and sin offerings. 6Sacrifice and offering you did not desire-- but my ears you have opened -- burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
Then I say, "Look! I come! What is written in the scroll pertains to me. 7Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll.
I want to do what pleases you, my God. Your law dominates my thoughts." 8I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart."
I have told the great assembly about your justice. Look! I spare no words! O LORD, you know this is true. 9I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, LORD, as you know.
I have not failed to tell about your justice; I spoke about your reliability and deliverance; I have not neglected to tell the great assembly about your loyal love and faithfulness. 10I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help. I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness from the great assembly.
O LORD, you do not withhold your compassion from me. May your loyal love and faithfulness continually protect me! 11Do not withhold your mercy from me, LORD; may your love and faithfulness always protect me.
For innumerable dangers surround me. My sins overtake me so I am unable to see; they outnumber the hairs of my head so my strength fails me. 12For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.
Please be willing, O LORD, to rescue me! O LORD, hurry and help me! 13Be pleased to save me, LORD; come quickly, LORD, to help me.
May those who are trying to snatch away my life be totally embarrassed and ashamed! May those who want to harm me be turned back and ashamed! 14May all who want to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.
May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be humiliated and disgraced! 15May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame.
May all those who seek you be happy and rejoice in you! May those who love to experience your deliverance say continually, "May the LORD be praised!" 16But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, "The LORD is great!"
I am oppressed and needy! May the Lord pay attention to me! You are my helper and my deliverer! O my God, do not delay! 17But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay.
