The Seventh Year
(Exodus 23:10–13; Leviticus 25:1–7)

1 מִקֵּ֥ץ (At the end) שֶֽׁבַע־ (of seven) שָׁנִ֖ים (years) תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה (you shall grant) שְׁמִטָּֽה׃ (a release).

2 וְזֶה֮ (And this is) דְּבַ֣ר (the form) הַשְּׁמִטָּה֒ (of the release): שָׁמ֗וֹט (Shall release) כָּל־ (every) בַּ֙עַל֙ (owner) מַשֵּׁ֣ה (of a loan) יָד֔וֹ (his hand) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (of that) יַשֶּׁ֖ה (he has lent) בְּרֵעֵ֑הוּ (to his neighbor); לֹֽא־ (not) יִגֹּ֤שׂ (he shall require it) אֶת־ (-) רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ (of his neighbor) וְאֶת־ (or) אָחִ֔יו (his brother), כִּֽי־ (because) קָרָ֥א (it is called) שְׁמִטָּ֖ה (a release) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (unto YHWH).

3 אֶת־ (-) הַנָּכְרִ֖י (of a foreigner) תִּגֹּ֑שׂ (you may require it), וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר (and to that which) יִהְיֶ֥ה (is) לְךָ֛ (owed) אֶת־ (by) אָחִ֖יךָ (your brother) תַּשְׁמֵ֥ט (shall release) יָדֶֽךָ׃ (your hand).

4 אֶ֕פֶס (The end is), כִּ֛י (however), לֹ֥א (that not) יִֽהְיֶה־ (there shall be) בְּךָ֖ (among you) אֶבְי֑וֹן (poor), כִּֽי־ (for) בָרֵ֤ךְ (blessing) יְבָֽרֶכְךָ֙ (will bless you) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) בָּאָ֕רֶץ (in the land) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) נֹֽתֵן־ (is giving) לְךָ֥ (you) נַחֲלָ֖ה (as an inheritance) לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ (to possess).

5 רַ֚ק (Only) אִם־ (if) שָׁמ֣וֹעַ (listening) תִּשְׁמַ֔ע (you listen) בְּק֖וֹל (to the voice) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God), לִשְׁמֹ֤ר (with care) לַעֲשׂוֹת֙ (to observe) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַמִּצְוָ֣ה (the command) הַזֹּ֔את (this) אֲשֶׁ֛ר (that) אָנֹכִ֥י (I) מְצַוְּךָ֖ (command you) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today).

6 כִּֽי־ (For) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) בֵּֽרַכְךָ֔ (will bless you) כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּר־ (He has spoken) לָ֑ךְ (to you), וְהַֽעֲבַטְתָּ֞ (and you shall lend to) גּוֹיִ֣ם (nations) רַבִּ֗ים (many), וְאַתָּה֙ (and you) לֹ֣א (not) תַעֲבֹ֔ט (shall borrow); וּמָֽשַׁלְתָּ֙ (and you shall reign) בְּגוֹיִ֣ם (over nations) רַבִּ֔ים (many), וּבְךָ֖ (and over you) לֹ֥א (not) יִמְשֹֽׁלוּ׃ס (they shall reign).

Generosity in Lending and Giving
(Matthew 6:1–4)

7 כִּֽי־ (If) יִהְיֶה֩ (there is) בְךָ֨ (among you) אֶבְי֜וֹן (a poor man) מֵאַחַ֤ד (of one) אַחֶ֙יךָ֙ (of your brothers) בְּאַחַ֣ד (within one) שְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ (of the gates) בְּאַ֨רְצְךָ֔ (in your land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֣ן (is giving) לָ֑ךְ (to you), לֹ֧א (not) תְאַמֵּ֣ץ (you shall strengthen) אֶת־ (-) לְבָבְךָ֗ (your heart) וְלֹ֤א (and not) תִקְפֹּץ֙ (shut) אֶת־ (-) יָ֣דְךָ֔ (your hand) מֵאָחִ֖יךָ (from your brother) הָאֶבְיֽוֹן׃ (poor).

8 כִּֽי־ (But) פָתֹ֧חַ (opening) תִּפְתַּ֛ח (you shall open) אֶת־ (-) יָדְךָ֖ (your hand) ל֑וֹ (to him), וְהַעֲבֵט֙ (and loaning) תַּעֲבִיטֶ֔נּוּ (you shall loan him) דֵּ֚י (what is sufficient) מַחְסֹר֔וֹ (for his need), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whatever) יֶחְסַ֖ר (is lacking) לֽוֹ׃ (unto him).

