Justice and Mercy

1  לֹ֥א (Not) תִשָּׂ֖א (you shall lift up) שֵׁ֣מַע (a report) שָׁ֑וְא (vain). אַל־ (Not) תָּ֤שֶׁת (do put) יָֽדְךָ֙ (your hand) עִם־ (with) רָשָׁ֔ע (the wicked) לִהְיֹ֖ת (to be) עֵ֥ד (a witness) חָמָֽס׃ס (violent).

2  לֹֽא־ (Not) תִהְיֶ֥ה (you shall) אַחֲרֵֽי־ (follow) רַבִּ֖ים (a crowd) לְרָעֹ֑ת (to do evil), וְלֹא־ (and not) תַעֲנֶ֣ה (shall you testify) עַל־ (in) רִ֗ב (a dispute) לִנְטֹ֛ת (to turn aside) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) רַבִּ֖ים (many), לְהַטֹּֽת׃ (to turn aside justice). 3  וְדָ֕ל (And to a poor man) לֹ֥א (not) תֶהְדַּ֖ר (you shall honor) בְּרִיבֽוֹ׃ס (in his dispute).

4  כִּ֣י (If) תִפְגַּ֞ע (you encounter) שׁ֧וֹר (the ox) אֹֽיִבְךָ֛ (of your enemy), א֥וֹ (or) חֲמֹר֖וֹ (his donkey) תֹּעֶ֑ה (going astray), הָשֵׁ֥ב (returning) תְּשִׁיבֶ֖נּוּ (you shall return it) לֽוֹ׃ס (to him).

5  כִּֽי־ (If) תִרְאֶ֞ה (you see) חֲמ֣וֹר (the donkey) שֹׂנַאֲךָ֗ (of one who hates you) רֹבֵץ֙ (lying) תַּ֣חַת (under) מַשָּׂא֔וֹ (its burden), וְחָדַלְתָּ֖ (and not) מֵעֲזֹ֣ב (do leave) ל֑וֹ (it); עָזֹ֥ב (helping) תַּעֲזֹ֖ב (you must help him) עִמּֽוֹ׃ס (with it).

6  לֹ֥א (Not) תַטֶּ֛ה (you shall turn aside) מִשְׁפַּ֥ט (the justice) אֶבְיֹנְךָ֖ (of your poor) בְּרִיבֽוֹ׃ (in his dispute). 7  מִדְּבַר־ (From a matter) שֶׁ֖קֶר (false) תִּרְחָ֑ק (you shall keep far), וְנָקִ֤י (and the innocent) וְצַדִּיק֙ (and righteous) אַֽל־ (not) תַּהֲרֹ֔ג (you shall kill), כִּ֥י (for) לֹא־ (not) אַצְדִּ֖יק (I will justify) רָשָֽׁע׃ (the wicked).

8  וְשֹׁ֖חַד (And bribe) לֹ֣א (not) תִקָּ֑ח (you shall take), כִּ֤י (for) הַשֹּׁ֙חַד֙ (the bribe) יְעַוֵּ֣ר (blinds) פִּקְחִ֔ים (the clear-sighted) וִֽיסַלֵּ֖ף (and perverts) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the words) צַדִּיקִֽים׃ (of the righteous).

9  וְגֵ֖ר (And a sojourner) לֹ֣א (not) תִלְחָ֑ץ (you shall oppress), וְאַתֶּ֗ם (for you⁺ yourselves) יְדַעְתֶּם֙ (know) אֶת־ (-) נֶ֣פֶשׁ (the soul) הַגֵּ֔ר (of a sojourner), כִּֽי־ (because) גֵרִ֥ים (sojourners) הֱיִיתֶ֖ם (you⁺ were) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

Sabbath Laws
(Leviticus 25:1–7; Deuteronomy 15:1–6)

