The Seventh Year
(Exodus 23:10–13; Deuteronomy 15:1–6)

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר (And spoke) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) בְּהַ֥ר (on Mount) סִינַ֖י (Sinai), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  דַּבֵּ֞ר (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them): כִּ֤י (When) תָבֹ֙אוּ֙ (you⁺ come) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אֲנִ֖י (I) נֹתֵ֣ן (am giving) לָכֶ֑ם (to you⁺), וְשָׁבְתָ֣ה (and shall keep) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) שַׁבָּ֖ת (a Sabbath) לַיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH).

3  שֵׁ֤שׁ (Six) שָׁנִים֙ (years) תִּזְרַ֣ע (you shall sow) שָׂדֶ֔ךָ (your field), וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) שָׁנִ֖ים (years) תִּזְמֹ֣ר (you shall prune) כַּרְמֶ֑ךָ (your vineyard) וְאָסַפְתָּ֖ (and gather) אֶת־ (-) תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃ (its fruit). 4  וּבַשָּׁנָ֣ה (And in the year) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗ת (the seventh) שַׁבַּ֤ת (a Sabbath) שַׁבָּתוֹן֙ (of complete rest) יִהְיֶ֣ה (there shall be) לָאָ֔רֶץ (for the land), שַׁבָּ֖ת (a Sabbath) לַיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH).

שָֽׂדְךָ֙ (Your field) לֹ֣א (not) תִזְרָ֔ע (you shall sow), וְכַרְמְךָ֖ (and your vineyard) לֹ֥א (not) תִזְמֹֽר׃ (prune). 5  אֵ֣ת (-) סְפִ֤יחַ (What grows of its own accord) קְצִֽירְךָ֙ (of your harvest) לֹ֣א (not) תִקְצ֔וֹר (you shall reap), וְאֶת־ (and) עִנְּבֵ֥י (the grapes) נְזִירֶ֖ךָ (of your untended vine) לֹ֣א (not) תִבְצֹ֑ר (gather). שְׁנַ֥ת (A year) שַׁבָּת֖וֹן (of complete rest) יִהְיֶ֥ה (it is) לָאָֽרֶץ׃ (for the land). 6  וְ֠הָיְתָה (And shall be) שַׁבַּ֨ת (the Sabbath) הָאָ֤רֶץ (of the land) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) לְאָכְלָ֔ה (food)— לְךָ֖ (for you) וּלְעַבְדְּךָ֣ (and for your manservant), וְלַאֲמָתֶ֑ךָ (and for your maidservant), וְלִשְׂכִֽירְךָ֙ (and for your hireling), וּלְתוֹשָׁ֣בְךָ֔ (and for your settler) הַגָּרִ֖ים (who is sojourning) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you), 7  וְלִ֨בְהֶמְתְּךָ֔ (and for your livestock), וְלַֽחַיָּ֖ה (and for the beast) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בְּאַרְצֶ֑ךָ (is in your land), תִּהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) כָל־ (all) תְּבוּאָתָ֖הּ (its produce) לֶאֱכֹֽל׃ס (for food).

The Year of Jubilee

8  וְסָפַרְתָּ֣ (And you shall count) לְךָ֗ (for yourself) שֶׁ֚בַע (seven) שַׁבְּתֹ֣ת (Sabbaths) שָׁנִ֔ים (of years)— שֶׁ֥בַע (seven) שָׁנִ֖ים (years)— שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) פְּעָמִ֑ים (times), וְהָי֣וּ (and shall be) לְךָ֗ (to you) יְמֵי֙ (the days) שֶׁ֚בַע (of seven) שַׁבְּתֹ֣ת (Sabbaths) הַשָּׁנִ֔ים (of years): תֵּ֥שַׁע (Nine) וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים (and forty) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 9  וְהַֽעֲבַרְתָּ֞ (And you shall cause to sound) שׁוֹפַ֤ר (the shofar) תְּרוּעָה֙ (of the Jubilee) בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ (in the month) הַשְּׁבִעִ֔י (seventh), בֶּעָשׂ֖וֹר (on the tenth) לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ (of the month), בְּיוֹם֙ (in the Day) הַכִּפֻּרִ֔ים (of the Atonements). תַּעֲבִ֥ירוּ (You⁺ shall make to sound) שׁוֹפָ֖ר (the shofar) בְּכָל־ (throughout all) אַרְצְכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ land).

