New International VersionInternational Standard Version
Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:1The LORD responded to Job from the whirlwind and said:
"Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge?2"Who is this who keeps darkening my counsel without knowing what he's talking about?
Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.3Stand up like a man! I'll ask you some questions, and you give me some answers!"
"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand.4"Where were you when I laid the foundation of my earth? Tell me, since you're so informed!
Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?5Who set its measurement? Am I to assume you know? Who stretched a boundary line over it?
On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone--6On what were its bases set? Who laid its corner stone
while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?7while the morning stars sang together and all the divine beings shouted joyfully?
"Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb,8"Who enclosed the sea with limits when it gushed out of the womb,
when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness,9when I made clouds to be its clothes and thick darkness its swaddling blanket,
when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place,10when I proscribed a boundary for it, set in place bars and doors for it;
when I said, 'This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt'?11and said, 'You may come only this far and no more. Your majestic waves will stop here.'?
"Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place,12"Have you ever commanded the morning at any time during your life? Do you know where the dawn lives,
that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it?13where it seizes the edge of the earth and shakes the wicked out of it?
The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment.14Like clay is molded by a signet ring, the earth's hills and valleys then stand out like the colors of a garment.
The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken.15Then from the wicked their light is withheld and their upraised arm is broken.
"Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?16"Have you been to the source of the sea and walked about in the recesses of the deepest ocean?
Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?17Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?
Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this.18Do you understand the breadth of the earth? Tell me, since you know it all!
"What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside?19"Where is the road to where the light lives? Or where does the darkness live?
Can you take them to their places? Do you know the paths to their dwellings?20Can you take it to its homeland, since you know the path to his house?
Surely you know, for you were already born! You have lived so many years!21You should know! After all, you had been born back then, so the number of your days is great!
"Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail,22"Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen where the hail is stored,
which I reserve for times of trouble, for days of war and battle?23which I've reserved for the tribulation to come, for the day of battle and war?
What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed, or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?24Where is the lightning diffused or the east wind scattered around the earth?
Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm,25"Who cuts canals for storm floods, and paths for the lightning and thunder,
to water a land where no one lives, an uninhabited desert,26to bring rain upon a land without inhabitants, a desert in which no human beings live,
to satisfy a desolate wasteland and make it sprout with grass?27to satisfy a desolate and devastated desert, causing it to sprout vegetation?
Does the rain have a father? Who fathers the drops of dew?28"Does the rain have a father? Who fathered the dew?
From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens29Whose womb brings forth the ice? Who gives birth to frost out of an empty sky,
when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen?30when water solidifies like stone and the surface of the deepest sea freezes?
"Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? Can you loosen Orion's belt?31"Can you bind the chains of Pleiades or loosen the cords of Orion?
Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs?32Can you bring out constellations in their season? Can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God's dominion over the earth?33Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you regulate their authority over the earth?
"Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water?34"Can you call out to the clouds, so that abundant water drenches you?
Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, 'Here we are'?35Can you command the lightning, so that it goes forth and calls to you, 'Look at us!'
Who gives the ibis wisdom or gives the rooster understanding?36"Who sets wisdom within you, or imbues your mind with understanding?
Who has the wisdom to count the clouds? Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens37Who has the wisdom to be able to count the clouds, or to empty the water jars of heaven,
when the dust becomes hard and the clods of earth stick together?38when dust dries into a mass and then breaks apart into clods?
"Do you hunt the prey for the lioness and satisfy the hunger of the lions39"Can you hunt prey for the lioness to satisfy young lions
when they crouch in their dens or lie in wait in a thicket?40when they crouch in their dens and lie in ambush in their lairs?
Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?41Who prepares food for the raven, when its offspring cry out to God as they wander for lack of food?"
