Drive Out the Nations

1  כִּ֤י (When) יְבִֽיאֲךָ֙ (brings you) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אַתָּ֥ה (you) בָא־ (are going in) שָׁ֖מָּה (there) לְרִשְׁתָּ֑הּ (to possess), וְנָשַׁ֣ל (and He has cast out) גּֽוֹיִם־ (nations) רַבִּ֣ים׀ (many) מִפָּנֶ֡יךָ (before you)— הַֽחִתִּי֩ (the Hittite), וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֨י (and the Girgashite), וְהָאֱמֹרִ֜י (and the Amorite), וְהַכְּנַעֲנִ֣י (and the Canaanite), וְהַפְּרִזִּ֗י (and the Perizzite), וְהַֽחִוִּי֙ (and the Hivite), וְהַיְבוּסִ֔י (and the Jebusite), שִׁבְעָ֣ה (seven) גוֹיִ֔ם (nations) רַבִּ֥ים (greater) וַעֲצוּמִ֖ים (and mightier) מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ (than you)— 2  וּנְתָנָ֞ם (and delivers them) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ (your God) לְפָנֶ֖יךָ (over to you), וְהִכִּיתָ֑ם (then you shall strike them down)— הַחֲרֵ֤ם (devoting) תַּחֲרִים֙ (you must devote to destruction) אֹתָ֔ם (them). לֹא־ (Not) תִכְרֹ֥ת (you shall make) לָהֶ֛ם (with them) בְּרִ֖ית (a covenant) וְלֹ֥א (and not) תְחָנֵּֽם׃ (you shall show mercy to them).

3  וְלֹ֥א (And not) תִתְחַתֵּ֖ן (shall you join in marriage) בָּ֑ם (with them) בִּתְּךָ֙ (your daughter); לֹא־ (not) תִתֵּ֣ן (you shall give) לִבְנ֔וֹ (to their son), וּבִתּ֖וֹ (and their daughter) לֹא־ (not) תִקַּ֥ח (you shall take) לִבְנֶֽךָ׃ (for your son). 4  כִּֽי־ (For) יָסִ֤יר (they will turn away) אֶת־ (-) בִּנְךָ֙ (your sons) מֵֽאַחֲרַ֔י (from following Me) וְעָבְד֖וּ (and they will serve) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֑ים (other); וְחָרָ֤ה (and will be kindled) אַף־ (the anger) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) בָּכֶ֔ם (against you⁺), וְהִשְׁמִידְךָ֖ (and He will destroy you) מַהֵֽר׃ (swiftly).

5  כִּֽי־ (But) אִם־ (rather) כֹּ֤ה (thus) תַעֲשׂוּ֙ (you⁺ shall deal) לָהֶ֔ם (with them): מִזְבְּחֹתֵיהֶ֣ם (Their altars) תִּתֹּ֔צוּ (you⁺ shall break down), וּמַצֵּבֹתָ֖ם (and their pillars) תְּשַׁבֵּ֑רוּ (you⁺ shall smash) וַאֲשֵֽׁירֵהֶם֙ (and their Asherah poles) תְּגַדֵּע֔וּן (you⁺ shall cut down), וּפְסִילֵיהֶ֖ם (and their carved images) תִּשְׂרְפ֥וּן (you⁺ shall burn) בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ (with the fire). 6  כִּ֣י (For) עַ֤ם (a people) קָדוֹשׁ֙ (holy) אַתָּ֔ה (you are) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God); בְּךָ֞ (you) בָּחַ֣ר׀ (has decided) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ (your God), לִהְי֥וֹת (to be) לוֹ֙ (for Himself) לְעַ֣ם (a people), סְגֻלָּ֔ה (a special treasure), מִכֹּל֙ (above all) הָֽעַמִּ֔ים (the peoples) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ס (of the earth).

7  לֹ֣א (Not) מֵֽרֻבְּכֶ֞ם (because you⁺ were more numerous) מִכָּל־ (than any other) הָֽעַמִּ֗ים (of the peoples) חָשַׁ֧ק (did set His love) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בָּכֶ֖ם (on you⁺) וַיִּבְחַ֣ר (and choose) בָּכֶ֑ם (you⁺); כִּֽי־ (for) אַתֶּ֥ם (you⁺ were) הַמְעַ֖ט (the least) מִכָּל־ (of all) הָעַמִּֽים׃ (the peoples), 8  כִּי֩ (but it is) מֵֽאַהֲבַ֨ת (from the love) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH) אֶתְכֶ֗ם (for you⁺) וּמִשָּׁמְר֤וּ (and from His keeping of) אֶת־ (-) הַשְּׁבֻעָה֙ (the oath) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) נִשְׁבַּע֙ (He swore) לַאֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (to your⁺ fathers), הוֹצִ֧יא (that has brought out) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) בְּיָ֣ד (with a hand) חֲזָקָ֑ה (mighty) וַֽיִּפְדְּךָ֙ (and redeemed you) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) עֲבָדִ֔ים (of slavery), מִיַּ֖ד (from the hand) פַּרְעֹ֥ה (of Pharaoh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