10  וְקִדַּשְׁתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺ shall consecrate) אֵ֣ת (-) שְׁנַ֤ת (the year), הַחֲמִשִּׁים֙ (the fiftieth) שָׁנָ֔ה (year), וּקְרָאתֶ֥ם (and proclaim) דְּר֛וֹר (liberty) בָּאָ֖רֶץ (in the land) לְכָל־ (to all) יֹשְׁבֶ֑יהָ (its dwellers). יוֹבֵ֥ל (A Jubilee) הִוא֙ (it) תִּהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) לָכֶ֔ם (for you⁺), וְשַׁבְתֶּ֗ם (and shall return) אִ֚ישׁ (each of you) אֶל־ (to) אֲחֻזָּת֔וֹ (his possession), וְאִ֥ישׁ (and each of you) אֶל־ (to) מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֖וֹ (his family) תָּשֻֽׁבוּ׃ (shall return).

11  יוֹבֵ֣ל (A Jubilee) הִ֗וא (that) שְׁנַ֛ת (year), הַחֲמִשִּׁ֥ים (the fiftieth) שָׁנָ֖ה (year), תִּהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) לָכֶ֑ם (to you⁺). לֹ֣א (Not) תִזְרָ֔עוּ (you⁺ shall sow), וְלֹ֤א (and not) תִקְצְרוּ֙ (reap) אֶת־ (-) סְפִיחֶ֔יהָ (what grows of its own accord), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תִבְצְר֖וּ (gather) אֶת־ (-) נְזִרֶֽיהָ׃ (of your untended vine). 12  כִּ֚י (For) יוֹבֵ֣ל (the Jubilee) הִ֔וא (it is); קֹ֖דֶשׁ (holy) תִּהְיֶ֣ה (it shall be) לָכֶ֑ם (to you⁺). מִן־ (From) הַ֨שָּׂדֶ֔ה (the field) תֹּאכְל֖וּ (you⁺ shall eat) אֶת־ (-) תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃ (its produce).

Return of Property

13  בִּשְׁנַ֥ת (In the Year) הַיּוֹבֵ֖ל (of the Jubilee) הַזֹּ֑את (this) תָּשֻׁ֕בוּ (shall return) אִ֖ישׁ (each of you) אֶל־ (to) אֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃ (his possession).

14  וְכִֽי־ (And if) תִמְכְּר֤וּ (you⁺ sell) מִמְכָּר֙ (anything) לַעֲמִיתֶ֔ךָ (to your neighbor), א֥וֹ (or) קָנֹ֖ה (buy) מִיַּ֣ד (from the hand) עֲמִיתֶ֑ךָ (of your neighbor), אַל־ (not) תּוֹנ֖וּ (you⁺ shall oppress) אִ֥ישׁ (one) אֶת־ (-) אָחִֽיו׃ (another). 15  בְּמִסְפַּ֤ר (By the number) שָׁנִים֙ (of years) אַחַ֣ר (after) הַיּוֹבֵ֔ל (the Jubilee), תִּקְנֶ֖ה (you shall buy) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) עֲמִיתֶ֑ךָ (your neighbor), בְּמִסְפַּ֥ר (and by the number) שְׁנֵֽי־ (of years) תְבוּאֹ֖ת (of crops) יִמְכָּר־ (he shall sell) לָֽךְ׃ (to you). 16  לְפִ֣י׀ (According to) רֹ֣ב (the multitude) הַשָּׁנִ֗ים (of the years) תַּרְבֶּה֙ (you shall increase) מִקְנָת֔וֹ (its price), וּלְפִי֙ (and according to) מְעֹ֣ט (the fewness) הַשָּׁנִ֔ים (of the years) תַּמְעִ֖יט (you shall diminish) מִקְנָת֑וֹ (its price), כִּ֚י (for) מִסְפַּ֣ר (a number) תְּבוּאֹ֔ת (of crops) ה֥וּא (he) מֹכֵ֖ר (is selling) לָֽךְ׃ (to you).

