1The LORD said to Moses, “Get going, you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt. Go up to the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I told them, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’

1The LORD told Moses, "Go up from here, you and the people whom you brought out of Egypt, to the land about which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob saying, 'I'll give it to your descendants.'

2And I will send an angel before you to drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

2I'll send an angel in front of you and I'll drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

3Go up to this land that flows with milk and honey. But I will not travel among you, for you are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I did, I would surely destroy you along the way.”

3Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey, but I won't go up among you, because you are an obstinate people, and otherwise I might consume you along the way."

4When the people heard these stern words, they went into mourning and stopped wearing their jewelry and fine clothes.

4When the people heard this troubling word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments.

5For the LORD had told Moses to tell them, “You are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I were to travel with you for even a moment, I would destroy you. Remove your jewelry and fine clothes while I decide what to do with you.”

5The LORD had told Moses, "Say to the Israelis, 'You are an obstinate people, and if for one moment I went up among you, I would put an end to you. Now take off your ornaments so I may decide what to do with you.'"

6So from the time they left Mount Sinai, the Israelites wore no more jewelry or fine clothes.

6So the Israelis did not wear their ornaments from Mount Horeb onward.

7It was Moses’ practice to take the Tent of Meeting and set it up some distance from the camp. Everyone who wanted to make a request of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp.

7Moses used to take the tent and set it up outside the camp at a distance from the camp, and he called it the Tent of Meeting. When anyone sought the LORD, he would go out to the Tent of Meeting which was outside the camp.

8Whenever Moses went out to the Tent of Meeting, all the people would get up and stand in the entrances of their own tents. They would all watch Moses until he disappeared inside.

8When Moses would go out to the tent, all the people would get up, and each would stand in the doorway of his tent, watching Moses until he entered the tent.

9As he went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and hover at its entrance while the LORD spoke with Moses.

9When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stand at the doorway of the tent while God spoke with Moses.

10When the people saw the cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, they would stand and bow down in front of their own tents.

10When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the doorway of the tent, all of them would get up and prostrate themselves in worship, each one at the doorway of his tent.

11Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting. Moses Sees the LORD’s Glory

11The LORD would speak to Moses face to face just as a man speaks with his friend. When Moses returned to the camp, Nun's son Joshua, his young servant, would not leave the tent.

12One day Moses said to the LORD, “You have been telling me, ‘Take these people up to the Promised Land.’ But you haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You have told me, ‘I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.’

12Moses told the LORD, "Look, you have told me, 'Bring up this people,' but you haven't let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, 'I know you by name,' and also, 'You have found favor in my sight.'

13If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people.”

13Now, if I've found favor in your sight, please show me your ways so I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. And remember, this nation is your people."

14The LORD replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.”

14He said, "My presence will go with you, and I'll give you rest."

15Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place.

15Then Moses told the LORD, "If your presence does not go with us, don't bring us up from here.

16How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.”

16Otherwise, how shall it be known that your people and I have received favor from you, unless you go with us and that we, your people and I, are distinguished from all the people on the surface of the earth?"

17The LORD replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.”

17The LORD told Moses, "I'll do the very thing that you have said, because you have found favor in my sight and I know you by name."

18Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.”

18Then Moses said, "Please show me your glory."

19The LORD replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.

19God said, "I'll cause all my goodness to pass before you, and I'll proclaim the name 'the LORD' before you. I'll be gracious to whom I'll be gracious, and I'll show compassion on whom I'll show compassion.

20But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live.”

20But," he said, "You cannot see my face, because a man cannot see me and live."

21The LORD continued, “Look, stand near me on this rock.

21The LORD said, "Look, there is a place near me where you can stand on the rock;

22As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

22and as my glory passes by, I'll put you in a crevice in the rock, and cover you with my hand until I've passed by.

23Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.”

23Then I'll remove my hand so you may see my back, but my face must not be seen."
