Jacob’s Journey to Egypt

1  וַיִּסַּ֤ע (And journeyed) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) ל֔וֹ (his), וַיָּבֹ֖א (and he came) בְּאֵ֣רָה (to Beer-) שָּׁ֑בַע (sheba), וַיִּזְבַּ֣ח (and he sacrificed) זְבָחִ֔ים (sacrifices) לֵאלֹהֵ֖י (to the God) אָבִ֥יו (of his father) יִצְחָֽק׃ (Isaac). 2  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And spoke) אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ (God) לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (to Israel) בְּמַרְאֹ֣ת (in visions) הַלַּ֔יְלָה (of the night), וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and said), יַעֲקֹ֣ב׀ (Jacob), יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob).

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), הִנֵּֽנִי׃ (Behold, it is I).

3  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And He said), אָנֹכִ֥י (I am) הָאֵ֖ל (the God), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) אָבִ֑יךָ (of your father); אַל־ (not) תִּירָא֙ (do fear) מֵרְדָ֣ה (from going down) מִצְרַ֔יְמָה (to Egypt), כִּֽי־ (for) לְג֥וֹי (into a nation) גָּד֖וֹל (great) אֲשִֽׂימְךָ֥ (I will make you) שָֽׁם׃ (there). 4  אָנֹכִ֗י (I) אֵרֵ֤ד (will go down) עִמְּךָ֙ (with you) מִצְרַ֔יְמָה (to Egypt), וְאָנֹכִ֖י (and I) אַֽעַלְךָ֣ (will bring you up) גַם־ (also) עָלֹ֑ה (bringing), וְיוֹסֵ֕ף (and Joseph) יָשִׁ֥ית (will put) יָד֖וֹ (his hand) עַל־ (on) עֵינֶֽיךָ׃ (your eyes).

5  וַיָּ֥קָם (And arose) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) מִבְּאֵ֣ר (from Beer-) שָׁ֑בַע (sheba), וַיִּשְׂא֨וּ (and carried) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) יַעֲקֹ֣ב (Jacob) אֲבִיהֶ֗ם (their father), וְאֶת־ (and) טַפָּם֙ (their little ones), וְאֶת־ (and) נְשֵׁיהֶ֔ם (their wives), בָּעֲגָל֕וֹת (in the carts) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) שָׁלַ֥ח (had sent) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh) לָשֵׂ֥את (to carry) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (him). 6  וַיִּקְח֣וּ (And they took) אֶת־ (-) מִקְנֵיהֶ֗ם (their livestock), וְאֶת־ (and) רְכוּשָׁם֙ (their possessions), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) רָֽכְשׁוּ֙ (they had acquired) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan), וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (and they came) מִצְרָ֑יְמָה (to Egypt) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) וְכָל־ (and all) זַרְע֥וֹ (his seed) אִתּֽוֹ׃ (with him).

7  בָּנָ֞יו (His sons), וּבְנֵ֤י (and the sons) בָנָיו֙ (of his sons) אִתּ֔וֹ (with him), בְּנֹתָ֛יו (his daughters), וּבְנ֥וֹת (and daughters) בָּנָ֖יו (of his sons), וְכָל־ (and all) זַרְע֑וֹ (his seed), הֵבִ֥יא (he brought) אִתּ֖וֹ (with him) מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ס (to Egypt).

8  וְאֵ֨לֶּה (And these are) שְׁמ֧וֹת (the names) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) הַבָּאִ֥ים (the ones coming) מִצְרַ֖יְמָה (to Egypt), יַעֲקֹ֣ב (Jacob) וּבָנָ֑יו (and his sons): בְּכֹ֥ר (The firstborn) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (of Jacob), רְאוּבֵֽן׃ (Reuben).

9  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) רְאוּבֵ֑ן (of Reuben): חֲנ֥וֹךְ (Hanoch), וּפַלּ֖וּא (and Pallu), וְחֶצְר֥וֹן (and Hezron), וְכַרְמִֽי׃ (and Carmi).

10  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) שִׁמְע֗וֹן (of Simeon): יְמוּאֵ֧ל (Jemuel), וְיָמִ֛ין (and Jamin), וְאֹ֖הַד (and Ohad), וְיָכִ֣ין (and Jachin), וְצֹ֑חַר (and Zohar), וְשָׁא֖וּל (and Shaul) בֶּן־ (son) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִֽית׃ (of the Canaanitess).

11  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) לֵוִ֑י (of Levi): גֵּרְשׁ֕וֹן (Gershon), קְהָ֖ת (Kohath), וּמְרָרִֽי׃ (and Merari).

12  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah): עֵ֧ר (Er), וְאוֹנָ֛ן (and Onan), וְשֵׁלָ֖ה (and Shelah), וָפֶ֣רֶץ (and Perez), וָזָ֑רַח (and Zerah); וַיָּ֨מָת (and died) עֵ֤ר (Er) וְאוֹנָן֙ (and Onan) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan).

וַיִּהְי֥וּ (And were) בְנֵי־ (the sons) פֶ֖רֶץ (of Perez) חֶצְר֥וֹן (Hezron) וְחָמֽוּל׃ (and Hamul).