9  וְיָ֣דַעְתָּ֔ (And you shall know) כִּֽי־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God), ה֣וּא (He) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים (is God), הָאֵל֙ (the God) הַֽנֶּאֱמָ֔ן (faithful) שֹׁמֵ֧ר (keeping) הַבְּרִ֣ית (the covenant) וְהַחֶ֗סֶד (of loving devotion) לְאֹהֲבָ֛יו (for those loving Him) וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י (and keeping) מִצְוֹתוֹ (His commandments) לְאֶ֥לֶף (for a thousand) דּֽוֹר׃ (generations). 10  וּמְשַׁלֵּ֧ם (And He repays) לְשֹׂנְאָ֛יו (those who hate Him) אֶל־ (to) פָּנָ֖יו (their faces) לְהַאֲבִיד֑וֹ (to destroy them). לֹ֤א (Not) יְאַחֵר֙ (He delays) לְשֹׂ֣נְא֔וֹ (to him who hates Him)— אֶל־ (to) פָּנָ֖יו (his face) יְשַׁלֶּם־ (He will repay) לֽוֹ׃ (him).

11  וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֨ (And you shall keep) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּצְוָ֜ה (the commandment) וְאֶת־ (and) הַֽחֻקִּ֣ים (the statutes) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֗ים (the ordinances) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אָנֹכִ֧י (I) מְצַוְּךָ֛ (command you) הַיּ֖וֹם (today), לַעֲשׂוֹתָֽם׃פ (to do them.).

12  וְהָיָ֣ה׀ (And it shall come to pass), עֵ֣קֶב (because) תִּשְׁמְע֗וּן (you⁺ listen) אֵ֤ת (-) הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים֙ (to the ordinances) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם (and keep) וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם (and do) אֹתָ֑ם (them), וְשָׁמַר֩ (that will keep) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God) לְךָ֗ (with you) אֶֽת־ (-) הַבְּרִית֙ (the covenant) וְאֶת־ (and) הַחֶ֔סֶד (the loving devotion) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נִשְׁבַּ֖ע (He swore) לַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (to your fathers). 13  וַאֲהֵ֣בְךָ֔ (And He has loved you) וּבֵרַכְךָ֖ (and blessed you) וְהִרְבֶּ֑ךָ (and multiplied you), וּבֵרַ֣ךְ (and He has blessed) פְּרִֽי־ (the fruit) בִטְנְךָ֣ (of your womb) וּפְרִֽי־ (and the fruit) אַ֠דְמָתֶךָ (of your land), דְּגָ֨נְךָ֜ (your grain) וְתִֽירֹשְׁךָ֣ (and your new wine), וְיִצְהָרֶ֗ךָ (and your oil), שְׁגַר־ (the increase) אֲלָפֶ֙יךָ֙ (of your cattle), וְעַשְׁתְּרֹ֣ת (and the offspring) צֹאנֶ֔ךָ (of your flock) עַ֚ל (in) הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נִשְׁבַּ֥ע (He swore) לַאֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ (to your fathers) לָ֥תֶת (to give) לָֽךְ׃ (to you.). 14  בָּר֥וּךְ (Blessed) תִּֽהְיֶ֖ה (you shall be) מִכָּל־ (above all) הָעַמִּ֑ים (peoples); לֹא־ (not) יִהְיֶ֥ה (there shall be) בְךָ֛ (among you) עָקָ֥ר (a barren man) וַֽעֲקָרָ֖ה (or barren woman)— וּבִבְהֶמְתֶּֽךָ׃ (or among your livestock).

15  וְהֵסִ֧יר (And has taken away) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) מִמְּךָ֖ (from you) כָּל־ (all) חֹ֑לִי (sickness). וְכָל־ (And all) מַדְוֵי֩ (diseases) מִצְרַ֨יִם (of Egypt) הָרָעִ֜ים (the terrible) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יָדַ֗עְתָּ (you have known), לֹ֤א (not) יְשִׂימָם֙ (does He put) בָּ֔ךְ (on you) וּנְתָנָ֖ם (and He has put them) בְּכָל־ (on all) שֹׂנְאֶֽיךָ׃ (those hating you). 16  וְאָכַלְתָּ֣ (And you shall destroy) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָֽעַמִּ֗ים (the peoples) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) נֹתֵ֣ן (will deliver over) לָ֔ךְ (to you). לֹא־ (Not) תָחֹ֥ס (shall have pity) עֵֽינְךָ֖ (your eye) עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (on them), וְלֹ֤א (and not) תַעֲבֹד֙ (shall you serve) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם (their gods), כִּֽי־ (for) מוֹקֵ֥שׁ (a snare) ה֖וּא (it is) לָֽךְ׃ס (to you).

