1 In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, subsequent to the one that had appeared to me earlier. In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first. In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, <i>even unto</i> me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar the king, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, subsequent to the one which appeared to me previously. In the third year of King Belshazzar’s reign, I, Daniel, had a vision, after the one that had already appeared to me.
2 And in the vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa, in the province of Elam. I saw in the vision that I was beside the Ulai Canal. And I saw in the vision; and when I saw, I was in Susa the citadel, which is in the province of Elam. And I saw in the vision, and I was at the Ulai canal. And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I <i>was</i> at Shushan <i>in</i> the palace, which <i>is</i> in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai. I looked in the vision, and while I was looking, I was in the citadel of Susa, which is in the province of Elam; and I looked in the vision, and I myself was beside the Ulai Canal. In my vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa in the province of Elam; in the vision I was beside the Ulai Canal.
3 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a ram with two horns standing beside the canal. The horns were long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one grew up later. I raised my eyes and saw, and behold, a ram standing on the bank of the canal. It had two horns, and both horns were high, but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last. Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had <i>two</i> horns: and the <i>two</i> horns <i>were</i> high; but one <i>was</i> higher than the other, and the higher came up last. Then I raised my eyes and looked, and behold, a ram which had two horns was standing in front of the canal. Now the two horns <i>were</i> long, but one <i>was</i> longer than the other, with the longer one coming up last. I looked up, and there before me was a ram with two horns, standing beside the canal, and the horns were long. One of the horns was longer than the other but grew up later.
4 I saw the ram charging toward the west and the north and the south. No animal could stand against him, and there was no deliverance from his power. He did as he pleased and became great. I saw the ram charging westward and northward and southward. No beast could stand before him, and there was no one who could rescue from his power. He did as he pleased and became great. I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither <i>was there any</i> that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great. I saw the ram butting westward, northward, and southward, and no <i>other</i> beasts could stand against him nor was there anyone to rescue from his power, but he did as he pleased and made himself great. I watched the ram as it charged toward the west and the north and the south. No animal could stand against it, and none could rescue from its power. It did as it pleased and became great.
5 As I was contemplating all this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between his eyes came out of the west, crossing the surface of the entire earth without touching the ground. As I was considering, behold, a male goat came from the west across the face of the whole earth, without touching the ground. And the goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes. And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat <i>had</i> a notable horn between his eyes. While I was observing, behold, a male goat was coming from the west over the surface of the entire earth without touching the ground; and the goat <i>had</i> a prominent horn between his eyes. As I was thinking about this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between its eyes came from the west, crossing the whole earth without touching the ground.
6 He came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and rushed at him with furious power. He came to the ram with the two horns, which I had seen standing on the bank of the canal, and he ran at him in his powerful wrath. And he came to the ram that had <i>two</i> horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power. He came up to the ram that had the two horns, which I had seen standing in front of the canal, and rushed at him in his mighty wrath. It came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and charged at it in great rage.
7 I saw him approach the ram in a rage against him, and he struck the ram and shattered his two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against him, and the goat threw him to the ground and trampled him, and no one could deliver the ram from his power. I saw him come close to the ram, and he was enraged against him and struck the ram and broke his two horns. And the ram had no power to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground and trampled on him. And there was no one who could rescue the ram from his power. And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand. And I saw him come up beside the ram, and he was enraged at him; and he struck the ram and smashed his two horns, and the ram had no strength to withstand him. So he hurled him to the ground and trampled on him, and there was no one to rescue the ram from his power. I saw it attack the ram furiously, striking the ram and shattering its two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against it; the goat knocked it to the ground and trampled on it, and none could rescue the ram from its power.
8 Thus the goat became very great, but at the height of his power, his large horn was broken off, and four prominent horns came up in its place, pointing toward the four winds of heaven. Then the goat became exceedingly great, but when he was strong, the great horn was broken, and instead of it there came up four conspicuous horns toward the four winds of heaven. Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven. Then the male goat made himself exceedingly great. But once he became powerful, the large horn was broken; and in its place four prominent <i>horns</i> came up toward the four winds of heaven. The goat became very great, but at the height of its power the large horn was broken off, and in its place four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven.
