The Israelites Multiply in Egypt
(Genesis 46:7–27)

1  וְאֵ֗לֶּה (And these) שְׁמוֹת֙ (are the names) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), הַבָּאִ֖ים (who came) מִצְרָ֑יְמָה (to Egypt) אֵ֣ת (with) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob); אִ֥ישׁ (each man) וּבֵית֖וֹ (and his house) בָּֽאוּ׃ (they came):

2  רְאוּבֵ֣ן (Reuben), שִׁמְע֔וֹן (Simeon), לֵוִ֖י (Levi), וִיהוּדָֽה׃ (and Judah),

3  יִשָּׂשכָ֥ר (Issachar), זְבוּלֻ֖ן (Zebulun), וּבְנְיָמִֽן׃ (and Benjamin),

4  דָּ֥ן (Dan) וְנַפְתָּלִ֖י (and Naphtali),

גָּ֥ד (Gad) וְאָשֵֽׁר׃ (and Asher).

5  וַֽיְהִ֗י (And were) כָּל־ (all) נֶ֛פֶשׁ (the souls) יֹצְאֵ֥י (coming out) יֶֽרֶךְ־ (of the loins) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (of Jacob) שִׁבְעִ֣ים (seventy) נָ֑פֶשׁ (souls), וְיוֹסֵ֖ף (and Joseph) הָיָ֥ה (was) בְמִצְרָֽיִם׃ (in Egypt).

6  וַיָּ֤מָת (And died) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph), וְכָל־ (and all) אֶחָ֔יו (his brothers), וְכֹ֖ל (and all) הַדּ֥וֹר (generation) הַהֽוּא׃ (that). 7  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) פָּר֧וּ (were fruitful) וַֽיִּשְׁרְצ֛וּ (and they swarmed), וַיִּרְבּ֥וּ (and they multiplied), וַיַּֽעַצְמ֖וּ (and they grew mighty) בִּמְאֹ֣ד (exceedingly) מְאֹ֑ד (exceedingly). וַתִּמָּלֵ֥א (And was filled) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) אֹתָֽם׃פ (with them).

Oppression by a New King
(Acts 7:15–19)

8  וַיָּ֥קָם (And there arose) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (a king) חָדָ֖שׁ (new) עַל־ (over) מִצְרָ֑יִם (Egypt), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) לֹֽא־ (not) יָדַ֖ע (had known) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵֽף׃ (Joseph). 9  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said) אֶל־ (to) עַמּ֑וֹ (his people), הִנֵּ֗ה (Behold), עַ֚ם (the people) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) רַ֥ב (are many) וְעָצ֖וּם (and mightier) מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ (than us). 10  הָ֥בָה (Come), נִֽתְחַכְּמָ֖ה (let us act wisely) ל֑וֹ (with him), פֶּן־ (lest) יִרְבֶּ֗ה (he multiply), וְהָיָ֞ה (and it comes to pass), כִּֽי־ (when) תִקְרֶ֤אנָה (meets us) מִלְחָמָה֙ (war), וְנוֹסַ֤ף (that may join himself) גַּם־ (also) הוּא֙ (he) עַל־ (to) שֹׂ֣נְאֵ֔ינוּ (those hating us) וְנִלְחַם־ (and fight) בָּ֖נוּ (against us), וְעָלָ֥ה (and go up) מִן־ (out) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

11  וַיָּשִׂ֤ימוּ (And they set) עָלָיו֙ (over him) שָׂרֵ֣י (chiefs) מִסִּ֔ים (of forced labor), לְמַ֥עַן (in order to) עַנֹּת֖וֹ (afflict them) בְּסִבְלֹתָ֑ם (with their burdens). וַיִּ֜בֶן (And they built) עָרֵ֤י (cities) מִסְכְּנוֹת֙ (store) לְפַרְעֹ֔ה (for Pharaoh) אֶת־ (-) פִּתֹ֖ם (Pithom) וְאֶת־ (and) רַעַמְסֵֽס׃ (Rameses). 12  וְכַאֲשֶׁר֙ (And the more) יְעַנּ֣וּ (they afflicted) אֹת֔וֹ (him), כֵּ֥ן (so) יִרְבֶּ֖ה (he multiplied) וְכֵ֣ן (and so) יִפְרֹ֑ץ (he burst forth). וַיָּקֻ֕צוּ (And they were in dread) מִפְּנֵ֖י (from the face) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

