Joseph Reveals His Identity

1  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) יָכֹ֨ל (was able) יוֹסֵ֜ף (Joseph) לְהִתְאַפֵּ֗ק (to restrain himself) לְכֹ֤ל (before all) הַנִּצָּבִים֙ (those who were standing) עָלָ֔יו (by him). וַיִּקְרָ֕א (And he cried out) הוֹצִ֥יאוּ (Make go out) כָל־ (every) אִ֖ישׁ (man) מֵעָלָ֑י (from me)!

וְלֹא־ (And no) עָ֤מַד (stood) אִישׁ֙ (man) אִתּ֔וֹ (with him) בְּהִתְוַדַּ֥ע (when made himself known) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָֽיו׃ (his brothers). 2  וַיִּתֵּ֥ן (And he gave) אֶת־ (-) קֹל֖וֹ (his voice) בִּבְכִ֑י (in weeping), וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ (and heard him) מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt) וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע (and heard) בֵּ֥ית (the house) פַּרְעֹֽה׃ (of Pharaoh).

3  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יוֹסֵ֤ף (Joseph) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָיו֙ (his brothers), אֲנִ֣י (I am) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph); הַע֥וֹד (does still) אָבִ֖י (my father) חָ֑י (live)?

וְלֹֽא־ (And not) יָכְל֤וּ (were able) אֶחָיו֙ (his brothers) לַעֲנ֣וֹת (to answer) אֹת֔וֹ (him), כִּ֥י (for) נִבְהֲל֖וּ (they were terrified) מִפָּנָֽיו׃ (in his presence).

4  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יוֹסֵ֧ף (Joseph) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָ֛יו (his brothers), גְּשׁוּ־ (Come near), נָ֥א (please), אֵלַ֖י (to me).

וַיִּגָּ֑שׁוּ (And they came near), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and he said), אֲנִי֙ (I am) יוֹסֵ֣ף (Joseph) אֲחִיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ brother), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) מְכַרְתֶּ֥ם (you⁺ sold) אֹתִ֖י (-) מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ (into Egypt). 5  וְעַתָּ֣ה׀ (And now) אַל־ (not) תֵּעָ֣צְב֗וּ (be grieved) וְאַל־ (and not) יִ֙חַר֙ (let it burn) בְּעֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ eyes) כִּֽי־ (that) מְכַרְתֶּ֥ם (you⁺ sold) אֹתִ֖י (me) הֵ֑נָּה (here), כִּ֣י (for) לְמִֽחְיָ֔ה (to preserve life). שְׁלָחַ֥נִי (Sent me) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) לִפְנֵיכֶֽם׃ (before you⁺). 6  כִּי־ (For) זֶ֛ה (these) שְׁנָתַ֥יִם (two years) הָרָעָ֖ב (the famine) בְּקֶ֣רֶב (has been in the midst) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth), וְעוֹד֙ (and there are still) חָמֵ֣שׁ (five) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (in which) אֵין־ (there is no) חָרִ֖ישׁ (plowing) וְקָצִּֽיר׃ (and harvesting). 7  וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֤נִי (And sent me) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם (before you⁺) לָשׂ֥וּם (to make) לָכֶ֛ם (for you⁺) שְׁאֵרִ֖ית (a remnant) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (in the earth), וּלְהַחֲי֣וֹת (and to give life) לָכֶ֔ם (to you⁺) לִפְלֵיטָ֖ה (for a deliverance) גְּדֹלָֽה׃ (by a great). 8  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) לֹֽא־ (not) אַתֶּ֞ם (you⁺) שְׁלַחְתֶּ֤ם (sent) אֹתִי֙ (me) הֵ֔נָּה (here), כִּ֖י (but) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God). וַיְשִׂימֵ֨נִֽי (And He has made me) לְאָ֜ב (for a father) לְפַרְעֹ֗ה (to Pharaoh), וּלְאָדוֹן֙ (and for a lord) לְכָל־ (of all) בֵּית֔וֹ (his house), וּמֹשֵׁ֖ל (and ruler) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