10  וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (And for six) שָׁנִ֖ים (years) תִּזְרַ֣ע (you shall sow) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצֶ֑ךָ (your land) וְאָסַפְתָּ֖ (and gather) אֶת־ (-) תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃ (its produce). 11  וְהַשְּׁבִיעִ֞ת (And the seventh year) תִּשְׁמְטֶ֣נָּה (you shall let it rest) וּנְטַשְׁתָּ֗הּ (and let it lie fallow), וְאָֽכְלוּ֙ (and shall eat) אֶבְיֹנֵ֣י (the poor) עַמֶּ֔ךָ (of your people), וְיִתְרָ֕ם (and what they leave) תֹּאכַ֖ל (shall eat) חַיַּ֣ת (the beast) הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה (of the field). כֵּֽן־ (In like manner) תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה (you shall do) לְכַרְמְךָ֖ (for your vineyard) לְזֵיתֶֽךָ׃ (and for your olive grove).

12  שֵׁ֤שֶׁת (Six) יָמִים֙ (days) תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה (you shall do) מַעֲשֶׂ֔יךָ (your works), וּבַיּ֥וֹם (and on the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י (the seventh) תִּשְׁבֹּ֑ת (you shall rest), לְמַ֣עַן (so that) יָנ֗וּחַ (may rest) שֽׁוֹרְךָ֙ (your ox) וַחֲמֹרֶ֔ךָ (and your donkey), וְיִנָּפֵ֥שׁ (and may be refreshed) בֶּן־ (son) אֲמָתְךָ֖ (of your maidservant) וְהַגֵּֽר׃ (and the sojourner).

13  וּבְכֹ֛ל (And in all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אָמַ֥רְתִּי (I have said) אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) תִּשָּׁמֵ֑רוּ (take heed). וְשֵׁ֨ם (And the name) אֱלֹהִ֤ים (of gods) אֲחֵרִים֙ (other) לֹ֣א (not) תַזְכִּ֔ירוּ (you⁺ shall mention), לֹ֥א (and not) יִשָּׁמַ֖ע (let it be heard) עַל־ (on) פִּֽיךָ׃ (your mouth).

The Three Feasts of Pilgrimage
(Leviticus 23:1–3)

14  שָׁלֹ֣שׁ (Three) רְגָלִ֔ים (times) תָּחֹ֥ג (you shall keep a feast) לִ֖י (to Me) בַּשָּׁנָֽה׃ (in the year).

15  אֶת־ (-) חַ֣ג (The Feast) הַמַּצּוֹת֮ (of the Unleavened) תִּשְׁמֹר֒ (you shall keep); שִׁבְעַ֣ת (seven) יָמִים֩ (days) תֹּאכַ֨ל (you shall eat) מַצּ֜וֹת (unleavened bread) כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) צִוִּיתִ֗ךָ (I commanded you) לְמוֹעֵד֙ (at the appointed time) חֹ֣דֶשׁ (in the month) הָֽאָבִ֔יב (of Abib); כִּי־ (for) ב֖וֹ (in it) יָצָ֣אתָ (you came out) מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt). וְלֹא־ (And none) יֵרָא֥וּ (shall appear) פָנַ֖י (before My face) רֵיקָֽם׃ (empty).

16  וְחַ֤ג (And the Feast of) הַקָּצִיר֙ (the Harvest), בִּכּוּרֵ֣י (the firstfruits) מַעֲשֶׂ֔יךָ (of your labors) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּזְרַ֖ע (you sow) בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה (in the field);

וְחַ֤ג (and the Feast) הָֽאָסִף֙ (of the Ingathering) בְּצֵ֣את (at the end) הַשָּׁנָ֔ה (of the year), בְּאָסְפְּךָ֥ (when you have gathered in) אֶֽת־ (-) מַעֲשֶׂ֖יךָ (your labors) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (the field).