17  וְלֹ֤א (And not) תוֹנוּ֙ (you⁺ shall oppress) אִ֣ישׁ (one) אֶת־ (-) עֲמִית֔וֹ (another), וְיָרֵ֖אתָ (and you shall fear) מֵֽאֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God). כִּ֛י (For) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהֹוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

The Blessing of Obedience
(Deuteronomy 28:1–14)

18  וַעֲשִׂיתֶם֙ (And you⁺ shall observe) אֶת־ (-) חֻקֹּתַ֔י (My statutes), וְאֶת־ (and) מִשְׁפָּטַ֥י (My ordinances) תִּשְׁמְר֖וּ (keep) וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם (and perform) אֹתָ֑ם (them), וִֽישַׁבְתֶּ֥ם (and you⁺ will dwell) עַל־ (in) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) לָבֶֽטַח׃ (in safety). 19  וְנָתְנָ֤ה (And will yield) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the land) פִּרְיָ֔הּ (its fruit), וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ will eat) לָשֹׂ֑בַע (your fill) וִֽישַׁבְתֶּ֥ם (and dwell) לָבֶ֖טַח (in safety) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (there).

20  וְכִ֣י (Now) תֹאמְר֔וּ (you⁺ may say), מַה־ (What) נֹּאכַ֤֖ל (shall we eat) בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה (in the year) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֑ת (seventh), הֵ֚ן (since) לֹ֣א (not) נִזְרָ֔ע (we shall sow), וְלֹ֥א (and not) נֶאֱסֹ֖ף (gather in) אֶת־ (-) תְּבוּאָתֵֽנוּ׃ (our produce)? 21  וְצִוִּ֤יתִי (And I will command) אֶת־ (-) בִּרְכָתִי֙ (My blessing) לָכֶ֔ם (on you⁺) בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה (in the year) הַשִּׁשִּׁ֑ית (sixth), וְעָשָׂת֙ (and it will bring forth enough) אֶת־ (-) הַתְּבוּאָ֔ה (produce) לִשְׁלֹ֖שׁ (for three) הַשָּׁנִֽים׃ (years). 22  וּזְרַעְתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺ shall sow) אֵ֚ת (-) הַשָּׁנָ֣ה (in the year) הַשְּׁמִינִ֔ת (eighth), וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֖ם (and eat) מִן־ (of) הַתְּבוּאָ֣ה (the produce) יָשָׁ֑ן (old) עַ֣ד׀ (until) הַשָּׁנָ֣ה (the year) הַתְּשִׁיעִ֗ת (ninth); עַד־ (until) בּוֹא֙ (comes in) תְּב֣וּאָתָ֔הּ (its produce), תֹּאכְל֖וּ (you⁺ shall eat) יָשָֽׁן׃ (of the old harvest).

The Law of Redemption

23  וְהָאָ֗רֶץ (And the land) לֹ֤א (not) תִמָּכֵר֙ (shall be sold) לִצְמִתֻ֔ת (permanently), כִּי־ (for) לִ֖י (Mine) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land is), כִּֽי־ (for) גֵרִ֧ים (sojourners) וְתוֹשָׁבִ֛ים (and settlers) אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ are) עִמָּדִֽי׃ (with Me). 24  וּבְכֹ֖ל (And in all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) אֲחֻזַּתְכֶ֑ם (of your⁺ possession), גְּאֻלָּ֖ה (redemption) תִּתְּנ֥וּ (you⁺ shall grant) לָאָֽרֶץ׃ס (of the land).

