The Descendants of Judah

1  בְּנֵ֖י (The sons) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah):

פֶּ֧רֶץ (Perez), חֶצְר֛וֹן (Hezron), וְכַרְמִ֖י (and Carmi), וְח֥וּר (and Hur), וְשׁוֹבָֽל׃ (and Shobal).

2  וּרְאָיָ֤ה (And Reaiah) בֶן־ (son) שׁוֹבָל֙ (of Shobal) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) יַ֔חַת (Jahath), וְיַ֣חַת (and Jahath) הֹלִ֔יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) אֲחוּמַ֖י (Ahumai) וְאֶת־ (and) לָ֑הַד (Lahad). אֵ֖לֶּה (These were) מִשְׁפְּח֥וֹת (the clans) הַצָּֽרְעָתִֽי׃ס (of the Zorathite).

3  וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (And these were) אֲבִ֣י (of the father) עֵיטָ֔ם (of Etam): יִזְרְעֶ֥אל (Jezreel), וְיִשְׁמָ֖א (and Ishma), וְיִדְבָּ֑שׁ (and Idbash). וְשֵׁ֥ם (And the name) אֲחוֹתָ֖ם (of their sister) הַצְלֶלְפּֽוֹנִי׃ (was Hazelelponi). 4  וּפְנוּאֵל֙ (And Penuel was) אֲבִ֣י (the father) גְדֹ֔ר (of Gedor), וְעֵ֖זֶר (and Ezer was) אֲבִ֣י (the father) חוּשָׁ֑ה (of Hushah).

אֵ֤לֶּה (These were) בְנֵי־ (the sons) חוּר֙ (of Hur) בְּכ֣וֹר (the firstborn) אֶפְרָ֔תָה (of Ephrathah) אֲבִ֖י (the father) בֵּ֥ית (of Beth-) לָֽחֶם׃ (lehem).

5  וּלְאַשְׁחוּר֙ (And Ashhur) אֲבִ֣י (the father) תְק֔וֹעַ (of Tekoa) הָי֖וּ (had) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) נָשִׁ֑ים (wives), חֶלְאָ֖ה (Helah) וְנַעֲרָֽה׃ (and Naarah).

6  וַתֵּ֨לֶד (And bore) ל֤וֹ (to him) נַעֲרָה֙ (Naarah) אֶת־ (-) אֲחֻזָּ֣ם (Ahuzzam), וְאֶת־ (and) חֵ֔פֶר (Hepher), וְאֶת־ (and) תֵּימְנִ֖י (Temeni), וְאֶת־ (and) הָאֲחַשְׁתָּרִ֑י (Haahashtari). אֵ֖לֶּה (These were) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) נַעֲרָֽה׃ (of Naarah).

7  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) חֶלְאָ֑ה (of Helah): צֶ֥רֶת (ZEreth), יִצְחָר (and Zohar), וְאֶתְנָֽן׃ (and Ethnan). 8  וְק֣וֹץ (And Koz) הוֹלִ֔יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) עָנ֖וּב (Anub), וְאֶת־ (and) הַצֹּבֵבָ֑ה (Zobebah), וּמִשְׁפְּח֥וֹת (and the clans) אֲחַרְחֵ֖ל (of Aharhel) בֶּן־ (son) הָרֽוּם׃ (of Harum).

The Prayer of Jabez

9  וַיְהִ֣י (And was) יַעְבֵּ֔ץ (Jabez) נִכְבָּ֖ד (more honorable) מֵאֶחָ֑יו (than his brothers), וְאִמּ֗וֹ (and his mother) קָרְאָ֨ה (called) שְׁמ֤וֹ (his name) יַעְבֵּץ֙ (Jabez), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), כִּ֥י (Because) יָלַ֖דְתִּי (I have brought forth) בְּעֹֽצֶב׃ (in pain).