17  כִּ֤י (If) תֹאמַר֙ (you should say) בִּלְבָ֣בְךָ֔ (in your heart), רַבִּ֛ים (Are greater) הַגּוֹיִ֥ם (the nations) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) מִמֶּ֑נִּי (than I); אֵיכָ֥ה (how) אוּכַ֖ל (can I) לְהוֹרִישָֽׁם׃ (dispossess them)? 18  לֹ֥א (Not) תִירָ֖א (you shall be afraid) מֵהֶ֑ם (of them); זָכֹ֣ר (remembering) תִּזְכֹּ֗ר (you must remember) אֵ֤ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) עָשָׂה֙ (did) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) לְפַרְעֹ֖ה (to Pharaoh) וּלְכָל־ (and to all) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (Egypt): 19  הַמַּסֹּ֨ת (The trials) הַגְּדֹלֹ֜ת (great) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) רָא֣וּ (saw) עֵינֶ֗יךָ (your eyes), וְהָאֹתֹ֤ת (and the signs), וְהַמֹּֽפְתִים֙ (and the wonders), וְהַיָּ֤ד (and the hand) הַחֲזָקָה֙ (mighty) וְהַזְּרֹ֣עַ (and the arm) הַנְּטוּיָ֔ה (outstretched) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (by which) הוֹצִֽאֲךָ֖ (brought you out) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God). כֵּֽן־ (So) יַעֲשֶׂ֞ה (shall do) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) לְכָל־ (to all) הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים (the peoples) אֲשֶׁר־ (of whom) אַתָּ֥ה (you) יָרֵ֖א (are afraid) מִפְּנֵיהֶֽם׃ (before their faces).

20  וְגַם֙ (Moreover) אֶת־ (-) הַצִּרְעָ֔ה (the hornet) יְשַׁלַּ֛ח (will send) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) בָּ֑ם (among them), עַד־ (until) אֲבֹ֗ד (have perished) הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֛ים (those who are left) וְהַנִּסְתָּרִ֖ים (and who hide themselves) מִפָּנֶֽיךָ׃ (from you). 21  לֹ֥א (Not) תַעֲרֹ֖ץ (you shall be terrified) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם (of them), כִּֽי־ (for) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God is) בְּקִרְבֶּ֔ךָ (among you)— אֵ֥ל (a God) גָּד֖וֹל (great) וְנוֹרָֽא׃ (and awesome).

22  וְנָשַׁל֩ (And has cast out) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God) אֶת־ (-) הַגּוֹיִ֥ם (the nations) הָאֵ֛ל (these) מִפָּנֶ֖יךָ (before you) מְעַ֣ט (little by) מְעָ֑ט (little); לֹ֤א (not) תוּכַל֙ (you are able to destroy) כַּלֹּתָ֣ם (them) מַהֵ֔ר (at once), פֶּן־ (lest) תִּרְבֶּ֥ה (become too numerous) עָלֶ֖יךָ (for you) חַיַּ֥ת (the beasts) הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (of the field). 23  וּנְתָנָ֛ם (And will deliver them) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) לְפָנֶ֑יךָ (over to you) וְהָמָם֙ (and He will confuse them) מְהוּמָ֣ה (with confusion) גְדֹלָ֔ה (great), עַ֖ד (until) הִשָּׁמְדָֽם׃ (they are destroyed). 24  וְנָתַ֤ן (And He will deliver) מַלְכֵיהֶם֙ (their kings) בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ (into your hand), וְהַאֲבַדְתָּ֣ (and you will destroy) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמָ֔ם (their name) מִתַּ֖חַת (from under) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (the heavens); לֹֽא־ (not) יִתְיַצֵּ֥ב (shall be able to stand) אִישׁ֙ (man) בְּפָנֶ֔יךָ (against you) עַ֥ד (until) הִשְׁמִֽדְךָ֖ (you have destroyed) אֹתָֽם׃ (them).

25  פְּסִילֵ֥י (The carved images) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם (of their gods) תִּשְׂרְפ֣וּן (you⁺ shall burn) בָּאֵ֑שׁ (with the fire); לֹֽא־ (not) תַחְמֹד֩ (you shall covet) כֶּ֨סֶף (the silver) וְזָהָ֤ב (or gold) עֲלֵיהֶם֙ (that is on them) וְלָקַחְתָּ֣ (and not take it) לָ֔ךְ (for yourselves), פֶּ֚ן (lest) תִּוָּקֵ֣שׁ (you be ensnared) בּ֔וֹ (by it); כִּ֧י (for) תוֹעֲבַ֛ת (an abomination to) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) הֽוּא׃ (it is). 26  וְלֹא־ (And not) תָבִ֤יא (shall you bring) תֽוֹעֵבָה֙ (an abomination) אֶל־ (into) בֵּיתֶ֔ךָ (your house), וְהָיִ֥יתָ (and become) חֵ֖רֶם (set apart for destruction) כָּמֹ֑הוּ (like it). שַׁקֵּ֧ץ׀ (Detesting) תְּשַׁקְּצֶ֛נּוּ (you shall detest it) וְתַעֵ֥ב׀ (and abhoring) תְּֽתַעֲבֶ֖נּוּ (you shall abhor it), כִּי־ (for) חֵ֥רֶם (is devoted to destruction) הֽוּא׃פ (it).