25  כִּֽי־ (If) יָמ֣וּךְ (becomes poor) אָחִ֔יךָ (one of your brothers), וּמָכַ֖ר (and he has sold some) מֵאֲחֻזָּת֑וֹ (of his possession), וּבָ֤א (and if he comes) גֹֽאֲלוֹ֙ (to redeem it), הַקָּרֹ֣ב (the redeemer) אֵלָ֔יו (to him) וְגָאַ֕ל (and he may redeem) אֵ֖ת (-) מִמְכַּ֥ר (what sold) אָחִֽיו׃ (his brother). 26  וְאִ֕ישׁ (And the man) כִּ֛י (if) לֹ֥א (not) יִֽהְיֶה־ (there is) לּ֖וֹ (unto him) גֹּאֵ֑ל (one to redeem), וְהִשִּׂ֣יגָה (and has attained) יָד֔וֹ (his own hand) וּמָצָ֖א (and he has found) כְּדֵ֥י (sufficiency) גְאֻלָּתֽוֹ׃ (for its redemption), 27  וְחִשַּׁב֙ (and let him count) אֶת־ (-) שְׁנֵ֣י (the years) מִמְכָּר֔וֹ (of its sale) וְהֵשִׁיב֙ (and restore) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣עֹדֵ֔ף (the remainder) לָאִ֖ישׁ (to the man) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (to whom) מָֽכַר־ (he sold) ל֑וֹ (it), וְשָׁ֖ב (that he may return) לַאֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃ (to his possession). 28  וְאִ֨ם (But if) לֹֽא־ (not) מָֽצְאָ֜ה (has found) יָד֗וֹ (his hand) דֵּי֮ (sufficiency) הָשִׁ֣יב (to have it restored) לוֹ֒ (to himself), וְהָיָ֣ה (and shall remain) מִמְכָּר֗וֹ (what was sold) בְּיַד֙ (in the hand) הַקֹּנֶ֣ה (of him who bought) אֹת֔וֹ (it) עַ֖ד (until) שְׁנַ֣ת (the Year) הַיּוֹבֵ֑ל (of the Jubilee). וְיָצָא֙ (And it shall be released) בַּיֹּבֵ֔ל (in the Jubilee), וְשָׁ֖ב (and he shall return) לַאֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃ (to his possession).

29  וְאִ֗ישׁ (And a man) כִּֽי־ (if) יִמְכֹּ֤ר (he sells) בֵּית־ (a house), מוֹשַׁב֙ (dwelling) עִ֣יר (in a city) חוֹמָ֔ה (walled), וְהָיְתָה֙ (then it shall be) גְּאֻלָּת֔וֹ (that he may redeem it) עַד־ (within) תֹּ֖ם (the completion) שְׁנַ֣ת (of a year) מִמְכָּר֑וֹ (from its selling); יָמִ֖ים (during that year) תִּהְיֶ֥ה (it may be) גְאֻלָּתֽוֹ׃ (redeemed). 30  וְאִ֣ם (But if) לֹֽא־ (not) יִגָּאֵ֗ל (it is redeemed) עַד־ (within) מְלֹ֣את (the filling) לוֹ֮ (for it) שָׁנָ֣ה (of a year) תְמִימָה֒ (full), וְ֠קָם (and shall belong) הַבַּ֨יִת (the house) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּעִ֜יר (the city) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) לֹא (within) חֹמָ֗ה (walled) לַצְּמִיתֻ֛ת (forever) לַקֹּנֶ֥ה (to the buyer) אֹת֖וֹ (of it) לְדֹרֹתָ֑יו (throughout his generations); לֹ֥א (not) יֵצֵ֖א (it shall be released) בַּיֹּבֵֽל׃ (in the Jubilee). 31  וּבָתֵּ֣י (And the houses) הַחֲצֵרִ֗ים (of the villages) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אֵין־ (have no) לָהֶ֤ם (-) חֹמָה֙ (wall) סָבִ֔יב (around them), עַל־ (as) שְׂדֵ֥ה (the fields) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the country), יֵחָשֵׁ֑ב (shall be counted) גְּאֻלָּה֙ (redeemed); תִּהְיֶה־ (they may be) לּ֔וֹ (unto it), וּבַיֹּבֵ֖ל (and in the Jubilee) יֵצֵֽא׃ (they shall be released).

