Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.1Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words.
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.2It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.3They said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly." And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.
And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”4They said, "Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth."
But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.5The LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.6The LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.
Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”7"Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another's speech."
So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.8So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.
Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth.
This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.10These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood;
After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.11and Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.
Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Salah.12Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah;
After he begot Salah, Arphaxad lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.13and Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.
Salah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.14Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber;
After he begot Eber, Salah lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.15and Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.
Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg.16Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg;
After he begot Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.17and Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.
Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.18Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu;
After he begot Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.19and Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.
Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug.20Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug;
After he begot Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.21and Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.
Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.22Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor;
After he begot Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.23and Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.
Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah.24Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah;
After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.25and Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.
Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.26Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot.27Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot.
And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.28Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.29Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.
But Sarai was barren; she had no child.30Sarai was barren; she had no child.
And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there.31Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there.
So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.32The days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.
