Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel:1Then Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel.
"I am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to lead you. The LORD has said to me, 'You shall not cross the Jordan.'2He said to them, "Today I am a hundred and twenty years old. I am no longer able to get about, and the LORD has said to me, 'You will not cross the Jordan.'
The LORD your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the LORD said.3As for the LORD your God, he is about to cross over before you; he will destroy these nations before you and dispossess them. As for Joshua, he is about to cross before you just as the LORD has said.
And the LORD will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land.4The LORD will do to them just what he did to Sihon and Og, the Amorite kings, and to their land, which he destroyed.
The LORD will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you.5The LORD will deliver them over to you and you will do to them according to the whole commandment I have given you.
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."6Be strong and courageous! Do not fear or tremble before them, for the LORD your God is the one who is going with you. He will not fail you or abandon you!"
Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the LORD swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance.7Then Moses called out to Joshua in the presence of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you will accompany these people to the land that the LORD promised to give their ancestors, and you will enable them to inherit it.
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."8The LORD is indeed going before you--he will be with you; he will not fail you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged!"
So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel.9Then Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carry the ark of the LORD's covenant, and to all Israel's elders.
Then Moses commanded them: "At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts, during the Festival of Tabernacles,10He commanded them: "At the end of seven years, at the appointed time of the cancellation of debts, at the Feast of Temporary Shelters,
when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place he will choose, you shall read this law before them in their hearing.11when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God in the place he chooses, you must read this law before them within their hearing.
Assemble the people--men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns--so they can listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and follow carefully all the words of this law.12Gather the people--men, women, and children, as well as the resident foreigners in your villages--so they may hear and thus learn about and fear the LORD your God and carefully obey all the words of this law.
Their children, who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess."13Then their children, who have not known this law, will also hear about and learn to fear the LORD your God for as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess."
The LORD said to Moses, "Now the day of your death is near. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him." So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.14Then the LORD said to Moses, "The day of your death is near. Summon Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting so that I can commission him." So Moses and Joshua presented themselves in the tent of meeting.
Then the LORD appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.15The LORD appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud that stood above the door of the tent.
And the LORD said to Moses: "You are going to rest with your ancestors, and these people will soon prostitute themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake me and break the covenant I made with them.16Then the LORD said to Moses, "You are about to die, and then these people will begin to prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land into which they are going. They will reject me and break my covenant that I have made with them.
And in that day I will become angry with them and forsake them; I will hide my face from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, 'Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?'17At that time my anger will erupt against them and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome them so that they will say at that time, 'Have not these disasters overcome us because our God is not among us?'
And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.18But I will certainly hide myself at that time because of all the wickedness they will have done by turning to other gods.
"Now write down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness for me against them.19Now write down for yourselves the following song and teach it to the Israelites. Put it into their very mouths so that this song may serve as my witness against the Israelites!
When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors, and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods and worship them, rejecting me and breaking my covenant.20For after I have brought them to the land I promised to their ancestors--one flowing with milk and honey--and they eat their fill and become fat, then they will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant.
And when many disasters and calamities come on them, this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do, even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath."21Then when many disasters and distresses overcome them this song will testify against them, for their descendants will not forget it. I know the intentions they have in mind today, even before I bring them to the land I have promised."
So Moses wrote down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites.22So on that day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites,
The LORD gave this command to Joshua son of Nun: "Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you."23and the LORD commissioned Joshua son of Nun, "Be strong and courageous, for you will take the Israelites to the land I have promised them, and I will be with you."
After Moses finished writing in a book the words of this law from beginning to end,24When Moses finished writing on a scroll the words of this law in their entirety,
he gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD:25he commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the LORD's covenant,
"Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.26"Take this scroll of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God. It will remain there as a witness against you,
For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you have been rebellious against the LORD while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die!27for I know about your rebellion and stubbornness. Indeed, even while I have been living among you to this very day, you have rebelled against the LORD; you will be even more rebellious after my death!
Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth to testify against them.28Gather to me all your tribal elders and officials so I can speak to them directly about these things and call the heavens and the earth to witness against them.
For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the LORD and arouse his anger by what your hands have made."29For I know that after I die you will totally corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in the days to come because you will act wickedly before the LORD, inciting him to anger because of your actions."
And Moses recited the words of this song from beginning to end in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:30Then Moses recited the words of this song from start to finish in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel.