32  וְעָרֵי֙ (And as for the cities) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (of the Levites), בָּתֵּ֖י (the houses) עָרֵ֣י (in the cities) אֲחֻזָּתָ֑ם (of their possession) גְּאֻלַּ֥ת (a redemption of) עוֹלָ֖ם (perpetuity) תִּהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) לַלְוִיִּֽם׃ (the Levites). 33  וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (And as to him who) יִגְאַל֙ (redeems) מִן־ (from) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites), וְיָצָ֧א (and shall be released) מִמְכַּר־ (both the sale) בַּ֛יִת (of a house) וְעִ֥יר (and the city) אֲחֻזָּת֖וֹ (of his possession) בַּיֹּבֵ֑ל (in the Jubilee). כִּ֣י (For) בָתֵּ֞י (the houses in) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) הַלְוִיִּ֗ם (of the Levites) הִ֚וא (are) אֲחֻזָּתָ֔ם (their possession) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 34  וּֽשְׂדֵ֛ה (And the field) מִגְרַ֥שׁ (of the pastureland) עָרֵיהֶ֖ם (of their cities) לֹ֣א (not) יִמָּכֵ֑ר (may be sold), כִּֽי־ (for) אֲחֻזַּ֥ת (possession) עוֹלָ֛ם (an everlasting) ה֖וּא (it is) לָהֶֽם׃ס (to them).

Redemption of the Poor

35  וְכִֽי־ (And if) יָמ֣וּךְ (becomes poor) אָחִ֔יךָ (one of your brothers) וּמָ֥טָה (and has failed) יָד֖וֹ (his hand), עִמָּ֑ךְ (among you) וְהֶֽחֱזַ֣קְתָּ (and you shall help) בּ֔וֹ (him) גֵּ֧ר (like a sojourner) וְתוֹשָׁ֛ב (or a settler), וָחַ֖י (and he may live) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you). 36  אַל־ (Not) תִּקַּ֤ח (shall you take) מֵֽאִתּוֹ֙ (from him) נֶ֣שֶׁךְ (usury) וְתַרְבִּ֔ית (or interest), וְיָרֵ֖אתָ (and you shall fear) מֵֽאֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God), וְחֵ֥י (that may live) אָחִ֖יךָ (your brother) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you). 37  אֶ֨ת־ (-) כַּסְפְּךָ֔ (your silver) לֹֽא־ (not) תִתֵּ֥ן (you shall lend) ל֖וֹ (to him) בְּנֶ֑שֶׁךְ (for usury) וּבְמַרְבִּ֖ית (and at a profit), לֹא־ (and not) תִתֵּ֥ן (sell him) אָכְלֶֽךָ׃ (your food). 38  אֲנִ֗י (I am) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הוֹצֵ֥אתִי (brought you) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (-) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (out of the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt) לָתֵ֤ת (to give) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan) לִהְי֥וֹת (and to be) לָכֶ֖ם (your⁺) לֵאלֹהִֽים׃ס (God).