17  שָׁלֹ֥שׁ (Three) פְּעָמִ֖ים (times) בַּשָּׁנָ֑ה (in the year) יֵרָאֶה֙ (shall appear) כָּל־ (all) זְכ֣וּרְךָ֔ (your males) אֶל־ (before) פְּנֵ֖י (the face) הָאָדֹ֥ן׀ (of the Lord) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

18  לֹֽא־ (Not) תִזְבַּ֥ח (you shall offer) עַל־ (on) חָמֵ֖ץ (leavened bread) דַּם־ (the blood) זִבְחִ֑י (of My sacrifice), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יָלִ֥ין (shall remain) חֵֽלֶב־ (the fat) חַגִּ֖י (of My sacrifice) עַד־ (until) בֹּֽקֶר׃ (morning).

19  רֵאשִׁ֗ית (The first) בִּכּוּרֵי֙ (of the firstfruits) אַדְמָ֣תְךָ֔ (of your ground) תָּבִ֕יא (you shall bring) בֵּ֖ית (into the house) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God).

לֹֽא־ (Not) תְבַשֵּׁ֥ל (you shall boil) גְּדִ֖י (a young goat) בַּחֲלֵ֥ב (in the milk) אִמּֽוֹ׃ס (of its mother).

God’s Angel to Lead
(Deuteronomy 7:12–26)

20  הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), אָנֹכִ֜י (I) שֹׁלֵ֤חַ (am sending) מַלְאָךְ֙ (an angel) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before your face) לִשְׁמָרְךָ֖ (to guard you) בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ (on the way) וְלַהֲבִ֣יאֲךָ֔ (and to bring you) אֶל־ (to) הַמָּק֖וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הֲכִנֹֽתִי׃ (I have prepared). 21  הִשָּׁ֧מֶר (Be guarded) מִפָּנָ֛יו (from his face) וּשְׁמַ֥ע (and listen) בְּקֹל֖וֹ (to his voice); אַל־ (not) תַּמֵּ֣ר (do rebel against) בּ֑וֹ (him), כִּ֣י (for) לֹ֤א (not) יִשָּׂא֙ (he will pardon) לְפִשְׁעֲכֶ֔ם (your⁺ transgressions), כִּ֥י (for) שְׁמִ֖י (My name is) בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃ (within him).

22  כִּ֣י (But) אִם־ (if) שָׁמֹ֤עַ (listening) תִּשְׁמַע֙ (you will listen) בְּקֹל֔וֹ (to his voice) וְעָשִׂ֕יתָ (and do) כֹּ֖ל (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) אֲדַבֵּ֑ר (I speak), וְאָֽיַבְתִּי֙ (then I will be an enemy) אֶת־ (-) אֹ֣יְבֶ֔יךָ (to your enemies) וְצַרְתִּ֖י (and an adversary) אֶת־ (-) צֹרְרֶֽיךָ׃ (to your adversaries). 23  כִּֽי־ (For) יֵלֵ֣ךְ (will go) מַלְאָכִי֮ (My angel) לְפָנֶיךָ֒ (before your faces) וֶהֱבִֽיאֲךָ֗ (and bring you in) אֶל־ (to) הָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ (the Amorite), וְהַ֣חִתִּ֔י (and the Hittite), וְהַפְּרִזִּי֙ (and the Perizzite), וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (and the Canaanite), הַחִוִּ֖י (the Hivite), וְהַיְבוּסִ֑י (and the Jebusite); וְהִכְחַדְתִּֽיו׃ (and I will cut them off).

24  לֹֽא־ (Not) תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֤ה (you shall bow down) לֵאלֹֽהֵיהֶם֙ (to their gods), וְלֹ֣א (and not) תָֽעָבְדֵ֔ם (you shall serve them), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תַעֲשֶׂ֖ה (you shall do) כְּמַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶ֑ם (according to their works); כִּ֤י (for) הָרֵס֙ (demolishing) תְּהָ֣רְסֵ֔ם (you must demolish them) וְשַׁבֵּ֥ר (and breaking) תְּשַׁבֵּ֖ר (break to pieces) מַצֵּבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ (their pillars).