10  וַיִּקְרָ֣א (And called out) יַ֠עְבֵּץ (Jabez) לֵאלֹהֵ֨י (to the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), אִם־ (If only) בָּרֵ֨ךְ (blessing) תְּבָרֲכֵ֜נִי (You would bless me) וְהִרְבִּ֤יתָ (and enlarge) אֶת־ (-) גְּבוּלִי֙ (my territory)! וְהָיְתָ֤ה (And may be) יָדְךָ֙ (Your hand) עִמִּ֔י (with me), וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ (that You would keep me) מֵּרָעָ֖ה (from evil), לְבִלְתִּ֣י (not) עָצְבִּ֑י (to grieve me).

וַיָּבֵ֥א (And brought in) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) אֵ֥ת (for him) אֲשֶׁר־ (that which) שָׁאָֽל׃ (he asked).

11  וּכְל֥וּב (And Chelub) אֲחִֽי־ (the brother) שׁוּחָ֖ה (of Shuhah) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) מְחִ֑יר (Mehir); ה֖וּא (he was) אֲבִ֥י (the father) אֶשְׁתּֽוֹן׃ (of Eshton). 12  וְאֶשְׁתּ֗וֹן (And Eshton) הוֹלִ֞יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֤ית (Beth-) רָפָא֙ (rapha), וְאֶת־ (and) פָּסֵ֔חַ (Paseah), וְאֶת־ (and) תְּחִנָּ֖ה (Tehinnah) אֲבִ֣י (father) עִ֣יר (of Ir-) נָחָ֑שׁ (nahash). אֵ֖לֶּה (These were) אַנְשֵׁ֥י (the men) רֵכָֽה׃ס (of Rechah).

13  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) קְנַ֔ז (of Kenaz):

עָתְנִיאֵ֖ל (Othniel) וּשְׂרָיָ֑ה (and Seraiah).

וּבְנֵ֥י (And the sons) עָתְנִיאֵ֖ל (of Othniel):

חֲתַֽת׃ (Hathath).

14  וּמְעוֹנֹתַ֖י (And Meonothai) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) עָפְרָ֑ה (Ophrah), וּשְׂרָיָ֗ה (and Seraiah) הוֹלִ֤יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) יוֹאָב֙ (Joab), אֲבִי֙ (the father) גֵּ֣יא (of Ge-) חֲרָשִׁ֔ים (harashim), כִּ֥י (for) חֲרָשִׁ֖ים (craftsmen) הָיֽוּ׃פ (they were).

15  וּבְנֵי֙ (And the sons) כָּלֵ֣ב (of Caleb) בֶּן־ (son) יְפֻנֶּ֔ה (of Jephunneh):

עִ֥ירוּ (Iru), אֵלָ֖ה (Elah), וָנָ֑עַם (and Naam).

וּבְנֵ֥י (And the sons) אֵלָ֖ה (of Elah): וּקְנַֽז׃ (And Kenaz).

16  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) יְהַלֶּלְאֵ֑ל (of Jehallelel):

זִ֣יף (ZIph), וְזִיפָ֔ה (and Ziphah), תִּירְיָ֖א (Tiria), וַאֲשַׂרְאֵֽל׃ (and Asarel).

17  וּבֶן־ (And the sons) עֶזְרָ֔ה (of Ezrah):

יֶ֥תֶר (Jether), וּמֶ֖רֶד (and Mered), וְעֵ֣פֶר (and Epher), וְיָל֑וֹן (and Jalon).

