Uzziah Reigns in Judah
(2 Kings 14:21–22; 2 Kings 15:1–7)

1  וַיִּקְח֞וּ (And took) כָּל־ (all) עַ֤ם (the people) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah) אֶת־ (-) עֻזִּיָּ֔הוּ (Uzziah)— וְה֕וּא (and he) בֶּן־ (a son) שֵׁ֥שׁ (of six) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten) שָׁנָ֑ה (years)— וַיַּמְלִ֣יכוּ (and they made him king) אֹת֔וֹ (-) תַּ֖חַת (in place) אָבִ֥יו (of his father) אֲמַצְיָֽהוּ׃ (Amaziah). 2  ה֚וּא (He) בָּנָ֣ה (rebuilt) אֶת־ (-) אֵיל֔וֹת (Eloth) וַיְשִׁיבֶ֖הָ (and restored it) לִֽיהוּדָ֑ה (to Judah) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) שְׁכַֽב־ (rested) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָֽיו׃פ (his fathers).

3  בֶּן־ (A son) שֵׁ֨שׁ (of six) עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה (and ten) שָׁנָה֙ (years) עֻזִּיָּ֣הוּ (was Uzziah) בְמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וַחֲמִשִּׁ֤ים (and fifty) וּשְׁתַּ֙יִם֙ (and two) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of His mother) יְכִילְיָה (was Jecholiah) מִן־ (of) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (Jerusalem). 4  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הַיָּשָׁ֖ר (right) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (had done) אֲמַצְיָ֥הוּ (Amaziah) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father). 5  וַיְהִי֙ (And He) לִדְרֹ֣שׁ (sought) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) בִּימֵ֣י (in the days) זְכַרְיָ֔הוּ (of Zechariah), הַמֵּבִ֖ין (who had understanding) בִּרְאֹ֣ת (in the fear) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God). וּבִימֵי֙ (And in the days) דָּרְשׁ֣וֹ (of his seeking) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), הִצְלִיח֖וֹ (made him prosper) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ס (God).

6  וַיֵּצֵא֙ (And he went out) וַיִּלָּ֣חֶם (and made war) בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (against the Philistines). וַיִּפְרֹ֞ץ (And he broke down) אֶת־ (-) ח֣וֹמַת (the wall) גַּ֗ת (of Gath), וְאֵת֙ (and) חוֹמַ֣ת (the wall) יַבְנֵ֔ה (of Jabneh), וְאֵ֖ת (and) חוֹמַ֣ת (the wall) אַשְׁדּ֑וֹד (of Ashdod). וַיִּבְנֶ֣ה (And he built) עָרִ֔ים (cities) בְּאַשְׁדּ֖וֹד (around Ashdod), וּבַפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (and among the Philistines). 7  וַיַּעְזְרֵ֨הוּ (And helped him) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) עַל־ (against) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֧ים (the Philistines), וְעַל־ (and against) הָעַרְבִיִּים (the Arabs) הַיֹּשְׁבִ֥ים (dwelling) בְּגוּר־ (in Gur-) בָּ֖עַל (baal), וְהַמְּעוּנִֽים׃ (and against the Meunites). 8  וַיִּתְּנ֧וּ (And brought) הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֛ים (the Ammonites) מִנְחָ֖ה (tribute) לְעֻזִּיָּ֑הוּ (to Uzziah), וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ (and spread) שְׁמוֹ֙ (his name) עַד־ (as far) לְב֣וֹא (as the entrance) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt); כִּ֥י (for) הֶחֱזִ֖יק (he became strong) עַד־ (even to) לְמָֽעְלָה׃ (exceedingly).

9  וַיִּ֨בֶן (And built) עֻזִּיָּ֤הוּ (Uzziah) מִגְדָּלִים֙ (towers) בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (in Jerusalem) עַל־ (by) שַׁ֧עַר (the Gate) הַפִּנָּ֛ה (of the Corner) וְעַל־ (and by) שַׁ֥עַר (the Gate) הַגַּ֖יְא (of the Valley), וְעַל־ (and by) הַמִּקְצ֑וֹעַ (the Angle), וַֽיְחַזְּקֵֽם׃ (and he fortified them). 10  וַיִּ֨בֶן (And he built) מִגְדָּלִ֜ים (towers) בַּמִּדְבָּ֗ר (in the desert), וַיַּחְצֹב֙ (and he dug) בֹּר֣וֹת (wells) רַבִּ֔ים (many), כִּ֤י (for) מִקְנֶה־ (livestock) רַּב֙ (much) הָ֣יָה (were) ל֔וֹ (unto him) וּבַשְּׁפֵלָ֖ה (and both in the Shephelah) וּבַמִּישׁ֑וֹר (and in the plains), אִכָּרִ֣ים (plowmen) וְכֹֽרְמִ֗ים (and vinedressers) בֶּהָרִים֙ (in the hill country) וּבַכַּרְמֶ֔ל (and in Carmel); כִּֽי־ (for) אֹהֵ֥ב (a lover) אֲדָמָ֖ה (of the ground) הָיָֽה׃ס (he was).

