Jacob Settles in Goshen

1  וַיָּבֹ֣א (And went) יוֹסֵף֮ (Joseph) וַיַּגֵּ֣ד (and told) לְפַרְעֹה֒ (Pharaoh), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and he said), אָבִ֨י (My father) וְאַחַ֜י (and my brothers), וְצֹאנָ֤ם (and their flocks), וּבְקָרָם֙ (and their herds), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that is) לָהֶ֔ם (theirs) בָּ֖אוּ (have come) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan); וְהִנָּ֖ם (and behold) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (they are in the land) גֹּֽשֶׁן׃ (of Goshen).

2  וּמִקְצֵ֣ה (And from the end) אֶחָ֔יו (of his brothers) לָקַ֖ח (he took) חֲמִשָּׁ֣ה (five) אֲנָשִׁ֑ים (men) וַיַּצִּגֵ֖ם (and he presented them) לִפְנֵ֥י (before) פַרְעֹֽה׃ (Pharaoh).

3  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹ֛ה (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers), מַה־ (What are) מַּעֲשֵׂיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ works)?

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they said) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֗ה (Pharaoh), רֹעֵ֥ה (Shepherds) צֹאן֙ (of sheep) עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ (your servants are), גַּם־ (both) אֲנַ֖חְנוּ (we) גַּם־ (and also) אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ׃ (our fathers).

4  וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they said) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֗ה (Pharaoh), לָג֣וּר (To sojourn) בָּאָרֶץ֮ (in the land) בָּאנוּ֒ (we have come), כִּי־ (because) אֵ֣ין (there is no) מִרְעֶ֗ה (pasture) לַצֹּאן֙ (for the sheep) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לַעֲבָדֶ֔יךָ (your servants have), כִּֽי־ (for) כָבֵ֥ד (severe) הָרָעָ֖ב (the famine is) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan). וְעַתָּ֛ה (And now) יֵֽשְׁבוּ־ (let dwell) נָ֥א (please) עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ (your servants) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) גֹּֽשֶׁן׃ (of Goshen).

5  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And spoke) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אָבִ֥יךָ (Your father) וְאַחֶ֖יךָ (and your brothers) בָּ֥אוּ (have come) אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ (to you). 6  אֶ֤רֶץ (The land) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) לְפָנֶ֣יךָ (before you) הִ֔וא (it is). בְּמֵיטַ֣ב (In the best) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land) הוֹשֵׁ֥ב (cause to dwell) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֖יךָ (your father) וְאֶת־ (and) אַחֶ֑יךָ (your brothers), יֵשְׁבוּ֙ (let them dwell) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) גֹּ֔שֶׁן (of Goshen). וְאִם־ (And if) יָדַ֗עְתָּ (you know) וְיֶשׁ־ (and there are) בָּם֙ (among them) אַנְשֵׁי־ (men) חַ֔יִל (of valor), וְשַׂמְתָּ֛ם (and you shall appoint them) שָׂרֵ֥י (captains) מִקְנֶ֖ה (of livestock). עַל־ (Over) אֲשֶׁר־ (what is) לִֽי׃ (mine).

7  וַיָּבֵ֤א (And brought in) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) יַֽעֲקֹ֣ב (Jacob) אָבִ֔יו (his father), וַיַּֽעֲמִדֵ֖הוּ (and he caused him to stand) לִפְנֵ֣י (before) פַרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh); וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ (and blessed) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) אֶת־ (-) פַּרְעֹֽה׃ (Pharaoh).

8  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob), כַּמָּ֕ה (How many are) יְמֵ֖י (the days) שְׁנֵ֥י (of the years) חַיֶּֽיךָ׃ (of your life)?

9  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh), יְמֵי֙ (The days) שְׁנֵ֣י (of the years) מְגוּרַ֔י (of my sojournings) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (are thirty) וּמְאַ֖ת (and a hundred) שָׁנָ֑ה (years). מְעַ֣ט (Few) וְרָעִ֗ים (and evil) הָיוּ֙ (have been) יְמֵי֙ (the days) שְׁנֵ֣י (of the years) חַיַּ֔י (of my life), וְלֹ֣א (and not) הִשִּׂ֗יגוּ (they have reached) אֶת־ (-) יְמֵי֙ (the days) שְׁנֵי֙ (of the years) חַיֵּ֣י (of the lives) אֲבֹתַ֔י (of my fathers), בִּימֵ֖י (in the days) מְגוּרֵיהֶֽם׃ (of their sojournings).