9 הִשָּׁ֣מֶר (Beware) לְךָ֡ (for yourself), פֶּן־ (lest) יִהְיֶ֣ה (there be) דָבָר֩ (a thought) עִם־ (in) לְבָבְךָ֨ (your heart) בְלִיַּ֜עַל (wicked), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), קָֽרְבָ֣ה (Is near) שְׁנַֽת־ (year) הַשֶּׁבַע֮ (the seventh), שְׁנַ֣ת (year) הַשְּׁמִטָּה֒ (of the release), וְרָעָ֣ה (and is evil) עֵֽינְךָ֗ (your eye) בְּאָחִ֙יךָ֙ (against your brother) הָֽאֶבְי֔וֹן (poor), וְלֹ֥א (and nothing) תִתֵּ֖ן (you give) ל֑וֹ (to him), וְקָרָ֤א (and he cries out) עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ (against you) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וְהָיָ֥ה (and it becomes) בְךָ֖ (among you) חֵֽטְא׃ (sin).

10 נָת֤וֹן (Giving) תִּתֵּן֙ (you shall give) ל֔וֹ (to him), וְלֹא־ (and not) יֵרַ֥ע (should be grieved) לְבָבְךָ֖ (your heart) בְּתִתְּךָ֣ (when you give) ל֑וֹ (to him), כִּ֞י (because) בִּגְלַ֣ל׀ (for) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֗ה (this) יְבָרֶכְךָ֙ (will bless you) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) בְּכָֽל־ (in all) מַעֲשֶׂ֔ךָ (your works) וּבְכֹ֖ל (and in all) מִשְׁלַ֥ח (the sending out) יָדֶֽךָ׃ (of your hand).

11 כִּ֛י (For) לֹא־ (never) יֶחְדַּ֥ל (will cease) אֶבְי֖וֹן (the poor) מִקֶּ֣רֶב (from the midst) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land); עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֞ן (thus) אָנֹכִ֤י (I) מְצַוְּךָ֙ (command you) לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying that) פָּ֠תֹחַ (opening) תִּפְתַּ֨ח (you shall open) אֶת־ (-) יָדְךָ֜ (your hand) לְאָחִ֧יךָ (to your brother), לַעֲנִיֶּ֛ךָ (to your poor), וּלְאֶבְיֹנְךָ֖ (and to your needy) בְּאַרְצֶֽךָ׃ס (in your land).

Hebrew Servants
(Exodus 21:1–11)

12 כִּֽי־ (If) יִמָּכֵ֨ר (is sold) לְךָ֜ (to you) אָחִ֣יךָ (your brother), הָֽעִבְרִ֗י (a Hebrew) א֚וֹ (or) הָֽעִבְרִיָּ֔ה (a Hebrewess), וַעֲבָֽדְךָ֖ (and he has served you) שֵׁ֣שׁ (six) שָׁנִ֑ים (years), וּבַשָּׁנָה֙ (and in the year) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔ת (seventh) תְּשַׁלְּחֶ֥נּוּ (you shall let him go) חָפְשִׁ֖י (free) מֵעִמָּֽךְ׃ (from you).

13 וְכִֽי־ (And when) תְשַׁלְּחֶ֥נּוּ (you send him away) חָפְשִׁ֖י (free) מֵֽעִמָּ֑ךְ (from you), לֹ֥א (not) תְשַׁלְּחֶ֖נּוּ (you must send him) רֵיקָֽם׃ (emptily).

14 הַעֲנֵ֤יק (Furnishing) תַּעֲנִיק֙ (you shall furnish) ל֔וֹ (him) מִצֹּ֣אנְךָ֔ (from your flock), וּמִֽגָּרְנְךָ֖ (and from your threshing floor), וּמִיִּקְבֶ֑ךָ (and from your winepress); אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that which) בֵּרַכְךָ֛ (has blessed you with) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God), תִּתֶּן־ (you shall give) לֽוֹ׃ (to him).

15 וְזָכַרְתָּ֗ (And you shall remember) כִּ֣י (that) עֶ֤בֶד (a slave) הָיִ֙יתָ֙ (you were) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), וַֽיִּפְדְּךָ֖ (and redeemed you) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֞ן (thus) אָנֹכִ֧י (I) מְצַוְּךָ֛ (command you) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֥ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today).