וַתַּ֙הַר֙ (And she bore) אֶת־ (-) מִרְיָ֣ם (Miriam), וְאֶת־ (and) שַׁמַּ֔י (Shammai), וְאֶת־ (and) יִשְׁבָּ֖ח (Ishbah) אֲבִ֥י (father) אֶשְׁתְּמֹֽעַ׃ (of Eshtemoa). 18  וְאִשְׁתּ֣וֹ (And His wife), הַיְהֻדִיָּ֗ה (a Judean), יָלְדָ֞ה (bore) אֶת־ (-) יֶ֨רֶד (Jared) אֲבִ֤י (the father) גְדוֹר֙ (of Gedor), וְאֶת־ (and) חֶ֙בֶר֙ (Heber) אֲבִ֣י (the father) שׂוֹכ֔וֹ (of Sochoh), וְאֶת־ (and) יְקֽוּתִיאֵ֖ל (Jekuthiel) אֲבִ֣י (the father) זָנ֑וֹחַ (of Zanoah). וְאֵ֗לֶּה (And these were) בְּנֵי֙ (the sons) בִּתְיָ֣ה (of Bithiah) בַת־ (the daughter) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) לָקַ֖ח (took) מָֽרֶד׃ס (Mered).

19  וּבְנֵי֙ (And the sons) אֵ֣שֶׁת (of the wife) הֽוֹדִיָּ֔ה (of Hodiah) אֲח֣וֹת (the sister) נַ֔חַם (of Naham):

אֲבִ֥י (The father) קְעִילָ֖ה (of Keilah) הַגַּרְמִ֑י (the Garmite), וְאֶשְׁתְּמֹ֖עַ (and of Eshtemoa) הַמַּעֲכָתִֽי׃ (the Maachathite).

20  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) שִׁימ֔וֹן (of Shimon):

אַמְנ֣וֹן (Amnon) וְרִנָּ֔ה (and Rinnah), בֶּן־ (Ben-) חָנָ֖ן (hanan), וְתוֹלוֹן (and Tilon).

וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) יִשְׁעִ֔י (of Ishi):

זוֹחֵ֖ת (ZOheth) וּבֶן־ (and Ben-) זוֹחֵֽת׃ (and zoheth).

21  בְּנֵי֙ (The sons) שֵׁלָ֣ה (of Shelah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah):

עֵ֚ר (Er) אֲבִ֣י (the father) לֵכָ֔ה (of Lecah), וְלַעְדָּ֖ה (and Laadah) אֲבִ֣י (the father) מָרֵשָׁ֑ה (of Mareshah), וּמִשְׁפְּח֛וֹת (and the clans) בֵּית־ (of the house) עֲבֹדַ֥ת (of the workers) הַבֻּ֖ץ (of the linen) לְבֵ֥ית (of the house) אַשְׁבֵּֽעַ׃ (of Ashbea), 22  וְיוֹקִ֞ים (and Jokim), וְאַנְשֵׁ֣י (and the men) כֹזֵבָ֗א (of Cozeba), וְיוֹאָ֧שׁ (and Joash), וְשָׂרָ֛ף (and Saraph), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בָּעֲל֥וּ (ruled) לְמוֹאָ֖ב (in Moab), וְיָשֻׁ֣בִי (and Jashubi-) לָ֑חֶם (lehem). וְהַדְּבָרִ֖ים (And the records are) עַתִּיקִֽים׃ (ancient). 23  הֵ֚מָּה (They were) הַיּ֣וֹצְרִ֔ים (the potters), וְיֹשְׁבֵ֥י (and those who dwelt) נְטָעִ֖ים (at Netaim) וּגְדֵרָ֑ה (and Gederah). עִם־ (With) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (the king) בִּמְלַאכְתּ֖וֹ (for his work) יָ֥שְׁבוּ (they dwelt) שָֽׁם׃ס (there).

The Descendants of Simeon

24  בְּנֵ֖י (The sons) שִׁמְע֑וֹן (of Simeon):

נְמוּאֵ֣ל (Nemuel), וְיָמִ֔ין (and Jamin), יָרִ֖יב (Jarib), זֶ֥רַח (Zerah), שָׁאֽוּל׃ (and Shaul).

25  שַׁלֻּ֥ם (Shallum) בְּנ֛וֹ (his son), מִבְשָׂ֥ם (Mibsam) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son), מִשְׁמָ֥ע (and Mishma) בְּנֽוֹ׃ (his son).