10  וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ (And blessed) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) אֶת־ (-) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh), וַיֵּצֵ֖א (and he went out) מִלִּפְנֵ֥י (from before) פַרְעֹֽה׃ (Pharaoh).

11  וַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב (And settled) יוֹסֵף֮ (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֣יו (his father) וְאֶת־ (and) אֶחָיו֒ (his brothers), וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (and gave) לָהֶ֤ם (them) אֲחֻזָּה֙ (a possession) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), בְּמֵיטַ֥ב (in the best) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the land), בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) רַעְמְסֵ֑ס (of Rameses), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) פַרְעֹֽה׃ (Pharaoh). 12  וַיְכַלְכֵּ֤ל (And provided) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֣יו (his father), וְאֶת־ (and) אֶחָ֔יו (his brothers), וְאֵ֖ת (and) כָּל־ (all) בֵּ֣ית (the house) אָבִ֑יו (of his father), לֶ֖חֶם (with bread), לְפִ֥י (according to the mouth) הַטָּֽף׃ (of the little ones).

The Famine Continues

13  וְלֶ֤חֶם (And bread) אֵין֙ (there was no) בְּכָל־ (in all) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth). כִּֽי־ (For) כָבֵ֥ד (severe) הָרָעָ֖ב (the famine was) מְאֹ֑ד (very), וַתֵּ֜לַהּ (so that languished) אֶ֤רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) וְאֶ֣רֶץ (and the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan) מִפְּנֵ֖י (because) הָרָעָֽב׃ (of the famine). 14  וַיְלַקֵּ֣ט (And gathered up) יוֹסֵ֗ף (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ (the silver) הַנִּמְצָ֤א (found) בְאֶֽרֶץ־ (in the land) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) וּבְאֶ֣רֶץ (and in the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan) בַּשֶּׁ֖בֶר (for the grain) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הֵ֣ם (they) שֹׁבְרִ֑ים (were buying), וַיָּבֵ֥א (and brought) יוֹסֵ֛ף (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֖סֶף (the silver) בֵּ֥יתָה (to the house) פַרְעֹֽה׃ (of Pharaoh). 15  וַיִּתֹּ֣ם (And was finished) הַכֶּ֗סֶף (the silver) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַיִם֮ (of Egypt) וּמֵאֶ֣רֶץ (and from the land) כְּנַעַן֒ (of Canaan), וַיָּבֹאוּ֩ (and came) כָל־ (all) מִצְרַ֨יִם (Egypt) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֤ף (Joseph) לֵאמֹר֙ (and said), הָֽבָה־ (Give) לָּ֣נוּ (to us) לֶ֔חֶם (bread), וְלָ֥מָּה (and why) נָמ֖וּת (should we die) נֶגְדֶּ֑ךָ (in your presence)? כִּ֥י (For) אָפֵ֖ס (is gone) כָּֽסֶף׃ (the silver).

16  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph), הָב֣וּ (Give) מִקְנֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ livestock), וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה (and I will give it) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) בְּמִקְנֵיכֶ֑ם (for your⁺ livestock), אִם־ (if) אָפֵ֖ס (is gone) כָּֽסֶף׃ (the silver). 17  וַיָּבִ֣יאוּ (And they brought) אֶת־ (-) מִקְנֵיהֶם֮ (their livestock) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵף֒ (Joseph), וַיִּתֵּ֣ן (and gave) לָהֶם֩ (to them) יוֹסֵ֨ף (Joseph) לֶ֜חֶם (bread) בַּסּוּסִ֗ים (for the horses), וּבְמִקְנֵ֥ה (and for the livestock) הַצֹּ֛אן (of the sheep), וּבְמִקְנֵ֥ה (and for the livestock) הַבָּקָ֖ר (of the cattle), וּבַחֲמֹרִ֑ים (and for the donkeys). וַיְנַהֲלֵ֤ם (And he led them) בַּלֶּ֙חֶם֙ (with bread) בְּכָל־ (for all) מִקְנֵהֶ֔ם (their livestock) בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה (year) הַהִֽוא׃ (that).