9 From one of these horns a little horn emerged and grew extensively toward the south and the east and toward the Beautiful Land. Out of one of them came a little horn, which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the glorious land. And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant <i>land</i>. And out of one of them came a rather small horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Beautiful <i>Land.</i> Out of one of them came another horn, which started small but grew in power to the south and to the east and toward the Beautiful Land.
10 It grew as high as the host of heaven, and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the earth, and trampled them. It grew great, even to the host of heaven. And some of the host and some of the stars it threw down to the ground and trampled on them. And it waxed great, <i>even</i> to the host of heaven; and it cast down <i>some</i> of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. It grew up to the heavenly lights, and some of the lights, that is, some of the stars it threw down to the earth, and it trampled them. It grew until it reached the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth and trampled on them.
11 It magnified itself, even to the Prince of the host; it removed His daily sacrifice and overthrew the place of His sanctuary. It became great, even as great as the Prince of the host. And the regular burnt offering was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was overthrown. Yea, he magnified <i>himself</i> even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily <i>sacrifice</i> was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. It even exalted itself to be equal with the Commander of the army; and it removed the regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was overthrown. It set itself up to be as great as the commander of the army of the LORD; it took away the daily sacrifice from the LORD, and his sanctuary was thrown down.
12 And in the rebellion, the host and the daily sacrifice were given over to the horn, and it flung truth to the ground and prospered in whatever it did. And a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering because of transgression, and it will throw truth to the ground, and it will act and prosper. And an host was given <i>him</i> against the daily <i>sacrifice</i> by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered. And because of an offense the army will be given <i>to the horn</i> along with the regular sacrifice; and it will hurl truth to the ground and do <i>as it pleases</i> and be successful. Because of rebellion, the LORD’s people and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground.
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to him, “How long until the fulfillment of the vision of the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, and the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host to be trampled?” Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who spoke, “For how long is the vision concerning the regular burnt offering, the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and host to be trampled underfoot?” Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain <i>saint</i> which spake, How long <i>shall be</i> the vision <i>concerning</i> the daily <i>sacrifice</i>, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to that particular one who was speaking, “How long will the vision <i>about</i> the regular sacrifice <i>apply,</i> while the offense causes horror, so as to allow both the sanctuary and the army to be trampled?” Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot of the LORD’s people?”
14 He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be properly restored.” And he said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.” And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. And he said to me, “For 2,300 evenings <i>and</i> mornings; then the sanctuary will be properly restored.” He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated.”
15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there stood before me one having the appearance of a man. When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it. And behold, there stood before me one having the appearance of a man. And it came to pass, when I, <i>even</i> I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it; and behold, standing before me was one who looked like a man. While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there before me stood one who looked like a man.
16 And I heard the voice of a man calling from between the banks of the Ulai: “Gabriel, explain the vision to this man.” And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, and it called, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.” And I heard a man's voice between <i>the banks of</i> Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this <i>man</i> to understand the vision. And I heard the voice of a man between <i>the banks of</i> Ulai, and he called out and said, “Gabriel, explain the vision to this <i>man.</i>” And I heard a man’s voice from the Ulai calling, “Gabriel, tell this man the meaning of the vision.”
17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified and fell facedown. “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.” So he came near where I stood. And when he came, I was frightened and fell on my face. But he said to me, “Understand, O son of man, that the vision is for the time of the end.” So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end <i>shall be</i> the vision. So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; and he said to me, “Son of man, understand that the vision <i>pertains</i> to the time of the end.” As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate. “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”
18 While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me, helped me to my feet, And when he had spoken to me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground. But he touched me and made me stand up. Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright. Now while he was talking with me, I was dazed with my face to the ground; but he touched me and made me stand at my place. While he was speaking to me, I was in a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me and raised me to my feet.
