Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.1Then Pilate had Jesus taken away and whipped.
The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe2The soldiers twisted some thorns into a victor's crown, put it on his head, and threw a purple robe on him.
and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they slapped him in the face.3They kept coming up to him and saying, "Long live the king of the Jews!" Then they began to slap him on the face.
Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him."4Pilate went outside again and told the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him."
When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!"5Then Jesus came outside, wearing the victor's crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate told them, "Here is the man!"
As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."6When the high priests and the officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate told them, "You take him and crucify him. I find no basis for a charge against him."
The Jewish leaders insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God."7The Jewish leaders answered Pilate, "We have a law, and according to that Law he must die because he made himself out to be the Son of God."
When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,8When Pilate heard this, he became even more afraid.
and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.9Returning to his headquarters, he asked Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus did not answer him.
"Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"10So Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to speak to me? You realize, don't you, that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you?"
Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."11Jesus answered him, "You have no authority over me at all, except what was given to you from above. That's why the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."
From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar."12From then on, Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, "If you release this fellow, you're not a friend of Caesar! Anyone who claims to be a king is defying Caesar!"
When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).13When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat in a place called The Pavement, which in Hebrew is called Gabbatha.
It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews.14Now it was the Preparation Day for the Passover, about noon. He told the Jewish leaders, "Here is your king!"
But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.15Then they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" Pilate asked them, "Should I crucify your king?" The high priests responded, "We have no king but Caesar!"
Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.16Then Pilate handed him over to be crucified, and they took Jesus away.
Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).17Carrying the cross all by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of a Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
There they crucified him, and with him two others--one on each side and Jesus in the middle.18There they crucified him, along with two others, one on each side of him with Jesus in the middle.
Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews.19Pilate wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, "Jesus from Nazareth, the King of the Jews."
Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.20Many Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews."21Then the Jewish high priests told Pilate, "Don't write, 'The King of the Jews,' but that this fellow said, 'I am the King of the Jews.'"
Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."22Pilate replied, "What I have written I have written."
When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier, and took his cloak as well. The cloak was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down.
"Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, "They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment." So this is what the soldiers did.24So they told each other, "Let's not tear it. Instead, let's throw dice to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture that says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they threw dice." So that is what the soldiers did.
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.25Meanwhile, standing near Jesus' cross were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, "Woman, here is your son,"26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he kept loving standing there, he told his mother, "Dear lady, here is your son."
and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.27Then he told the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty."28After this, when Jesus realized that everything was now completed, he said (in order to fulfill the Scripture), "I'm thirsty."
A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips.29A jar of sour wine was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth.
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.30After Jesus had taken the wine, he said, "It is finished." Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.
Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.31Since it was the Preparation Day, the Jewish leaders did not want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath, because that was a particularly important Sabbath. So they asked Pilate to have the men's legs broken and the bodies removed.
The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.32So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man and then of the other man who had been crucified with him.
But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water immediately came out.
The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.35The one who saw this has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows he is telling the truth so that you, too, may believe,
These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken,"36because these things happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: "None of his bones will be broken."
and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced."37In addition, another passage of Scripture says, "They will look on the one whom they pierced."
Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away.38Later on, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (though a secret one because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, and he came and removed his body.
He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.39Nicodemus, the man who had first come to Jesus at night, also arrived, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about 100 litra.
Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.40They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths along with spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.
At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.41A garden was located in the place where he was crucified, and in that garden was a new tomb in which no one had yet been placed.
Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.42Because it was the Jewish Preparation Day, and because the tomb was nearby, they put Jesus there.