Redemption of Bondmen

39  וְכִֽי־ (And if) יָמ֥וּךְ (becomes poor) אָחִ֛יךָ (one of your brothers) עִמָּ֖ךְ (among you), וְנִמְכַּר־ (and he sells himself) לָ֑ךְ (to you), לֹא־ (not) תַעֲבֹ֥ד (you shall compel) בּ֖וֹ (him) עֲבֹ֥דַת (to serve) עָֽבֶד׃ (as a slave). 40  כְּשָׂכִ֥יר (Like a hireling) כְּתוֹשָׁ֖ב (like a settler) יִהְיֶ֣ה (he shall be) עִמָּ֑ךְ (with you); עַד־ (until) שְׁנַ֥ת (the Year) הַיֹּבֵ֖ל (of the Jubilee) יַעֲבֹ֥ד (he shall serve) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (you). 41  וְיָצָא֙ (And shall depart) מֵֽעִמָּ֔ךְ (from you) ה֖וּא (he) וּבָנָ֣יו (and his children) עִמּ֑וֹ (with him), וְשָׁב֙ (and shall return) אֶל־ (to) מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֔וֹ (his own family), וְאֶל־ (and to) אֲחֻזַּ֥ת (the possession) אֲבֹתָ֖יו (of his fathers) יָשֽׁוּב׃ (he shall return).

42  כִּֽי־ (For) עֲבָדַ֣י (My servants) הֵ֔ם (they are), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הוֹצֵ֥אתִי (I brought) אֹתָ֖ם (-) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (out of the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt); לֹ֥א (not) יִמָּכְר֖וּ (they shall be sold) מִמְכֶּ֥רֶת (as) עָֽבֶד׃ (slaves). 43  לֹא־ (Not) תִרְדֶּ֥ה (you shall rule) ב֖וֹ (over him) בְּפָ֑רֶךְ (with rigor), וְיָרֵ֖אתָ (and you shall fear) מֵאֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God).

44  וְעַבְדְּךָ֥ (And your manservant) וַאֲמָתְךָ֖ (and your maidservant) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) יִהְיוּ־ (may have) לָ֑ךְ (you) מֵאֵ֣ת (are from) הַגּוֹיִ֗ם (the nations) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) סְבִיבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (are around you⁺); מֵהֶ֥ם (from them) תִּקְנ֖וּ (you⁺ may buy) עֶ֥בֶד (manservant) וְאָמָֽה׃ (and maidservant). 45  וְ֠גַם (Moreover) מִבְּנֵ֨י (the sons) הַתּוֹשָׁבִ֜ים (of the settlers) הַגָּרִ֤ים (who are sojourning) עִמָּכֶם֙ (among you⁺), מֵהֶ֣ם (these) תִּקְנ֔וּ (you⁺ may buy), וּמִמִּשְׁפַּחְתָּם֙ (and their clans) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who are) עִמָּכֶ֔ם (with you⁺) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הוֹלִ֖ידוּ (they beget) בְּאַרְצְכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ land); וְהָי֥וּ (and they shall be) לָכֶ֖ם (unto you⁺) לַֽאֲחֻזָּֽה׃ (for a possession). 46  וְהִתְנַחֲלְתֶּ֨ם (And you⁺ may take as an inheritance) אֹתָ֜ם (them) לִבְנֵיכֶ֤ם (for your⁺ children) אַחֲרֵיכֶם֙ (after you⁺) לָרֶ֣שֶׁת (to inherit them) אֲחֻזָּ֔ה (as a possession) לְעֹלָ֖ם (forever); בָּהֶ֣ם (in them) תַּעֲבֹ֑דוּ (shall be your⁺ slaves). וּבְאַ֨חֵיכֶ֤ם (And regarding your⁺ brothers), בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), אִ֣ישׁ (one) בְּאָחִ֔יו (over another) לֹא־ (not) תִרְדֶּ֥ה (you shall rule) ב֖וֹ (with) בְּפָֽרֶךְ׃ס (rigor).