26  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) מִשְׁמָ֑ע (of Mishma):

חַמּוּאֵ֥ל (Hamuel) בְּנ֛וֹ (his son), זַכּ֥וּר (Zaccur) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son), שִׁמְעִ֥י (and Shimei) בְנֽוֹ׃ (his son).

27  וּלְשִׁמְעִ֞י (And Shimei had) בָּנִ֨ים (sons) שִׁשָּׁ֤ה (six) עָשָׂר֙ (and ten) וּבָנ֣וֹת (and daughters) שֵׁ֔שׁ (six), וּלְאֶחָ֕יו (and his brothers) אֵ֖ין (did not have) בָּנִ֣ים (sons) רַבִּ֑ים (many), וְכֹל֙ (and any) מִשְׁפַּחְתָּ֔ם (of their clans) לֹ֥א (not) הִרְבּ֖וּ (did multiply) עַד־ (as much as) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יְהוּדָֽה׃ס (of Judah). 28  וַיֵּֽשְׁב֛וּ (And they dwelt) בִּבְאֵֽר־ (at Beer-) שֶׁ֥בַע (sheba), וּמוֹלָדָ֖ה (and Moladah), וַחֲצַ֥ר (and Hazar-) שׁוּעָֽל׃ (shual), 29  וּבְבִלְהָ֥ה (and Bilhah), וּבְעֶ֖צֶם (and Ezem), וּבְתוֹלָֽד׃ (and Tolad), 30  וּבִבְתוּאֵ֥ל (and Bethuel), וּבְחָרְמָ֖ה (and Hormah), וּבְצִֽיקְלָֽג׃ (and Ziklag), 31  וּבְבֵ֤ית (and Beth-) מַרְכָּבוֹת֙ (marcaboth), וּבַחֲצַ֣ר (and Hazar-) סוּסִ֔ים (susim), וּבְבֵ֥ית (and Beth-) בִּרְאִ֖י (and biri), וּֽבְשַׁעֲרָ֑יִם (and in Shaaraim). אֵ֥לֶּה (These were) עָרֵיהֶ֖ם (their cities) עַד־ (until) מְלֹ֥ךְ (the reign) דָּוִֽיד׃ (of David). 32  וְחַצְרֵיהֶם֙ (And their villages were) עֵיטָ֣ם (Etam), וָעַ֔יִן (and Ain), רִמּ֥וֹן (Rimmon), וְתֹ֖כֶן (and Tochen), וְעָשָׁ֑ן (and Ashan)— עָרִ֖ים (cities) חָמֵֽשׁ׃ (five). 33  וְכָל־ (And all) חַצְרֵיהֶ֗ם (the villages) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that were) סְבִיב֛וֹת (around) הֶעָרִ֥ים (the cities) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these), עַד־ (as far as) בָּ֑עַל (Baal). זֹ֚את (These were) מוֹשְׁבֹתָ֔ם (their dwelling places), וְהִתְיַחְשָׂ֖ם (and they kept a genealogy) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them):

34  וּמְשׁוֹבָ֣ב (And Meshobab), וְיַמְלֵ֔ךְ (and Jamlech), וְיוֹשָׁ֖ה (and Joshah) בֶּן־ (son) אֲמַצְיָֽה׃ (of Amaziah), 35  וְיוֹאֵ֑ל (and Joel), וְיֵהוּא֙ (and Jehu) בֶּן־ (son) י֣וֹשִׁבְיָ֔ה (of Joshibiah), בֶּן־ (son) שְׂרָיָ֖ה (of Seraiah), בֶּן־ (son) עֲשִׂיאֵֽל׃ (of Asiel)), 36  וְאֶלְיוֹעֵינַ֡י (and Elioenai), וְֽיַעֲקֹ֡בָה (and Jaakobah), וִ֠ישׁוֹחָיָה (and Jeshohaiah), וַעֲשָׂיָ֧ה (and Asaiah), וַעֲדִיאֵ֛ל (and Adiel), וִישִׂימִאֵ֖ל (and Jesimiel), וּבְנָיָֽה׃ (and Benaiah), 37  וְזִיזָ֨א (and Ziza) בֶן־ (son) שִׁפְעִ֧י (of Shiphi), בֶן־ (son) אַלּ֛וֹן (of Allon), בֶּן־ (son) יְדָיָ֥ה (of Jedaiah), בֶן־ (son) שִׁמְרִ֖י (of Shimri), בֶּן־ (son) שְׁמַֽעְיָֽה׃ (of Shemaiah)).