18  וַתִּתֹּם֮ (And ended) הַשָּׁנָ֣ה (year) הַהִוא֒ (that), וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ (and they came) אֵלָ֜יו (to him) בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה (in the year) הַשֵּׁנִ֗ית (the second) וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ (and said) לוֹ֙ (to him), לֹֽא־ (Not) נְכַחֵ֣ד (we will hide) מֵֽאֲדֹנִ֔י (from my lord), כִּ֚י (that) אִם־ (if) תַּ֣ם (is gone) הַכֶּ֔סֶף (the silver), וּמִקְנֵ֥ה (and the livestock) הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה (of the animals) אֶל־ (belong to) אֲדֹנִ֑י (my lord). לֹ֤א (Nothing) נִשְׁאַר֙ (remains) לִפְנֵ֣י (before) אֲדֹנִ֔י (my lord), בִּלְתִּ֥י (except) אִם־ (rather) גְּוִיָּתֵ֖נוּ (our bodies) וְאַדְמָתֵֽנוּ׃ (and our land). 19  לָ֧מָּה (Why) נָמ֣וּת (should we die) לְעֵינֶ֗יךָ (before your eyes), גַּם־ (both) אֲנַ֙חְנוּ֙ (we) גַּ֣ם (and) אַדְמָתֵ֔נוּ (our land)? קְנֵֽה־ (Buy) אֹתָ֥נוּ (us) וְאֶת־ (and) אַדְמָתֵ֖נוּ (our land) בַּלָּ֑חֶם (for bread), וְנִֽהְיֶ֞ה (and we will be) אֲנַ֤חְנוּ (we) וְאַדְמָתֵ֙נוּ֙ (and our land) עֲבָדִ֣ים (servants) לְפַרְעֹ֔ה (to Pharaoh). וְתֶן־ (And give us) זֶ֗רַע (seed), וְנִֽחְיֶה֙ (and we will live) וְלֹ֣א (and not) נָמ֔וּת (die), וְהָאֲדָמָ֖ה (that the land) לֹ֥א (not) תֵשָֽׁם׃ (will be desolate).

20  וַיִּ֨קֶן (And bought) יוֹסֵ֜ף (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אַדְמַ֤ת (the land) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) לְפַרְעֹ֔ה (for Pharaoh); כִּֽי־ (for) מָכְר֤וּ (sold) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) אִ֣ישׁ (every man) שָׂדֵ֔הוּ (his field), כִּֽי־ (because) חָזַ֥ק (was severe) עֲלֵהֶ֖ם (upon them) הָרָעָ֑ב (the famine). וַתְּהִ֥י (And became) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) לְפַרְעֹֽה׃ (unto Pharaoh). 21  וְאֶ֨ת־ (And) הָעָ֔ם (the people), הֶעֱבִ֥יר (he removed) אֹת֖וֹ (them) לֶעָרִ֑ים (to the cities), מִקְצֵ֥ה (from one end) גְבוּל־ (of the border) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) וְעַד־ (and to) קָצֵֽהוּ׃ (its other end). 22  רַ֛ק (Only) אַדְמַ֥ת (the land) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (of the priests) לֹ֣א (not) קָנָ֑ה (he did buy), כִּי֩ (for) חֹ֨ק (a fixed portion) לַכֹּהֲנִ֜ים (belonged to the priests) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) פַּרְעֹ֗ה (Pharaoh), וְאָֽכְל֤וּ (and they ate) אֶת־ (-) חֻקָּם֙ (their fixed portion) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) נָתַ֤ן (gave) לָהֶם֙ (to them) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֕ן (thus) לֹ֥א (not) מָכְר֖וּ (they did sell) אֶת־ (-) אַדְמָתָֽם׃ (their land).