Redemption of Servants

47  וְכִ֣י (And if) תַשִּׂ֗יג (becomes rich) יַ֣ד (-) גֵּ֤ר (a sojourner) וְתוֹשָׁב֙ (or settler) עִמָּ֔ךְ (among you), וּמָ֥ךְ (and becomes poor) אָחִ֖יךָ (one of your brothers) עִמּ֑וֹ (by him) וְנִמְכַּ֗ר (and sells himself) לְגֵ֤ר (to the sojourner) תּוֹשָׁב֙ (or settler) עִמָּ֔ךְ (among you), א֥וֹ (or) לְעֵ֖קֶר (to a member) מִשְׁפַּ֥חַת (of the family of) גֵּֽר׃ (a sojourner), 48  אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) נִמְכַּ֔ר (he is sold), גְּאֻלָּ֖ה (the right of redemption) תִּהְיֶה־ (there is) לּ֑וֹ (unto him). אֶחָ֥ד (One) מֵאֶחָ֖יו (of his brothers) יִגְאָלֶֽנּוּ׃ (may redeem him). 49  אוֹ־ (Or) דֹד֞וֹ (his uncle) א֤וֹ (or) בֶן־ (a son) דֹּדוֹ֙ (of his uncle) יִגְאָלֶ֔נּוּ (may redeem him), אֽוֹ־ (or someone) מִשְּׁאֵ֧ר (from a close relative) בְּשָׂר֛וֹ (of his flesh) מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתּ֖וֹ (from his family) יִגְאָלֶ֑נּוּ (may redeem him), אֽוֹ־ (or if) הִשִּׂ֥יגָה (has attained) יָד֖וֹ (his own hand), וְנִגְאָֽל׃ (then he may redeem himself).

50  וְחִשַּׁב֙ (And he shall reckon) עִם־ (with) קֹנֵ֔הוּ (him who bought him) מִשְּׁנַת֙ (from the year) הִמָּ֣כְרוֹ (that he was sold) ל֔וֹ (to him), עַ֖ד (until) שְׁנַ֣ת (the Year) הַיֹּבֵ֑ל (of the Jubilee). וְהָיָ֞ה (And shall be) כֶּ֤סֶף (the price) מִמְכָּרוֹ֙ (of his release) בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (according to the number) שָׁנִ֔ים (of years); כִּימֵ֥י (according to the time) שָׂכִ֖יר (of a hireling) יִהְיֶ֥ה (it is) עִמּֽוֹ׃ (for him). 51  אִם־ (If) ע֥וֹד (yet) רַבּ֖וֹת (many) בַּשָּׁנִ֑ים (are years) לְפִיהֶן֙ (according to them), יָשִׁ֣יב (he shall repay) גְּאֻלָּת֔וֹ (the price of his redemption) מִכֶּ֖סֶף (from the silver) מִקְנָתֽוֹ׃ (with which he was bought). 52  וְאִם־ (And if) מְעַ֞ט (but a few) נִשְׁאַ֧ר (remain) בַּשָּׁנִ֛ים (years) עַד־ (until) שְׁנַ֥ת (the Year) הַיֹּבֵ֖ל (of the Jubilee), וְחִשַּׁב־ (and he shall reckon) ל֑וֹ (with him) כְּפִ֣י (according to) שָׁנָ֔יו (his years); יָשִׁ֖יב (he shall repay him) אֶת־ (-) גְּאֻלָּתֽוֹ׃ (the price of his redemption). 53  כִּשְׂכִ֥יר (As a hireling) שָׁנָ֛ה (year) בְּשָׁנָ֖ה (by year) יִהְיֶ֣ה (he shall be) עִמּ֑וֹ (with him). לֹֽא־ (Not) יִרְדֶּ֥נּֽוּ (he shall rule over him) בְּפֶ֖רֶךְ (with rigor) לְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ (in your eyes).

54  וְאִם־ (And if) לֹ֥א (not) יִגָּאֵ֖ל (he is redeemed) בְּאֵ֑לֶּה (in these years), וְיָצָא֙ (and he shall be released) בִּשְׁנַ֣ת (in the Year) הַיֹּבֵ֔ל (of the Jubilee)— ה֖וּא (he) וּבָנָ֥יו (and his children) עִמּֽוֹ׃ (with him). 55  כִּֽי־ (For) לִ֤י (to Me) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) עֲבָדִ֔ים (are servants). עֲבָדַ֣י (My servants) הֵ֔ם (they are), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הוֹצֵ֥אתִי (I brought) אוֹתָ֖ם (-) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (out of the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).
