Ready for the Trumpet's Call?
The Trumpet Will Sound: Are We Ready?

The trumpet promise and our blessed hope

“In an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:52). This is not sentiment; it is promise. “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17).

He has prepared a place for us and will come again to take us to Himself (John 14:2–3). We live in the light of “the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).

Ready hearts in an unexpected hour

Readiness is not panic; it is steady faith expressed in obedience. “For this reason, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44). We keep our lamps burning, clothed for service (Luke 12:35).

We watch with joy, not dread. We stand awake and sober, children of the day, armored with faith, love, and hope (1 Thessalonians 5:4–8).

- Repent daily and walk in the light (1 John 1:7–9).

- Guard your heart with Scripture and prayer (Psalm 119:11; Colossians 4:2).

- Stay sober-minded and alert to deception (1 Peter 5:8; Matthew 24:4).

- Abide in Christ and obey His commands (John 15:5, 10).

- Let your hope fuel joy and endurance (Romans 12:12).

Gospel urgency until He comes

God is patient, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). Meanwhile, “this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14).

The One who has all authority sends us to make disciples (Matthew 28:18–20). We go with His presence, His power, and His word.

- A clear gospel: God is holy (Isaiah 6:3); all have sinned (Romans 3:23); Christ died for our sins and rose (1 Corinthians 15:3–4); repent and believe (Mark 1:15; Romans 10:9–10).

- A simple plan: pray for the lost by name; share your testimony; open Scripture; invite a response; connect to a church (Acts 1:8; 16:31; Hebrews 10:25).

- A ready posture: “Always be prepared to give a defense to anyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you, but do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).

Holy lives that match our message

Our future hope purifies our present walk. “Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as Christ is pure” (1 John 3:3). “The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near. So let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12).

Sanctification is God’s will (1 Thessalonians 4:3–7). We fight sin by the Spirit and adorn the gospel with holiness (Romans 8:13; Titus 2:10).

- Put off: falsehood, rage, impurity, greed, slander (Ephesians 4:25–31; Colossians 3:5–9).

- Put on: truth, kindness, purity, contentment, forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32; Colossians 3:10–14).

- Train habits: Scripture, prayer, fasting, generosity, hospitality (1 Timothy 4:7–8; Matthew 6:1–18; Romans 12:13).

Strengthening the church as the Day draws near

We do not walk alone. “Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25). God builds His body through the Word, fellowship, and prayer (Acts 2:42), fitting us together to maturity and mission (Ephesians 4:11–16).

Healthy churches help saints endure, families flourish, and the lost find life in Christ.

- Gather meaningfully: Word-centered worship, the Lord’s Table, prayer (Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 11:26).

- Disciple intentionally: “Entrust to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2).

- Shepherd well: watch over souls; practice loving correction; care for widows and the weak (Hebrews 13:17; Galatians 6:1–2; James 1:27).

Steadfast through suffering and trial

Trials are not strange; they refine faith (1 Peter 4:12–13). “Our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory that is far beyond comparison... So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen” (2 Corinthians 4:17–18).

Creation groans; we groan; but hope holds (Romans 8:18–25). Christ’s return brings relief and reward.

- Remember your crown and calling (2 Timothy 4:8; Revelation 2:10).

- Rejoice in grace, not circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18).

- Resist the devil firm in the faith (1 Peter 5:9).

- Share burdens and comfort the afflicted (Galatians 6:2; 2 Corinthians 1:3–4).

Stewardship under the Master’s eye

The returning Master expects faithful stewards (Matthew 25:14–30; Luke 19:11–27). Every gift is for His glory (1 Peter 4:10–11). “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord... you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as your reward” (Colossians 3:23–24).

Readiness is not idleness; it is diligence for Christ’s sake until He comes.

- Time: plan your days around the kingdom (Ephesians 5:15–16; Psalm 90:12).

- Treasure: give first and freely (2 Corinthians 9:6–8; 1 Timothy 6:17–19).

- Talent: serve in your Spirit-given gifts (Romans 12:4–8).

- Testimony: shine in word and deed (Matthew 5:16; Philippians 2:14–16).

Comfort one another with these words

We do not grieve as those without hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13). “Therefore encourage one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:18). Christ’s appearing gathers His people, reunites loved ones in Him, and ends death’s sting (1 Corinthians 15:54–57).

Hope comforts the dying and strengthens the living.

- Speak Scripture at bedsides and gravesides (Psalm 23; John 11:25–26).

- Sing Christ-exalting hymns of hope (Colossians 3:16).

- Keep eternity in view in every memorial (Hebrews 9:27–28).

Stand firm in truth and love

Deception will abound, but Scripture is sufficient. Hold fast “the traditions” taught by the apostles (2 Thessalonians 2:15). Test the spirits; contend for the faith once for all delivered to the saints (1 John 4:1; Jude 3).

Truth and love are not rivals; they keep us steady and fruitful in the last days.

- Read the whole counsel of God; memorize key passages (Acts 20:27; Psalm 119:11).

- Keep sound doctrine and a clear conscience (1 Timothy 4:6–7, 16).

- Practice discernment without cynicism (Philippians 1:9–11; Ephesians 4:15).

Living ready today

Readiness looks like ordinary faithfulness. “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that” (James 4:15).

1) Seek God early in Word and prayer (Mark 1:35; Psalm 5:3).

2) Walk in repentance and joy (Acts 3:19; Nehemiah 8:10).

3) Do the next right thing in love (1 Corinthians 16:14).

4) Share Christ with at least one person (Romans 1:16).

5) Encourage a brother or sister (Hebrews 3:13).

6) Work heartily and honestly (Colossians 3:23–24).

7) Practice generosity and hospitality (Hebrews 13:2, 16).