13  וַיַּעֲבִ֧דוּ (And made serve) מִצְרַ֛יִם (Egypt) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בְּפָֽרֶךְ׃ (with harshness), 14  וַיְמָרְר֨וּ (and they made bitter) אֶת־ (-) חַיֵּיהֶ֜ם (their lives) בַּעֲבֹדָ֣ה (with labor) קָשָׁ֗ה (hard) בְּחֹ֙מֶר֙ (with mortar), וּבִלְבֵנִ֔ים (and with bricks), וּבְכָל־ (and with all manner) עֲבֹדָ֖ה (of labor) בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה (in the field)— אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) עֲבֹ֣דָתָ֔ם (their service) אֲשֶׁר־ (in which) עָבְד֥וּ (they made serve) בָהֶ֖ם (for them) בְּפָֽרֶךְ׃ (with harshness).

15  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And spoke) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖ת (to the midwives), הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת (the Hebrewesses), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (of whom) שֵׁ֤ם (the name) הָֽאַחַת֙ (of the one) שִׁפְרָ֔ה (was Shiphrah), וְשֵׁ֥ם (and the name) הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית (of the second) פּוּעָֽה׃ (was Puah). 16  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), בְּיַלֶּדְכֶן֙ (When you⁺ cause to give birth) אֶת־ (-) הָֽעִבְרִיּ֔וֹת (the Hebrewesses) וּרְאִיתֶ֖ן (and you⁺ see them) עַל־ (on) הָאָבְנָ֑יִם (the birthstools), אִם־ (if) בֵּ֥ן (a son) הוּא֙ (he is), וַהֲמִתֶּ֣ן (then you⁺ shall kill) אֹת֔וֹ (him); וְאִם־ (but if) בַּ֥ת (a daughter) הִ֖יא (she is), וָחָֽיָה׃ (then she shall live).

17  וַתִּירֶ֤אןָ (And feared) הַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙ (the midwives) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), וְלֹ֣א (and not) עָשׂ֔וּ (did they do) כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (commanded) אֲלֵיהֶ֖ן (to them) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ (and kept alive) אֶת־ (-) הַיְלָדִֽים׃ (the male children). 18  וַיִּקְרָ֤א (And called) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֔ת (for the midwives) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) לָהֶ֔ן (to them), מַדּ֥וּעַ (Why) עֲשִׂיתֶ֖ן (have you⁺ done) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ (and kept alive) אֶת־ (-) הַיְלָדִֽים׃ (the male children).

19  וַתֹּאמַ֤רְןָ (And said) הַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙ (the midwives) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh), כִּ֣י (Because) לֹ֧א (not) כַנָּשִׁ֛ים (are like the women) הַמִּצְרִיֹּ֖ת (Egyptians), הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת (the Hebrewesses). כִּֽי־ (For) חָי֣וֹת (are lively) הֵ֔נָּה (they); בְּטֶ֨רֶם (before) תָּב֧וֹא (comes) אֲלֵהֶ֛ן (to them) הַמְיַלֶּ֖דֶת (the midwife), וְיָלָֽדוּ׃ (they have given birth).

20  וַיֵּ֥יטֶב (And dealt well) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֑ת (with the midwives), וַיִּ֧רֶב (and multiplied) הָעָ֛ם (the people), וַיַּֽעַצְמ֖וּ (and they grew mighty) מְאֹֽד׃ (exceedingly). 21  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass), כִּֽי־ (because) יָֽרְא֥וּ (feared) הַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖ת (the midwives) אֶת־ (-) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God), וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (that He provided) לָהֶ֖ם (for them) בָּתִּֽים׃ (houses).

22  וַיְצַ֣ו (And commanded) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh) לְכָל־ (to all) עַמּ֖וֹ (his people), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), כָּל־ (Every) הַבֵּ֣ן (son) הַיִּלּ֗וֹד (born) הַיְאֹ֙רָה֙ (into the River) תַּשְׁלִיכֻ֔הוּ (you⁺ shall cast him), וְכָל־ (and every) הַבַּ֖ת (daughter) תְּחַיּֽוּן׃ס (you⁺ shall let live).