Joseph Sends for His Father

9  מַהֲרוּ֮ (Hurry) וַעֲל֣וּ (and go up) אֶל־ (to) אָבִי֒ (my father), וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֣ם (and you⁺ shall say) אֵלָ֗יו (to him), כֹּ֤ה (Thus) אָמַר֙ (says) בִּנְךָ֣ (your son) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph): שָׂמַ֧נִי (Has made me) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) לְאָד֖וֹן (lord) לְכָל־ (of all) מִצְרָ֑יִם (Egypt). רְדָ֥ה (Come down) אֵלַ֖י (to me); אַֽל־ (not) תַּעֲמֹֽד׃ (do delay). 10  וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֣ (And you shall dwell) בְאֶֽרֶץ־ (in the land) גֹּ֗שֶׁן (of Goshen) וְהָיִ֤יתָ (and you shall be) קָרוֹב֙ (near) אֵלַ֔י (to me), אַתָּ֕ה (you) וּבָנֶ֖יךָ (and your sons), וּבְנֵ֣י (and the sons) בָנֶ֑יךָ (of your sons), וְצֹאנְךָ֥ (and your flock), וּבְקָרְךָ֖ (and your herd), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) לָֽךְ׃ (yours). 11  וְכִלְכַּלְתִּ֤י (And I will provide) אֹֽתְךָ֙ (for you) שָׁ֔ם (there), כִּי־ (for) ע֛וֹד (there are still) חָמֵ֥שׁ (five) שָׁנִ֖ים (years) רָעָ֑ב (of famine); פֶּן־ (lest) תִּוָּרֵ֛שׁ (come to poverty) אַתָּ֥ה (you), וּבֵֽיתְךָ֖ (and your house), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) לָֽךְ׃ (yours).

12  וְהִנֵּ֤ה (And behold), עֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ eyes) רֹא֔וֹת (are seeing), וְעֵינֵ֖י (and the eyes) אָחִ֣י (of my brother) בִנְיָמִ֑ין (Benjamin), כִּי־ (that) פִ֖י (my mouth) הַֽמְדַבֵּ֥ר (is the one speaking) אֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺). 13  וְהִגַּדְתֶּ֣ם (And you⁺ shall tell) לְאָבִ֗י (to my father) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (of all) כְּבוֹדִי֙ (my glory) בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם (in Egypt), וְאֵ֖ת (and) כָּל־ (of all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) רְאִיתֶ֑ם (you⁺ have seen); וּמִֽהַרְתֶּ֛ם (and you⁺ shall hurry) וְהוֹרַדְתֶּ֥ם (and bring down) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֖י (my father) הֵֽנָּה׃ (here).

14  וַיִּפֹּ֛ל (And he fell) עַל־ (on) צַוְּארֵ֥י (the necks) בִנְיָמִֽן־ (of Benjamin) אָחִ֖יו (his brother) וַיֵּ֑בְךְּ (and wept); וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן (and Benjamin) בָּכָ֖ה (wept) עַל־ (on) צַוָּארָֽיו׃ (his necks). 15  וַיְנַשֵּׁ֥ק (And he kissed) לְכָל־ (all) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers) וַיֵּ֣בְךְּ (and wept) עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (over them). וְאַ֣חֲרֵי (And) כֵ֔ן (after that) דִּבְּר֥וּ (spoke) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers) אִתּֽוֹ׃ (with him).

Pharaoh Invites Jacob to Egypt

16  וְהַקֹּ֣ל (And the sound) נִשְׁמַ֗ע (was heard) בֵּ֤ית (in the house) פַּרְעֹה֙ (of Pharaoh), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), בָּ֖אוּ (Have come) אֲחֵ֣י (the brothers) יוֹסֵ֑ף (of Joseph). וַיִּיטַב֙ (And it was good) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) פַרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh) וּבְעֵינֵ֖י (and in the eyes) עֲבָדָֽיו׃ (of his servants).

17  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph), אֱמֹ֥ר (Say) אֶל־ (to) אַחֶ֖יךָ (your brothers), זֹ֣את (This) עֲשׂ֑וּ (do): טַֽעֲנוּ֙ (Load) אֶת־ (-) בְּעִ֣ירְכֶ֔ם (your⁺ animals), וּלְכוּ־ (and depart); בֹ֖אוּ (go) אַ֥רְצָה (to the land) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan), 18  וּקְח֧וּ (and take) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִיכֶ֛ם (your⁺ father) וְאֶת־ (and) בָּתֵּיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ households), וּבֹ֣אוּ (and come) אֵלָ֑י (to me), וְאֶתְּנָ֣ה (and I will give) לָכֶ֗ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) טוּב֙ (the good) אֶ֣רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), וְאִכְל֖וּ (and you⁺ will eat) אֶת־ (-) חֵ֥לֶב (the fat) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land). 19  וְאַתָּ֥ה (And you) צֻוֵּ֖יתָה (you have been commanded), זֹ֣את (This) עֲשׂ֑וּ (do): קְחוּ־ (Take) לָכֶם֩ (for yourselves) מֵאֶ֨רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֜יִם (of Egypt) עֲגָל֗וֹת (carts) לְטַפְּכֶם֙ (for your⁺ little ones), וְלִנְשֵׁיכֶ֔ם (and for your⁺ wives), וּנְשָׂאתֶ֥ם (and bring) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ father), וּבָאתֶֽם׃ (and come). 20  וְעֵ֣ינְכֶ֔ם (And your⁺ eye) אַל־ (not) תָּחֹ֖ס (let grieve) עַל־ (over) כְּלֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ vessels); כִּי־ (for) ט֛וּב (the good) כָּל־ (of all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) לָכֶ֥ם (yours⁺) הֽוּא׃ (it is).