11  וַיְהִ֣י (And was) לְעֻזִּיָּ֡הוּ (unto Uzziah) חַיִל֩ (an army) עֹשֵׂ֨ה (making) מִלְחָמָ֜ה (war), יוֹצְאֵ֧י (going forth) צָבָ֣א (to the host) לִגְד֗וּד (by troops), בְּמִסְפַּר֙ (in the number) פְּקֻדָּתָ֔ם (of their reckoning) בְּיַד֙ (by the hand) יְעוּאֵל (of Jeiel) הַסּוֹפֵ֔ר (the scribe) וּמַעֲשֵׂיָ֖הוּ (and Maaseiah) הַשּׁוֹטֵ֑ר (the officer) עַ֚ל (by) יַד־ (the hand) חֲנַנְיָ֔הוּ (of Hananiah), מִשָּׂרֵ֖י (of the captains) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king). 12  כֹּ֠ל (All) מִסְפַּ֞ר (the number) רָאשֵׁ֤י (of the heads) הָאָבוֹת֙ (of the fathers) לְגִבּ֣וֹרֵי (of the mighty men) חָ֔יִל (of valor) אַלְפַּ֖יִם (was two thousand) וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) מֵאֽוֹת׃ (hundred). 13  וְעַל־ (And under) יָדָם֩ (their hand) חֵ֨יל (was the force) צָבָ֜א (of the host), שְׁלֹ֧שׁ (three) מֵא֣וֹת (hundred) אֶ֗לֶף (thousand) וְשִׁבְעַ֤ת (and seven) אֲלָפִים֙ (thousand) וַחֲמֵ֣שׁ (and five) מֵא֔וֹת (hundred), עוֹשֵׂ֥י (making) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (war) בְּכֹ֣חַ (with power) חָ֑יִל (mighty) לַעְזֹ֥ר (to help) לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) עַל־ (against) הָאוֹיֵֽב׃ (the enemy).

14  וַיָּכֶן֩ (And prepared) לָהֶ֨ם (for them) עֻזִּיָּ֜הוּ (Uzziah) לְכָל־ (for all) הַצָּבָ֗א (the host) מָגִנִּ֤ים (shields), וּרְמָחִים֙ (and spears), וְכ֣וֹבָעִ֔ים (and helmets), וְשִׁרְיֹנ֖וֹת (and body armor), וּקְשָׁת֑וֹת (and bows), וּלְאַבְנֵ֖י (and to stones) קְלָעִֽים׃ (of the slings). 15  וַיַּ֣עַשׂ׀ (And he made) בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֨ם (in Jerusalem) חִשְּׁבֹנ֜וֹת (devices) מַחֲשֶׁ֣בֶת (invented by) חוֹשֵׁ֗ב (skillful men) לִהְי֤וֹת (to be) עַל־ (on) הַמִּגְדָּלִים֙ (the towers) וְעַל־ (and) הַפִּנּ֔וֹת (the corners), לִירוֹא֙ (to shoot) בַּֽחִצִּ֔ים (the arrows) וּבָאֲבָנִ֖ים (and the stones) גְּדֹל֑וֹת (large). וַיֵּצֵ֤א (And spread) שְׁמוֹ֙ (his fame) עַד־ (even to) לְמֵ֣רָח֔וֹק (a distance), כִּֽי־ (for) הִפְלִ֥יא (he was marvelously) לְהֵעָזֵ֖ר (helped) עַ֥ד (until) כִּֽי־ (that) חָזָֽק׃ (he became strong).

16  וּכְחֶזְקָת֗וֹ (And at his strength) גָּבַ֤הּ (was lifted up) לִבּוֹ֙ (his heart) עַד־ (to) לְהַשְׁחִ֔ית (destruction), וַיִּמְעַ֖ל (and he trespassed) בַּיהוָ֣ה (against YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֑יו (his God), וַיָּבֹא֙ (and he went) אֶל־ (into) הֵיכַ֣ל (the temple) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) לְהַקְטִ֖יר (to burn incense) עַל־ (on) מִזְבַּ֥ח (the altar) הַקְּטֹֽרֶת׃ (of incense).