23  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֔ם (the people), הֵן֩ (Behold), קָנִ֨יתִי (I have bought) אֶתְכֶ֥ם (you⁺) הַיּ֛וֹם (this day), וְאֶת־ (and) אַדְמַתְכֶ֖ם (your⁺ land), לְפַרְעֹ֑ה (for Pharaoh). הֵֽא־ (Behold), לָכֶ֣ם (for you⁺) זֶ֔רַע (seed), וּזְרַעְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ shall sow) אֶת־ (-) הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ (the land). 24  וְהָיָה֙ (And it shall come to pass) בַּתְּבוּאֹ֔ת (at the harvest), וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם (that you⁺ shall give) חֲמִישִׁ֖ית (a fifth) לְפַרְעֹ֑ה (to Pharaoh), וְאַרְבַּ֣ע (and four) הַיָּדֹ֡ת (of the hands) יִהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) לָכֶם֩ (for you⁺) לְזֶ֨רַע (as seed) הַשָּׂדֶ֧ה (of the field), וּֽלְאָכְלְכֶ֛ם (and for your⁺ eating), וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and for those) בְּבָתֵּיכֶ֖ם (in your⁺ houses), וְלֶאֱכֹ֥ל (and to eat) לְטַפְּכֶֽם׃ (for your⁺ little ones).

25  וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (And they said), הֶחֱיִתָ֑נוּ (You have caused us to live). נִמְצָא־ (We find) חֵן֙ (favor) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) אֲדֹנִ֔י (of my lord), וְהָיִ֥ינוּ (and we will be) עֲבָדִ֖ים (servants) לְפַרְעֹֽה׃ (to Pharaoh). 26  וַיָּ֣שֶׂם (And made) אֹתָ֣הּ (it) יוֹסֵ֡ף (Joseph) לְחֹק֩ (a statute) עַד־ (to) הַיּ֨וֹם (day) הַזֶּ֜ה (this) עַל־ (over) אַדְמַ֥ת (the land) מִצְרַ֛יִם (of Egypt) לְפַרְעֹ֖ה (for Pharaoh) לַחֹ֑מֶשׁ (the fifth), רַ֞ק (Only) אַדְמַ֤ת (the land) הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (of the priests) לְבַדָּ֔ם (which is unto them alone) לֹ֥א (and not) הָיְתָ֖ה (has come to belong) לְפַרְעֹֽה׃ (to Pharaoh).

The Israelites Prosper in Goshen

27  וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב (And dwelt) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) גֹּ֑שֶׁן (of Goshen). וַיֵּאָחֲז֣וּ (And they took possession) בָ֔הּ (in it), וַיִּפְר֥וּ (and they were fruitful), וַיִּרְבּ֖וּ (and they multiplied) מְאֹֽד׃ (exceedingly). 28  וַיְחִ֤י (And lived) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) שְׁבַ֥ע (seven) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten) שָׁנָ֑ה (years); וַיְהִ֤י (and was) יְמֵֽי־ (and the days) יַעֲקֹב֙ (of Jacob) שְׁנֵ֣י (years) חַיָּ֔יו (living) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים (and forty) וּמְאַ֖ת (and a hundred) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years).

29  וַיִּקְרְב֣וּ (And drew near) יְמֵֽי־ (the days) יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל (for Israel) לָמוּת֒ (to die), וַיִּקְרָ֣א׀ (and he called) לִבְנ֣וֹ (for his son) לְיוֹסֵ֗ף (for Joseph) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and said) לוֹ֙ (to him), אִם־ (If) נָ֨א (please) מָצָ֤אתִי (I have found) חֵן֙ (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ (in your eyes), שִֽׂים־ (put), נָ֥א (please), יָדְךָ֖ (your hand) תַּ֣חַת (under) יְרֵכִ֑י (my thigh), וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ (and you shall do) עִמָּדִי֙ (with me) חֶ֣סֶד (kindness) וֶאֱמֶ֔ת (and truth). אַל־ (Not) נָ֥א (please) תִקְבְּרֵ֖נִי (do bury me) בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃ (in Egypt), 30  וְשָֽׁכַבְתִּי֙ (and I shall lie) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתַ֔י (my fathers). וּנְשָׂאתַ֙נִי֙ (And you shall carry me) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (out of Egypt) וּקְבַרְתַּ֖נִי (and you shall bury me) בִּקְבֻרָתָ֑ם (in their burial place).

וַיֹּאמַ֕ר (And he said), אָנֹכִ֖י (I) אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה (I will do) כִדְבָרֶֽךָ׃ (according to your word).

31  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), הִשָּֽׁבְעָה֙ (Swear) לִ֔י (to me).

וַיִּשָּׁבַ֖ע (And he swore) ל֑וֹ (to him), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ (and bowed himself) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) עַל־ (on) רֹ֥אשׁ (the head) הַמִּטָּֽה׃פ (of the bed).
