Now the LORD said to Moses,1The LORD also told Moses,
“Make two trumpets of hammered silver for calling the community to assemble and for signaling the breaking of camp.2"Make two trumpets, crafting them from beaten silver, for use in calling the congregation together and for notifying the camps to set out for travel.
When both trumpets are blown, everyone must gather before you at the entrance of the Tabernacle.3Sound them when the whole assembly is to gather together at the entrance to the appointed place of meeting.
But if only one trumpet is blown, then only the leaders—the heads of the clans of Israel—must present themselves to you.4When one trumpet is blown, the elders and the heads of the thousands of the Israelis are to gather to you.
“When you sound the signal to move on, the tribes camped on the east side of the Tabernacle must break camp and move forward.5When you sound an alarm, the ones encamped on the east side are to begin to travel.
When you sound the signal a second time, the tribes camped on the south will follow. You must sound short blasts as the signal for moving on.6When you sound the alarm the second time, those encamped on the south are to begin to travel. Alarms are to be sounded for their travels.
But when you call the people to an assembly, blow the trumpets with a different signal.7But when you blow the trumpet to assemble the whole congregation, don't use the same sound as you do for sounding an alarm.
Only the priests, Aaron’s descendants, are allowed to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation.8The descendants of Aaron the priest are to blow the trumpets. Have them do this for you permanently throughout your generations to come."
“When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the LORD your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies.9"When you wage war in your land against an enemy who is hostile to you, you are to sound an alarm with the trumpets. Then you will be remembered before the face of the LORD your God and you will be delivered from your enemies.
Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind your God of his covenant with you. I am the LORD your God.” The Israelites Leave Sinai10At the beginning of the month, during your time of rejoicing at the appointed place, sound the trumpet over your burnt offering, then sacrifice your peace offering, since they are to be your memorial before the LORD your God. I am the LORD your God."
In the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt—on the twentieth day of the second month —the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle of the Covenant.11On the twentieth day of the second month in the second year, the cloud was lifted up from the Tent of Meeting,
So the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled on from place to place until the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran.12so the Israelis set out from the Sinai Wilderness until the cloud settled in the Paran Wilderness,
When the people set out for the first time, following the instructions the LORD had given through Moses,13doing what the LORD had said through Moses.
Judah’s troops led the way. They marched behind their banner, and their leader was Nahshon son of Amminadab.14The standard of the camp of Judah was the first to travel, accompanied by its army with Amminadab's son Nahshon in charge.
They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Issachar, led by Nethanel son of Zuar,15Zuar's son Nethanel was in charge of the camp of Issachar.
and the troops of the tribe of Zebulun, led by Eliab son of Helon.16Helon's son Eliab was in charge of the camp of Zebulun.
Then the Tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonite and Merarite divisions of the Levites were next in the line of march, carrying the Tabernacle with them.17The tent was taken down, and the descendants of Gershon and Merari carried the tent.
Reuben’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elizur son of Shedeur.18Then the standard of the camp of Reuben set out, accompanied by its army with Shedeur's son Elizur in charge.
They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Simeon, led by Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai,19Zurishaddai's son Shelumiel was in charge of the tribe of Simeon.
and the troops of the tribe of Gad, led by Eliasaph son of Deuel.20Deuel's son Eliasaph was in charge of the tribe of Gad.
Next came the Kohathite division of the Levites, carrying the sacred objects from the Tabernacle. Before they arrived at the next camp, the Tabernacle would already be set up at its new location.21Then the descendants of Kohath, carrying the sanctuary, set out, since the tent was to be set up before they arrive.
Ephraim’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elishama son of Ammihud.22After this, the standard of the camp of Ephraim set out, accompanied by its army with Ammihud's son Elishama in charge.
They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Manasseh, led by Gamaliel son of Pedahzur,23Pedazzur's son Gamaliel was in charge of the tribe of Manasseh.
and the troops of the tribe of Benjamin, led by Abidan son of Gideoni.24Gideoni's son Abidan was in charge of the army of the tribe of Benjamin.
Dan’s troops went last, marching behind their banner and serving as the rear guard for all the tribal camps. Their leader was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.25Then the standard of the camp of Dan set out, functioning as the rear guard for all the encampments, accompanied by its army with Ammishaddai's son Ahiezer.
They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Asher, led by Pagiel son of Ocran,26Ochran's son Pagiel was in charge of the tribe of Asher.
and the troops of the tribe of Naphtali, led by Ahira son of Enan.27Enan's son Ahira was in charge of the tribe of Naphtali.
This was the order in which the Israelites marched, division by division.28This was the travel order for the Israelis, whenever their companies traveled.
One day Moses said to his brother-in-law, Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, “We are on our way to the place the LORD promised us, for he said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised wonderful blessings for Israel!”29Then Moses told Reuel's son Hobab, Moses' relative by marriage from Midian, "We are traveling to the place about which the LORD said 'I will give it to you.' So come with us and we'll be good to you, because the LORD has spoken good things about Israel."
But Hobab replied, “No, I will not go. I must return to my own land and family.”30But he said, "I won't go with you because I'm returning to my land and to my own family."
“Please don’t leave us,” Moses pleaded. “You know the places in the wilderness where we should camp. Come, be our guide.31Then Moses responded, "Please don't leave us now, since you know where we can camp in the wilderness. You could be our guide.
If you do, we’ll share with you all the blessings the LORD gives us.”32And when you come with us, the good things that the LORD will grant us, we'll give you as well."
They marched for three days after leaving the mountain of the LORD, with the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant moving ahead of them to show them where to stop and rest.33So they traveled from the mountain of the LORD, a three-day trip, with the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD traveling in front of them—a three day trip to explore a place for them to rest.
As they moved on each day, the cloud of the LORD hovered over them.34Moreover, the cloud of the LORD protected them during the day when they left their camp.
And whenever the Ark set out, Moses would shout, “Arise, O LORD, and let your enemies be scattered! Let them flee before you!”35Whenever the ark was ready to travel, Moses would say: "Arise, LORD, to scatter your enemies, so that whoever hates you will flee from your presence."
And when the Ark was set down, he would say, “Return, O LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel!”36Whenever the ark was being readied to rest, he would say: "Return, LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel."