17  וַיָּבֹ֥א (And went in) אַחֲרָ֖יו (after him) עֲזַרְיָ֣הוּ (Azariah) הַכֹּהֵ֑ן (the priest), וְעִמּ֞וֹ (and with him) כֹּהֲנִ֧ים׀ (priests) לַיהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) שְׁמוֹנִ֖ים (eighty) בְּנֵי־ (sons) חָֽיִל׃ (of valor); 18  וַיַּעַמְד֞וּ (and they stood up) עַל־ (against) עֻזִּיָּ֣הוּ (Uzziah) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (the king) וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ (and said) לוֹ֙ (to him), לֹא־ (It is not) לְךָ֣ (for you), עֻזִּיָּ֗הוּ (Uzziah), לְהַקְטִיר֙ (to burn incense) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), כִּ֣י (but) לַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים (for the priests), בְּנֵי־ (the sons) אַהֲרֹ֛ן (of Aaron) הַמְקֻדָּשִׁ֖ים (who are consecrated) לְהַקְטִ֑יר (to burn incense). צֵ֤א (Get out) מִן־ (of) הַמִּקְדָּשׁ֙ (the sanctuary), כִּ֣י (for) מָעַ֔לְתָּ (you have trespassed), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) לְךָ֥ (unto you) לְכָב֖וֹד (is honor) מֵיְהוָ֥ה (from YHWH) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

19  וַיִּזְעַף֙ (And became furious) עֻזִּיָּ֔הוּ (Uzziah), וּבְיָד֥וֹ (and in his hand) מִקְטֶ֖רֶת (was a censer) לְהַקְטִ֑יר (to burn incense). וּבְזַעְפּ֣וֹ (And in his being angry) עִם־ (with) הַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים (the priests), וְ֠הַצָּרַעַת (and the leprosy) זָרְחָ֨ה (broke out) בְמִצְח֜וֹ (on his forehead) לִפְנֵ֤י (before) הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (the priests) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) מֵעַ֖ל (from beside) לְמִזְבַּ֥ח (the altar) הַקְּטֹֽרֶת׃ (the incense). 20  וַיִּ֣פֶן (And looked) אֵלָ֡יו (at him) עֲזַרְיָהוּ֩ (Azariah) כֹהֵ֨ן (priest) הָרֹ֜אשׁ (the chief) וְכָל־ (and all) הַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים (the priests), וְהִנֵּה־ (and behold), ה֤וּא (he was) מְצֹרָע֙ (leprous) בְּמִצְח֔וֹ (on his forehead), וַיַּבְהִל֖וּהוּ (and they rushed him out) מִשָּׁ֑ם (of that place). וְגַם־ (And indeed), הוּא֙ (he) נִדְחַ֣ף (hurried) לָצֵ֔את (to get out), כִּ֥י (because) נִגְּע֖וֹ (had struck him) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

21  וַיְהִי֩ (And was) עֻזִּיָּ֨הוּ (Uzziah) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) מְצֹרָ֣ע׀ (a leper) עַד־ (until) י֣וֹם (the day) מוֹת֗וֹ (of his death), וַיֵּ֜שֶׁב (and He dwelt) בֵּ֤ית (in a house) הַחָפְשׁוּת (in isolation) מְצֹרָ֔ע (of being leprous), כִּ֥י (for) נִגְזַ֖ר (he was cut off) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH). וְיוֹתָ֤ם (And Jotham) בְּנוֹ֙ (his son was) עַל־ (over) בֵּ֣ית (the house) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king), שׁוֹפֵ֖ט (judging) אֶת־ (-) עַ֥ם (the people) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

22  וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֣י (of the acts) עֻזִּיָּ֔הוּ (of Uzziah), הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים (from the first) וְהָאֲחֲרֹנִ֑ים (and to the last), כָּתַ֛ב (wrote) יְשַֽׁעְיָ֥הוּ (Isaiah) בֶן־ (son) אָמ֖וֹץ (of Amoz) הַנָּבִֽיא׃ (the prophet). 23  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֨ב (And rested) עֻזִּיָּ֜הוּ (Uzziah) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֗יו (his fathers), וַיִּקְבְּר֨וּ (and they buried) אֹת֤וֹ (him) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָיו֙ (his fathers) בִּשְׂדֵ֤ה (in the field) הַקְּבוּרָה֙ (of burial) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) לַמְּלָכִ֔ים (unto the kings). כִּ֥י (For) אָמְר֖וּ (they said), מְצוֹרָ֣ע (A leper) ה֑וּא (He was). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) יוֹתָ֥ם (Jotham) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).
