Mourning and Burial for Jacob

1  וַיִּפֹּ֥ל (And fell) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) אָבִ֑יו (of his father), וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ (and he wept) עָלָ֖יו (over him) וַיִּשַּׁק־ (and he kissed) לֽוֹ׃ (him).

2  וַיְצַ֨ו (And commanded) יוֹסֵ֤ף (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) עֲבָדָיו֙ (his servants) אֶת־ (-) הָרֹ֣פְאִ֔ים (the physicians) לַחֲנֹ֖ט (to embalm) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֑יו (his father). וַיַּחַנְט֥וּ (And embalmed) הָרֹפְאִ֖ים (the physicians) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel). 3  וַיִּמְלְאוּ־ (And were fulfilled) לוֹ֙ (for him) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (forty) י֔וֹם (days), כִּ֛י (for) כֵּ֥ן (such) יִמְלְא֖וּ (are fulfilled) יְמֵ֣י (the days) הַחֲנֻטִ֑ים (for the embalming); וַיִּבְכּ֥וּ (and wept) אֹת֛וֹ (for him) מִצְרַ֖יִם (the Egyptians) שִׁבְעִ֥ים (seventy) יֽוֹם׃ (days).

4  וַיַּֽעַבְרוּ֙ (And passed) יְמֵ֣י (the days) בְכִית֔וֹ (of his weeping), וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (and spoke) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph) אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֥ית (the house) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (of Pharaoh), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אִם־ (If) נָ֨א (now) מָצָ֤אתִי (I have found) חֵן֙ (favor) בְּעֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ eyes), דַּבְּרוּ־ (speak), נָ֕א (please), בְּאָזְנֵ֥י (in the ears) פַרְעֹ֖ה (of Pharaoh), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying): 5  אָבִ֞י (My father) הִשְׁבִּיעַ֣נִי (made me swear), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), הִנֵּ֣ה (Behold), אָנֹכִי֮ (I) מֵת֒ (am dying); בְּקִבְרִ֗י (in my grave) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) כָּרִ֤יתִי (I dug) לִי֙ (for myself) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan), שָׁ֖מָּה (there) תִּקְבְּרֵ֑נִי (you shall bury me). וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) אֶֽעֱלֶה־ (let me go up), נָּ֛א (please), וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה (and bury) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֖י (my father), וְאָשֽׁוּבָה׃ (and I will return).

6  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh), עֲלֵ֛ה (Go up) וּקְבֹ֥ר (and bury) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֖יךָ (your father), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) הִשְׁבִּיעֶֽךָ׃ (he made you swear).

7  וַיַּ֥עַל (And went up) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) לִקְבֹּ֣ר (to bury) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֑יו (his father), וַיַּֽעֲל֨וּ (and went up) אִתּ֜וֹ (with him) כָּל־ (all) עַבְדֵ֤י (the servants) פַרְעֹה֙ (of Pharaoh), זִקְנֵ֣י (the elders) בֵית֔וֹ (of his house), וְכֹ֖ל (and all) זִקְנֵ֥י (the elders) אֶֽרֶץ־ (of the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt), 8  וְכֹל֙ (and all) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יוֹסֵ֔ף (of Joseph), וְאֶחָ֖יו (and his brothers), וּבֵ֣ית (and the house) אָבִ֑יו (of his father). רַ֗ק (Only) טַפָּם֙ (their little ones), וְצֹאנָ֣ם (and their flocks), וּבְקָרָ֔ם (and their herds) עָזְב֖וּ (they left) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) גֹּֽשֶׁן׃ (of Goshen).

