Deuteronomy 29
NKJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New King James VersionNew Living Translation
These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He made with them in Horeb.1 These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites while they were in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Mount Sinai. Moses Reviews the Covenant
Now Moses called all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land—2 Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them, “You have seen with your own eyes everything the LORD did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to his whole country—
the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders.3all the great tests of strength, the miraculous signs, and the amazing wonders.
Yet the LORD has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day.4But to this day the LORD has not given you minds that understand, nor eyes that see, nor ears that hear!
And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet.5For forty years I led you through the wilderness, yet your clothes and sandals did not wear out.
You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or similar drink, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.6You ate no bread and drank no wine or other alcoholic drink, but he provided for you so you would know that he is the LORD your God.
And when you came to this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we conquered them.7“When we came here, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them.
We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh.8We took their land and gave it to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and to the half-tribe of Manasseh as their grant of land.
Therefore keep the words of this covenant, and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.9“Therefore, obey the terms of this covenant so that you will prosper in everything you do.
“All of you stand today before the LORD your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel,10All of you—tribal leaders, elders, officers, all the men of Israel—are standing today in the presence of the LORD your God.
your little ones and your wives—also the stranger who is in your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water—11Your little ones and your wives are with you, as well as the foreigners living among you who chop your wood and carry your water.
that you may enter into covenant with the LORD your God, and into His oath, which the LORD your God makes with you today,12You are standing here today to enter into the covenant of the LORD your God. The LORD is making this covenant, including the curses.
that He may establish you today as a people for Himself, and that He may be God to you, just as He has spoken to you, and just as He has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.13By entering into the covenant today, he will establish you as his people and confirm that he is your God, just as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
“I make this covenant and this oath, not with you alone,14“But you are not the only ones with whom I am making this covenant with its curses.
but with him who stands here with us today before the LORD our God, as well as with him who is not here with us today15I am making this covenant both with you who stand here today in the presence of the LORD our God, and also with the future generations who are not standing here today.
(for you know that we dwelt in the land of Egypt and that we came through the nations which you passed by,16“You remember how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we traveled through the lands of enemy nations as we left.
and you saw their abominations and their idols which were among them—wood and stone and silver and gold);17You have seen their detestable practices and their idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold.
so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations, and that there may not be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood;18I am making this covenant with you so that no one among you—no man, woman, clan, or tribe—will turn away from the LORD our God to worship these gods of other nations, and so that no root among you bears bitter and poisonous fruit.
and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates of my heart’—as though the drunkard could be included with the sober.19“Those who hear the warnings of this curse should not congratulate themselves, thinking, ‘I am safe, even though I am following the desires of my own stubborn heart.’ This would lead to utter ruin!
“The LORD would not spare him; for then the anger of the LORD and His jealousy would burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book would settle on him, and the LORD would blot out his name from under heaven.20The LORD will never pardon such people. Instead his anger and jealousy will burn against them. All the curses written in this book will come down on them, and the LORD will erase their names from under heaven.
And the LORD would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the Law,21The LORD will separate them from all the tribes of Israel, to pour out on them all the curses of the covenant recorded in this Book of Instruction.
so that the coming generation of your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the LORD has laid on it:22“Then the generations to come, both your own descendants and the foreigners who come from distant lands, will see the devastation of the land and the diseases the LORD inflicts on it.
‘The whole land is brimstone, salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and His wrath.’23They will exclaim, ‘The whole land is devastated by sulfur and salt. It is a wasteland with nothing planted and nothing growing, not even a blade of grass. It is like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD destroyed in his intense anger.’
All nations would say, ‘Why has the LORD done so to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?’24“And all the surrounding nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why was he so angry?’
Then people would say: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt;25“And the answer will be, ‘This happened because the people of the land abandoned the covenant that the LORD, the God of their ancestors, made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
for they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that He had not given to them.26Instead, they turned away to serve and worship gods they had not known before, gods that were not from the LORD.
Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against this land, to bring on it every curse that is written in this book.27That is why the LORD’s anger has burned against this land, bringing down on it every curse recorded in this book.
And the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’28In great anger and fury the LORD uprooted his people from their land and banished them to another land, where they still live today!’
“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.29“The LORD our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.
