The LORD preserves all who love Him,

God faithfully guards and watches over those who belong to Him. Love for the Lord is shown in trust, obedience, and reverence, not merely in outward profession. His care does not promise freedom from hardship, but it assures His people that their lives are secure in His keeping and that He will sustain them according to His purpose.

The contrast underscores both the security of the faithful and the certainty of God’s final judgment against sin.

(20) Preserveth . . . destroy.--Notice this recurrent thought, that the guardianship of the good implies the destruction of the wicked.

Verse 20. - The Lord preserveth all them that love him (comp. Psalm 31:23; Psalm 97:10). But all the wicked will he destroy. The "severity" of God is always set against his "goodness" in Holy Scripture, lest men should misunderstand, and think to obtain salvation though they continue in wickedness (see Exodus 34:6, 7; Romans 2:2-11; Romans 11:22, etc.).

Psalm 145:20 draws a clear line: God lovingly protects every person who loves Him, yet He will decisively judge those who persist in wickedness. His preservation flows from covenant love; His destruction flows from holy justice. The verse invites trust in His safeguarding care and trembling awareness of His righteous judgment, urging every heart to love the Lord and walk in His ways.