38  אֵ֚לֶּה (These) הַבָּאִ֣ים (coming in) בְּשֵׁמ֔וֹת (by name were) נְשִׂיאִ֖ים (leaders) בְּמִשְׁפְּחוֹתָ֑ם (in their clans), וּבֵית֙ (and the house) אֲב֣וֹתֵיהֶ֔ם (of their father) פָּרְצ֖וּ (increased) לָרֽוֹב׃ (greatly). 39  וַיֵּלְכוּ֙ (And they went) לִמְב֣וֹא (to the entrance) גְדֹ֔ר (of Gedor), עַ֖ד (as far as) לְמִזְרַ֣ח (the east side) הַגָּ֑יְא (of the valley), לְבַקֵּ֥שׁ (to seek) מִרְעֶ֖ה (pasture) לְצֹאנָֽם׃ (for their flocks). 40  וַֽיִּמְצְא֤וּ (And they found) מִרְעֶה֙ (pasture) שָׁמֵ֣ן (rich) וָט֔וֹב (and good), וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (and the land) רַחֲבַ֣ת (broad) יָדַ֔יִם (of sides), וְשֹׁקֶ֖טֶת (and quiet), וּשְׁלֵוָ֑ה (and peaceful). כִּ֣י (For) מִן־ (some) חָ֔ם (Hamites) הַיֹּשְׁבִ֥ים (had lived) שָׁ֖ם (there) לְפָנִֽים׃ (formerly).

41  וַיָּבֹ֡אוּ (And came) אֵלֶּה֩ (these) הַכְּתוּבִ֨ים (written) בְּשֵׁמ֜וֹת (by name) בִּימֵ֣י׀ (in the days) יְחִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ (of Hezekiah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah), וַיַּכּ֨וּ (and they struck) אֶת־ (-) אָהֳלֵיהֶ֜ם (their tents), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמְּעִינִים (the Meunites) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) נִמְצְאוּ־ (were found) שָׁ֙מָּה֙ (there), וַיַּחֲרִימֻם֙ (and they devoted them to destruction) עַד־ (to) הַיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֔ה (this). וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ (And they dwelt) תַּחְתֵּיהֶ֑ם (in their place), כִּֽי־ (because) מִרְעֶ֥ה (there was pasture) לְצֹאנָ֖ם (for their flocks) שָֽׁם׃ (there). 42  וּמֵהֶ֣ם׀ (And) מִן־ (some) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) שִׁמְע֗וֹן (of Simeon) הָלְכוּ֙ (went) לְהַ֣ר (to Mount) שֵׂעִ֔יר (Seir), אֲנָשִׁ֖ים (men) חֲמֵ֣שׁ (five) מֵא֑וֹת (hundred), וּפְלַטְיָ֡ה (and Pelatiah), וּ֠נְעַרְיָה (and Neariah), וּרְפָיָ֧ה (and Rephaiah), וְעֻזִּיאֵ֛ל (and Uzziel), בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׁעִ֖י (of Ishi) בְּרֹאשָֽׁם׃ (at their head). 43  וַיַּכּ֕וּ (And they defeated) אֶת־ (-) שְׁאֵרִ֥ית (the remnant) הַפְּלֵטָ֖ה (who had escaped) לַעֲמָלֵ֑ק (of Amalek), וַיֵּ֣שְׁבוּ (and they have dwelt) שָׁ֔ם (there) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).