13  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) יִשָׂשכָ֑ר (of Issachar): תּוֹלָ֥ע (Tola), וּפֻוָּ֖ה (and Puvah), וְי֥וֹב (and Job), וְשִׁמְרֽוֹן׃ (and Shimron).

14  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) זְבוּלֻ֑ן (of Zebulun): סֶ֥רֶד (Sered), וְאֵל֖וֹן (and Elon), וְיַחְלְאֵֽל׃ (and Jahleel).

15  אֵ֣לֶּה׀ (These) בְּנֵ֣י (are the sons) לֵאָ֗ה (of Leah), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) יָֽלְדָ֤ה (she bore) לְיַעֲקֹב֙ (to Jacob) בְּפַדַּ֣ן (in Paddan-) אֲרָ֔ם (aram), וְאֵ֖ת (and together with) דִּינָ֣ה (Dinah) בִתּ֑וֹ (his daughter). כָּל־ (All) נֶ֧פֶשׁ (the souls), בָּנָ֛יו (his sons) וּבְנוֹתָ֖יו (and his daughters), שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (were thirty) וְשָׁלֹֽשׁ׃ (and three).

The Children of Zilpah

16  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) גָ֔ד (of Gad): צִפְי֥וֹן (ZIphion), וְחַגִּ֖י (and Haggi), שׁוּנִ֣י (Shuni), וְאֶצְבֹּ֑ן (and Ezbon), עֵרִ֥י (Eri), וַֽאֲרוֹדִ֖י (and Arodi), וְאַרְאֵלִֽי׃ (and Areli).

17  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) אָשֵׁ֗ר (of Asher): יִמְנָ֧ה (Imnah), וְיִשְׁוָ֛ה (and Ishvah), וְיִשְׁוִ֥י (and Ishvi), וּבְרִיעָ֖ה (and Beriah), וְשֶׂ֣רַח (and Serah) אֲחֹתָ֑ם (their sister).

וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) בְרִיעָ֔ה (of Beriah): חֶ֖בֶר (Heber), וּמַלְכִּיאֵֽל׃ (and Malchiel).

18  אֵ֚לֶּה (These) בְּנֵ֣י (are the sons) זִלְפָּ֔ה (of Zilpah), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) נָתַ֥ן (gave) לָבָ֖ן (Laban) לְלֵאָ֣ה (to Leah) בִתּ֑וֹ (his daughter), וַתֵּ֤לֶד (and she bore) אֶת־ (-) אֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב (to Jacob), שֵׁ֥שׁ (six) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten) נָֽפֶשׁ׃ (souls).

The Children of Rachel

19  בְּנֵ֤י (The sons) רָחֵל֙ (of Rachel), אֵ֣שֶׁת (wife) יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob): יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) וּבִנְיָמִֽן׃ (and Benjamin).

20  וַיִּוָּלֵ֣ד (And were born) לְיוֹסֵף֮ (to Joseph) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַיִם֒ (of Egypt), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whom) יָֽלְדָה־ (bore) לּוֹ֙ (to him) אָֽסְנַ֔ת (Asenath) בַּת־ (the daughter) פּ֥וֹטִי (of Poti-) פֶ֖רַע (phera) כֹּהֵ֣ן (priest) אֹ֑ן (of On) אֶת־ (-): מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה (Manasseh) וְאֶת־ (and) אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (Ephraim).

21  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) בִנְיָמִ֗ן (of Benjamin): בֶּ֤לַע (Bela), וָבֶ֙כֶר֙ (and Becher), וְאַשְׁבֵּ֔ל (and Ashbel), גֵּרָ֥א (Gera), וְנַעֲמָ֖ן (and Naaman), אֵחִ֣י (Ehi), וָרֹ֑אשׁ (and Rosh), מֻפִּ֥ים (Muppim), וְחֻפִּ֖ים (and Huppim), וָאָֽרְדְּ׃ (and Ard).

22  אֵ֚לֶּה (These) בְּנֵ֣י (are the sons) רָחֵ֔ל (of Rachel) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יֻלַּ֖ד (were born) לְיַעֲקֹ֑ב (to Jacob)— כָּל־ (in all) נֶ֖פֶשׁ (souls) אַרְבָּעָ֥ה (four) עָשָֽׂר׃ (and ten).

The Children of Bilhah

23  וּבְנֵי־ (And the sons) דָ֖ן (of Dan): חֻשִֽׁים׃ (Hushim).

24  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) נַפְתָּלִ֑י (of Naphtali): יַחְצְאֵ֥ל (Jahzeel), וְגוּנִ֖י (and Guni), וְיֵ֥צֶר (and Jezer), וְשִׁלֵּֽם׃ (and Shillem).

25  אֵ֚לֶּה (These are) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) בִלְהָ֔ה (of Bilhah), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) נָתַ֥ן (gave) לָבָ֖ן (Laban) לְרָחֵ֣ל (to Rachel) בִּתּ֑וֹ (his daughter), וַתֵּ֧לֶד (and she bore) אֶת־ (-) אֵ֛לֶּה (these) לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב (to Jacob)— כָּל־ (in all) נֶ֥פֶשׁ (souls) שִׁבְעָֽה׃ (seven).