16 וְהָיָה֙ (And it shall come to pass that) כִּֽי־ (if) יֹאמַ֣ר (he says) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you), לֹ֥א (Not) אֵצֵ֖א (I will go away) מֵעִמָּ֑ךְ (from you), כִּ֤י (because) אֲהֵֽבְךָ֙ (he loves you) וְאֶת־ (and) בֵּיתֶ֔ךָ (your house), כִּי־ (since) ט֥וֹב (it is good) ל֖וֹ (to him) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you),

17 וְלָקַחְתָּ֣ (then you shall take) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּרְצֵ֗עַ (an awl) וְנָתַתָּ֤ה (and thrust it) בְאָזְנוֹ֙ (through his ear) וּבַדֶּ֔לֶת (and to the door), וְהָיָ֥ה (and he shall be) לְךָ֖ (your) עֶ֣בֶד (servant) עוֹלָ֑ם (forever); וְאַ֥ף (and) לַאֲמָתְךָ֖ (to your maidservant) תַּעֲשֶׂה־ (you shall do) כֵּֽן׃ (likewise).

18 לֹא־ (Not) יִקְשֶׁ֣ה (it shall seem hard) בְעֵינֶ֗ךָ (in your eyes) בְּשַׁלֵּֽחֲךָ֙ (when you send away) אֹת֤וֹ (him) חָפְשִׁי֙ (free) מֵֽעִמָּ֔ךְ (from you), כִּ֗י (for) מִשְׁנֶה֙ (double) שְׂכַ֣ר (he has been worth) שָׂכִ֔יר (of a hireling) עֲבָֽדְךָ֖ (in serving you) שֵׁ֣שׁ (six) שָׁנִ֑ים (years); וּבֵֽרַכְךָ֙ (and will bless you) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) בְּכֹ֖ל (in all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תַּעֲשֶֽׂה׃פ (you do).

Firstborn Animals
(Exodus 13:1–16)

19 כָּֽל־ (All) הַבְּכ֡וֹר (the firstborn) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) יִוָּלֵ֨ד (come) בִּבְקָרְךָ֤ (from your herd) וּבְצֹֽאנְךָ֙ (and your flock)— הַזָּכָ֔ר (the male)— תַּקְדִּ֖ישׁ (you shall sanctify) לַיהוָ֣ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God). לֹ֤א (Not) תַעֲבֹד֙ (you shall do work) בִּבְכֹ֣ר (with the firstborn) שׁוֹרֶ֔ךָ (of your herd), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תָגֹ֖ז (shear) בְּכ֥וֹר (the firstborn) צֹאנֶֽךָ׃ (of your flock).

20 לִפְנֵי֩ (Before the face of) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֤יךָ (your God) תֹאכֲלֶ֙נּוּ֙ (you shall eat it) שָׁנָ֣ה (year) בְשָׁנָ֔ה (by year) בַּמָּק֖וֹם (in the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יִבְחַ֣ר (chooses) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH)— אַתָּ֖ה (You) וּבֵיתֶֽךָ׃ (and your house).

21 וְכִֽי־ (But if) יִהְיֶ֨ה (there is) ב֜וֹ (in it) מ֗וּם (a blemish)— פִּסֵּ֙חַ֙ (lameness) א֣וֹ (or) עִוֵּ֔ר (blindness), כֹּ֖ל (any) מ֣וּם (blemish) רָ֑ע (serious)— לֹ֣א (not) תִזְבָּחֶ֔נּוּ (you shall sacrifice it) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God).

22 בִּשְׁעָרֶ֖יךָ (Within your gates) תֹּאכֲלֶ֑נּוּ (you may eat it), הַטָּמֵ֤א (the unclean) וְהַטָּהוֹר֙ (and the clean) יַחְדָּ֔ו (alike), כַּצְּבִ֖י (as a gazelle) וְכָאַיָּֽל׃ (or a deer).

23 רַ֥ק (Only) אֶת־ (-) דָּמ֖וֹ (its blood) לֹ֣א (not) תֹאכֵ֑ל (you shall eat); עַל־ (on) הָאָ֥רֶץ (the ground) תִּשְׁפְּכֶ֖נּוּ (you shall pour it) כַּמָּֽיִם׃פ (like the water).