25  וַעֲבַדְתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺ shall serve) אֵ֚ת (-) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God), וּבֵרַ֥ךְ (and He will bless) אֶֽת־ (-) לַחְמְךָ֖ (your bread) וְאֶת־ (and) מֵימֶ֑יךָ (your water), וַהֲסִרֹתִ֥י (and I will take away) מַחֲלָ֖ה (sickness) מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃ (from among you). 26  לֹ֥א (Not) תִהְיֶ֛ה (there will be) מְשַׁכֵּלָ֥ה (one miscarrying) וַעֲקָרָ֖ה (or barren) בְּאַרְצֶ֑ךָ (in your land); אֶת־ (-) מִסְפַּ֥ר (the number) יָמֶ֖יךָ (of your days) אֲמַלֵּֽא׃ (I will fulfill).

27  אֶת־ (-) אֵֽימָתִי֙ (My terror) אֲשַׁלַּ֣ח (I will send) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before your faces), וְהַמֹּתִי֙ (and I will confuse) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֔ם (the people) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (to whom) תָּבֹ֖א (you come) בָּהֶ֑ם (in); וְנָתַתִּ֧י (and I will give) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (of all) אֹיְבֶ֛יךָ (your enemies) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you) עֹֽרֶף׃ (the neck). 28  וְשָׁלַחְתִּ֥י (And I will send) אֶת־ (-) הַצִּרְעָ֖ה (the hornet) לְפָנֶ֑יךָ (before your faces), וְגֵרְשָׁ֗ה (and it shall drive out) אֶת־ (-) הַחִוִּ֧י (the Hivite), אֶת־ (-) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י (the Canaanite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַחִתִּ֖י (the Hittite) מִלְּפָנֶֽיךָ׃ (from before your faces).

29  לֹ֧א (Not) אֲגָרְשֶׁ֛נּוּ (I will drive them out) מִפָּנֶ֖יךָ (from before your faces) בְּשָׁנָ֣ה (in year) אֶחָ֑ת (one), פֶּן־ (lest) תִּהְיֶ֤ה (become) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the land) שְׁמָמָ֔ה (desolate), וְרַבָּ֥ה (and become too numerous) עָלֶ֖יךָ (for you) חַיַּ֥ת (the beast) הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (of the field). 30  מְעַ֥ט (Little) מְעַ֛ט (by little) אֲגָרְשֶׁ֖נּוּ (I will drive them out) מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ (from before your faces), עַ֚ד (until) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תִּפְרֶ֔ה (you are fruitful) וְנָחַלְתָּ֖ (and you take possession) אֶת־ (-) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

31  וְשַׁתִּ֣י (And I will set) אֶת־ (-) גְּבֻלְךָ֗ (your border) מִיַּם־ (Sea) סוּף֙ (from the Red) וְעַד־ (and to) יָ֣ם (the Sea) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines), וּמִמִּדְבָּ֖ר (and from the wilderness) עַד־ (to) הַנָּהָ֑ר (the River). כִּ֣י׀ (For) אֶתֵּ֣ן (I will give) בְּיֶדְכֶ֗ם (into your⁺ hands) אֵ֚ת (-) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land), וְגֵרַשְׁתָּ֖מוֹ (and you shall drive them out) מִפָּנֶֽיךָ׃ (from before your faces). 32  לֹֽא־ (Not) תִכְרֹ֥ת (you shall cut) לָהֶ֛ם (with them) וְלֵאלֹֽהֵיהֶ֖ם (or with their gods) בְּרִֽית׃ (a covenant). 33  לֹ֤א (Not) יֵשְׁבוּ֙ (they shall dwell) בְּאַרְצְךָ֔ (in your land), פֶּן־ (lest) יַחֲטִ֥יאוּ (they cause to sin) אֹתְךָ֖ (you) לִ֑י (against Me). כִּ֤י (For if) תַעֲבֹד֙ (you serve) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם (their gods), כִּֽי־ (it will surely) יִהְיֶ֥ה (be) לְךָ֖ (to you) לְמוֹקֵֽשׁ׃פ (a snare).