19 and said, “Behold, I will make known to you what will happen in the latter time of wrath, because it concerns the appointed time of the end. He said, “Behold, I will make known to you what shall be at the latter end of the indignation, for it refers to the appointed time of the end. And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end <i>shall be</i>. And he said, “Behold, I am going to inform you of what will occur at the final period of the indignation, because <i>it pertains</i> to the appointed time of the end. He said: “I am going to tell you what will happen later in the time of wrath, because the vision concerns the appointed time of the end.
20 The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia. As for the ram that you saw with the two horns, these are the kings of Media and Persia. The ram which thou sawest having <i>two</i> horns <i>are</i> the kings of Media and Persia. The ram which you saw with the two horns <i>represents</i> the kings of Media and Persia. The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia.
21 The shaggy goat represents the king of Greece, and the large horn between his eyes is the first king. And the goat is the king of Greece. And the great horn between his eyes is the first king. And the rough goat <i>is</i> the king of Grecia: and the great horn that <i>is</i> between his eyes <i>is</i> the first king. The shaggy goat <i>represents</i> the kingdom of Greece, and the large horn that is between his eyes is the first king. The shaggy goat is the king of Greece, and the large horn between its eyes is the first king.
22 The four horns that replaced the broken one represent four kingdoms that will rise from that nation, but will not have the same power. As for the horn that was broken, in place of which four others arose, four kingdoms shall arise from his nation, but not with his power. Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power. The broken <i>horn</i> and the four <i>horns that</i> came up in its place <i>represent</i> four kingdoms <i>which</i> will arise from <i>his</i> nation, although not with his power. The four horns that replaced the one that was broken off represent four kingdoms that will emerge from his nation but will not have the same power.
23 In the latter part of their reign, when the rebellion has reached its full measure, an insolent king, skilled in intrigue, will come to the throne. And at the latter end of their kingdom, when the transgressors have reached their limit, a king of bold face, one who understands riddles, shall arise. And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. “And in the latter period of their dominion, When the wrongdoers have run <i>their course,</i> A king will arise, Insolent and skilled in intrigue. “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue, will arise.
24 His power will be great, but it will not be his own. He will cause terrible destruction and succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men along with the holy people. His power shall be great—but not by his own power; and he shall cause fearful destruction and shall succeed in what he does, and destroy mighty men and the people who are the saints. And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. “And his power will be mighty, but not by his <i>own</i> power, And he will destroy to an extraordinary degree And be successful and do <i>as he pleases;</i> He will destroy mighty men and the holy people. He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy those who are mighty, the holy people.
25 Through his craft and by his hand, he will cause deceit to prosper, and in his own mind he will make himself great. In a time of peace he will destroy many, and he will even stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be broken off, but not by human hands. By his cunning he shall make deceit prosper under his hand, and in his own mind he shall become great. Without warning he shall destroy many. And he shall even rise up against the Prince of princes, and he shall be broken—but by no human hand. And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify <i>himself</i> in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand. “And through his shrewdness He will make deceit a success by his influence; And he will make himself great in his own mind, And he will destroy many while <i>they are</i> at ease. He will even oppose the Prince of princes, But he will be broken without human agency. He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.
26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been spoken is true. Now you must seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.” The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true, but seal up the vision, for it refers to many days from now.” And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told <i>is</i> true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it <i>shall be</i> for many days. “And the vision of the evenings and mornings Which has been told is true; But as for you, keep the vision secret, Because <i>it pertains</i> to many days <i>in the future.</i>” “The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been given you is true, but seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.”
27 I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was confounded by the vision; it was beyond understanding. And I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for some days. Then I rose and went about the king’s business, but I was appalled by the vision and did not understand it. And I Daniel fainted, and was sick <i>certain</i> days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood <i>it</i>. Then I, Daniel, was exhausted and sick for days. Then I got up and carried on the king’s business; but I was astounded at the vision, and there was no one to explain <i>it.</i> I, Daniel, was worn out. I lay exhausted for several days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding.