8) End the day with thanksgiving and hope (1 Thessalonians 5:18; Revelation 22:20).

Even so—come, Lord Jesus

The promise stands: “Yes, I am coming soon” (Revelation 22:20). By grace, we live ready, laboring in love, longing for His appearing, and steady until the trumpet sounds.

Timing the trumpet: holding convictions with humility

Many hold a pre-tribulational catching up (1 Thessalonians 1:10), others mid- or post-tribulational. Scripture is clear on Christ’s visible return and our gathering, but less explicit on sequencing. We hold firm on certainty and imminence; we hold humbly on timing (Matthew 24:36; 2 Thessalonians 2).

- Major anchors: resurrection, transformation, and reunion (1 Corinthians 15:51–54; 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17).

- Practical unity: preach repentance, holiness, mission, and hope regardless of timeline (Titus 2:11–14).

Israel, the nations, and the Church

God’s covenant purposes stand. “God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable” (Romans 11:29). The fullness of the Gentiles and the salvation of Israel fit God’s wise plan (Romans 11:12, 25–27).

- Bless the Jewish people; preach Christ to all (Genesis 12:3; Acts 1:8; Romans 1:16).

- Watch the nations and pray for peace in Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6; Luke 21:24).

The resurrection body and our transformation

We will bear the image of the man from heaven (1 Corinthians 15:49). “Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there... who will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body” (Philippians 3:20–21).

- Features: imperishable, glorious, powerful, spiritual (1 Corinthians 15:42–44).

- Fruit: fearless obedience now; death loses its threat (Hebrews 2:14–15).

The judgment seat and eternal rewards

“We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10). This is for believers’ works, not their salvation. Some works endure; some burn (1 Corinthians 3:12–15).

- Run for crowns: righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8), life (James 1:12; Revelation 2:10), glory (1 Peter 5:4), rejoicing (1 Thessalonians 2:19).

- Motive: the smile of the Lord, not the praise of men (Matthew 6:1–4; Colossians 3:23–24).

The great white throne and holy urgency

“I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened” (Revelation 20:12). Those not in the Book of Life face the second death (Revelation 20:11–15). Daniel foresaw the same resurrection divide (Daniel 12:2).

- Preach a clear gospel with tears (Acts 20:31).

- Plead with sinners; God makes His appeal through us (2 Corinthians 5:20).

Signs of the times without date-setting

Wars, famines, earthquakes, persecution, apostasy, and global proclamation will rise (Matthew 24:4–14). We observe wisely, avoid speculation, and stay on mission.

- Watch for deception and lawlessness; endure in love (Matthew 24:12–13).

- Hold fast the trustworthy word (Titus 1:9).

The man of lawlessness and the love of truth

“Let no one deceive you in any way” (2 Thessalonians 2:3). Strong delusion meets those who “refused the love of the truth” (2 Thessalonians 2:10). The restrainer will be removed in God’s time; Christ will slay the lawless one by His breath (2 Thessalonians 2:7–8).

- Cultivate a deep love for Scripture (Psalm 19:7–11).

- Practice truth in love in your home and church (Ephesians 4:15).

Assurance, perseverance, and endurance

Christ keeps His sheep (John 10:27–29). He sanctifies and preserves His people entirely. “He who calls you is faithful, and He will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24).

- Assurance fuels endurance (Hebrews 10:22–23, 36).

- Keep yourselves in the love of God; He is able to keep you from stumbling (Jude 21, 24–25).

Prophecy in evangelism and discipleship

Prophecy confirms Scripture’s reliability and pricks the conscience. Use fulfilled prophecies (Isaiah 53; Psalm 22; Daniel 9) to point to Christ, then call for repentance and faith.

- In discipleship, anchor hope in the return of Christ and train for everyday faithfulness (Hebrews 6:19; Luke 9:23).

Households ready for His appearing

Disciple at home. Lay up the Word on your heart and talk of it daily (Deuteronomy 6:6–9). Fathers, bring up children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).

- Family rhythms: Scripture at table, prayer at bedtime, Lord’s Day priority, hospitality on purpose (Joshua 24:15; Romans 12:13).

Pastoral care for anxious hearts

“The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing... and the peace of God... will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:5–7). Apply hope to fear, truth to lies, and presence to loneliness.

- Gentle counsel, persistent prayer, practical help (Galatians 6:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:14).

Healthy church rhythms for the last days

Steady means of grace form ready saints: expository preaching, fervent prayer, disciplined fellowship, meaningful membership, and mission.

- Pray “come, Lord Jesus,” preach Christ crucified, equip every member, and plant churches (Revelation 22:20; 1 Corinthians 2:2; Ephesians 4:12; Acts 13:1–3).

Prepared, not panicked

Wisdom plans; faith rests. Consider the ant’s prudence (Proverbs 6:6–8) and seek first the kingdom (Matthew 6:33–34). Be generous and ready to share (1 Timothy 6:17–19).

- Practical steps: reasonable savings, shared resources, community care, and gospel-first priorities (Acts 4:34–35).

The marriage supper and the pure bride

“Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him the glory! For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready” (Revelation 19:7). Purity and perseverance honor our Bridegroom.

- Keep garments unstained by the world (James 1:27).

- Walk worthy of your calling (Ephesians 4:1).

Finishing the mission

A great multitude from every nation will worship the Lamb (Revelation 7:9–10). We labor to that day as wise builders and faithful heralds.

- Prioritize the unreached (Romans 15:20–21).

- Pray, give, send, and go until all hear (Matthew 9:37–38; 24:14).

- Wait for His Son from heaven, “Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath” (1 Thessalonians 1:10).

God's plan: unite Israel, bless nations.