21  וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ (And did) כֵן֙ (so) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel); וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (and gave) לָהֶ֥ם (them) יוֹסֵ֛ף (Joseph) עֲגָל֖וֹת (carts), עַל־ (according to) פִּ֣י (the mouth) פַרְעֹ֑ה (of Pharaoh), וַיִּתֵּ֥ן (and he gave) לָהֶ֛ם (them) צֵדָ֖ה (provisions) לַדָּֽרֶךְ׃ (for the journey). 22  לְכֻלָּ֥ם (To all of them) נָתַ֛ן (he gave) לָאִ֖ישׁ (to each man) חֲלִפ֣וֹת (changes) שְׂמָלֹ֑ת (of garments); וּלְבִנְיָמִ֤ן (and to Benjamin) נָתַן֙ (he gave) שְׁלֹ֣שׁ (three) מֵא֣וֹת (hundred shekels) כֶּ֔סֶף (of silver) וְחָמֵ֖שׁ (and five) חֲלִפֹ֥ת (changes) שְׂמָלֹֽת׃ (of garments). 23  וּלְאָבִ֞יו (And to his father) שָׁלַ֤ח (he sent) כְּזֹאת֙ (this): עֲשָׂרָ֣ה (Ten) חֲמֹרִ֔ים (donkeys) נֹשְׂאִ֖ים (carrying) מִטּ֣וּב (the good) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וְעֶ֣שֶׂר (and ten) אֲתֹנֹ֡ת (female donkeys) נֹֽ֠שְׂאֹת (carrying) בָּ֣ר (grain) וָלֶ֧חֶם (and bread) וּמָז֛וֹן (and food) לְאָבִ֖יו (for his father) לַדָּֽרֶךְ׃ (for the journey).

24  וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח (And he sent away) אֶת־ (-) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers) וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ (and they departed), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them) אַֽל־ (Not) תִּרְגְּז֖וּ (be shaken) בַּדָּֽרֶךְ׃ (along the way).

The Revival of Jacob

25  וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ (And they went up) מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם (out of Egypt), וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (and they came) אֶ֣רֶץ (to the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan), אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) אֲבִיהֶֽם׃ (their father), 26  וַיַּגִּ֨דוּ (and they told) ל֜וֹ (him) לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), ע֚וֹד (Still) יוֹסֵ֣ף (Joseph is) חַ֔י (alive)! וְכִֽי־ (And) ה֥וּא (he is) מֹשֵׁ֖ל (ruling) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt).

וַיָּ֣פָג (And went numb) לִבּ֔וֹ (his heart) כִּ֥י (for) לֹא־ (not) הֶאֱמִ֖ין (he did believe) לָהֶֽם׃ (them). 27  וַיְדַבְּר֣וּ (And they spoke) אֵלָ֗יו (to him) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) דִּבְרֵ֤י (the words) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) דִּבֶּ֣ר (had said) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them), וַיַּרְא֙ (and he saw) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣עֲגָל֔וֹת (the carts) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) שָׁלַ֥ח (had sent) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) לָשֵׂ֣את (to carry) אֹת֑וֹ (him), וַתְּחִ֕י (and revived) ר֖וּחַ (the spirit) יַעֲקֹ֥ב (of Jacob) אֲבִיהֶֽם׃ (their father).

28  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), רַ֛ב (Enough) עוֹד־ (still)! יוֹסֵ֥ף (Joseph) בְּנִ֖י (my son) חָ֑י (is alive). אֵֽלְכָ֥ה (I will go) וְאֶרְאֶ֖נּוּ (and I will see him) בְּטֶ֥רֶם (before) אָמֽוּת׃ (I die).