26  כָּל־ (All) הַ֠נֶּפֶשׁ (the souls) הַבָּאָ֨ה (the ones coming) לְיַעֲקֹ֤ב (to Jacob) מִצְרַ֙יְמָה֙ (to Egypt) יֹצְאֵ֣י (the ones coming out) יְרֵכ֔וֹ (of his thigh), מִלְּבַ֖ד (besides) נְשֵׁ֣י (the wives) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (of Jacob), כָּל־ (in all) נֶ֖פֶשׁ (souls were) שִׁשִּׁ֥ים (sixty) וָשֵֽׁשׁ׃ (and six). 27  וּבְנֵ֥י (And the sons) יוֹסֵ֛ף (of Joseph) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יֻלַּד־ (were born) ל֥וֹ (to him) בְמִצְרַ֖יִם (in Egypt), נֶ֣פֶשׁ (souls were) שְׁנָ֑יִם (two). כָּל־ (All) הַנֶּ֧פֶשׁ (the souls) לְבֵֽית־ (of the house) יַעֲקֹ֛ב (of Jacob) הַבָּ֥אָה (the ones coming) מִצְרַ֖יְמָה (to Egypt) שִׁבְעִֽים׃פ (were seventy).

Jacob Arrives in Egypt

28  וְאֶת־ (And) יְהוּדָ֞ה (Judah) שָׁלַ֤ח (he sent) לְפָנָיו֙ (before him) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph), לְהוֹרֹ֥ת (to direct) לְפָנָ֖יו (before him) גֹּ֑שְׁנָה (to Goshen). וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (And they came) אַ֥רְצָה (to the land) גֹּֽשֶׁן׃ (of Goshen). 29  וַיֶּאְסֹ֤ר (And harnessed) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) מֶרְכַּבְתּ֔וֹ (his chariot), וַיַּ֛עַל (and went up) לִקְרַֽאת־ (to meet) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (Israel) אָבִ֖יו (his father), גֹּ֑שְׁנָה (to Goshen), וַיֵּרָ֣א (and he appeared) אֵלָ֗יו (to him) וַיִּפֹּל֙ (and he fell) עַל־ (on) צַוָּארָ֔יו (his necks) וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ (and he wept) עַל־ (on) צַוָּארָ֖יו (his necks) עֽוֹד׃ (a long time).

30  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph), אָמ֣וּתָה (Let me die) הַפָּ֑עַם (now), אַחֲרֵי֙ (after) רְאוֹתִ֣י (my seeing) אֶת־ (-) פָּנֶ֔יךָ (your face), כִּ֥י (for) עוֹדְךָ֖ (still) חָֽי׃ (you are alive).

31  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יוֹסֵ֤ף (Joseph) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָיו֙ (his brothers) וְאֶל־ (and to) בֵּ֣ית (the house) אָבִ֔יו (of his father), אֶעֱלֶ֖ה (I will go up) וְאַגִּ֣ידָה (and let me tell) לְפַרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh) וְאֹֽמְרָ֣ה (and let me say) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), אַחַ֧י (My brothers) וּבֵית־ (and the house) אָבִ֛י (of my father) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who were) בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ (in the land) כְּנַ֖עַן (of Canaan) בָּ֥אוּ (have come) אֵלָֽי׃ (to me). 32  וְהָאֲנָשִׁים֙ (And the men) רֹ֣עֵי (are shedherds) צֹ֔אן (of sheep), כִּֽי־ (for) אַנְשֵׁ֥י (men) מִקְנֶ֖ה (of livestock) הָי֑וּ (they have been); וְצֹאנָ֧ם (and their flocks), וּבְקָרָ֛ם (and their herds), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that is) לָהֶ֖ם (theirs) הֵבִֽיאוּ׃ (they have brought).

33  וְהָיָ֕ה (And it shall be), כִּֽי־ (when) יִקְרָ֥א (calls) לָכֶ֖ם (you⁺) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh) וְאָמַ֖ר (and says), מַה־ (What are) מַּעֲשֵׂיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ works)? 34  וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֗ם (That you⁺ shall say), אַנְשֵׁ֨י (Men) מִקְנֶ֜ה (of livestock) הָי֤וּ (have been) עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ (your servants) מִנְּעוּרֵ֣ינוּ (from our youth) וְעַד־ (and even until) עַ֔תָּה (now), גַּם־ (both) אֲנַ֖חְנוּ (we), גַּם־ (and also) אֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ (our fathers), בַּעֲב֗וּר (so that) תֵּשְׁבוּ֙ (you⁺ may dwell) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) גֹּ֔שֶׁן (of Goshen); כִּֽי־ (for) תוֹעֲבַ֥ת (an abomination) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) כָּל־ (is every) רֹ֥עֵה (shepherd) צֹֽאן׃ (of sheep).