9  וַיַּ֣עַל (And there went up) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him) גַּם־ (both) רֶ֖כֶב (chariots) גַּם־ (and) פָּרָשִׁ֑ים (horsemen); וַיְהִ֥י (and it was) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה (the camp) כָּבֵ֥ד (large) מְאֹֽד׃ (very). 10  וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ (And they came) עַד־ (to) גֹּ֣רֶן (the threshing floor) הָאָטָ֗ד (of Atad), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which is) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (beyond) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (the Jordan), וַיִּ֨סְפְּדוּ־ (and they mourned) שָׁ֔ם (there) מִסְפֵּ֛ד (with a lamentation) גָּד֥וֹל (great) וְכָבֵ֖ד (and solemn) מְאֹ֑ד (very), וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (and he made) לְאָבִ֛יו (for his father) אֵ֖בֶל (of mourning) שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) יָמִֽים׃ (days). 11  וַיַּ֡רְא (And saw) יוֹשֵׁב֩ (the inhabitant)

הָאָ֨רֶץ (of the land), הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֜י (the Canaanite), אֶת־ (-) הָאֵ֗בֶל (the mourning) בְּגֹ֙רֶן֙ (at the threshing floor) הָֽאָטָ֔ד (of Atad), וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and they said), אֵֽבֶל־ (Mourning) כָּבֵ֥ד (solemn) זֶ֖ה (this is) לְמִצְרָ֑יִם (for the Egyptians). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֞ן (thus) קָרָ֤א (was called) שְׁמָהּ֙ (its name) אָבֵ֣ל (Abel-) מִצְרַ֔יִם (mizraim), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which is) בְּעֵ֥בֶר (beyond) הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (the Jordan).

12  וַיַּעֲשׂ֥וּ (And did) בָנָ֖יו (his sons) ל֑וֹ (for him) כֵּ֖ן (so) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוָּֽם׃ (he had commanded them). 13  וַיִּשְׂא֨וּ (And carried) אֹת֤וֹ (him) בָנָיו֙ (his sons) אַ֣רְצָה (to the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan), וַיִּקְבְּר֣וּ (and buried) אֹת֔וֹ (him) בִּמְעָרַ֖ת (in the cave) שְׂדֵ֣ה (of the field) הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֑ה (of Machpelah), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) קָנָה֩ (bought) אַבְרָהָ֨ם (Abraham) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׂדֶ֜ה (the field) לַאֲחֻזַּת־ (for a possession) קֶ֗בֶר (of a burial place) מֵאֵ֛ת (from) עֶפְרֹ֥ן (Ephron) הַחִתִּ֖י (the Hittite), עַל־ (before) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) מַמְרֵֽא׃ (of Mamre).

14  וַיָּ֨שָׁב (And returned) יוֹסֵ֤ף (Joseph) מִצְרַ֙יְמָה֙ (to Egypt), ה֣וּא (he), וְאֶחָ֔יו (and his brothers), וְכָל־ (and all) הָעֹלִ֥ים (who went up) אִתּ֖וֹ (with him) לִקְבֹּ֣ר (to bury) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֑יו (his father), אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) קָבְר֥וֹ (he had buried) אֶת־ (-) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father).

Joseph Comforts His Brothers

15  וַיִּרְא֤וּ (And saw) אֲחֵֽי־ (the brothers) יוֹסֵף֙ (of Joseph) כִּי־ (that) מֵ֣ת (was dead) אֲבִיהֶ֔ם (their father), וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and they said), ל֥וּ (Perhaps) יִשְׂטְמֵ֖נוּ (will hate us) יוֹסֵ֑ף (Joseph), וְהָשֵׁ֤ב (and returning) יָשִׁיב֙ (he will return) לָ֔נוּ (to us) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הָ֣רָעָ֔ה (the evil) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) גָּמַ֖לְנוּ (we did) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (to him).

16  וַיְצַוּ֕וּ (And they commanded) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אָבִ֣יךָ (Your father) צִוָּ֔ה (commanded) לִפְנֵ֥י (before) מוֹת֖וֹ (his death), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 17  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) תֹאמְר֣וּ (you⁺ shall say) לְיוֹסֵ֗ף (to Joseph): אָ֣נָּ֡א (I beg you) שָׂ֣א (forgive), נָ֠א (please), פֶּ֣שַׁע (the trespass) אַחֶ֤יךָ (of your brothers), וְחַטָּאתָם֙ (and their sin), כִּי־ (for) רָעָ֣ה (evil) גְמָל֔וּךָ (they did to you). וְעַתָּה֙ (And now), שָׂ֣א (forgive), נָ֔א (please), לְפֶ֥שַׁע (the trespass) עַבְדֵ֖י (of the servants) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (of the God) אָבִ֑יךָ (of your father).

וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ (And wept) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) בְּדַבְּרָ֥ם (when they spoke) אֵלָֽיו׃ (to him). 18  וַיֵּלְכוּ֙ (And went) גַּם־ (also) אֶחָ֔יו (his brothers) וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ (and fell down) לְפָנָ֑יו (before his face); וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and they said), הִנֶּ֥נּֽוּ (Behold), לְךָ֖ (we are your) לַעֲבָדִֽים׃ (servants).

19  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) אֲלֵהֶ֛ם (to them) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph), אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֑אוּ (fear), כִּ֛י (for) הֲתַ֥חַת (in the place) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) אָֽנִי׃ (am I)? 20  וְאַתֶּ֕ם (And you⁺), חֲשַׁבְתֶּ֥ם (you⁺ intended) עָלַ֖י (against me) רָעָ֑ה (evil), אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) חֲשָׁבָ֣הּ (intended it) לְטֹבָ֔ה (for good), לְמַ֗עַן (in order) עֲשֹׂ֛ה (to bring about) כַּיּ֥וֹם (a day) הַזֶּ֖ה (like this), לְהַחֲיֹ֥ת (to keep alive) עַם־ (people) רָֽב׃ (many). 21  וְעַתָּה֙ (And now) אַל־ (not) תִּירָ֔אוּ (fear); אָנֹכִ֛י (I) אֲכַלְכֵּ֥ל (will provide for) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) וְאֶֽת־ (and) טַפְּכֶ֑ם (your⁺ little ones). וַיְנַחֵ֣ם (And he comforted) אוֹתָ֔ם (them) וַיְדַבֵּ֖ר (and he spoke) עַל־ (to) לִבָּֽם׃ (their heart).

The Death of Joseph

22  וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב (And dwelt) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם (in Egypt), ה֖וּא (he) וּבֵ֣ית (and the house) אָבִ֑יו (of his father). וַיְחִ֣י (And lived) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph) מֵאָ֥ה (a hundred) וָעֶ֖שֶׂר (and ten) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years). 23  וַיַּ֤רְא (And saw) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) לְאֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim) בְּנֵ֖י (sons) שִׁלֵּשִׁ֑ים (the third generation). גַּ֗ם (Also) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) מָכִיר֙ (of Machir) בֶּן־ (son) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh) יֻלְּד֖וּ (were born) עַל־ (on) בִּרְכֵּ֥י (the knees) יוֹסֵֽף׃ (of Joseph).

24  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָ֔יו (his brothers), אָנֹכִ֖י (I) מֵ֑ת (am dying). וֵֽאלֹהִ֞ים (And God) פָּקֹ֧ד (attending) יִפְקֹ֣ד (will attend) אֶתְכֶ֗ם (to you⁺) וְהֶעֱלָ֤ה (and bring) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) מִן־ (out) הָאָ֣רֶץ (of the land) הַזֹּ֔את (this), אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (of which) נִשְׁבַּ֛ע (He swore) לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם (to Abraham), לְיִצְחָ֖ק (to Isaac), וּֽלְיַעֲקֹֽב׃ (and to Jacob). 25  וַיַּשְׁבַּ֣ע (And made swear) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), פָּקֹ֨ד (Attending) יִפְקֹ֤ד (will attend) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (to you⁺), וְהַעֲלִתֶ֥ם (and you⁺ shall carry up) אֶת־ (-) עַצְמֹתַ֖י (my bones) מִזֶּֽה׃ (from this place).

26  וַיָּ֣מָת (And died) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph) בֶּן־ (a son) מֵאָ֥ה (of a hundred) וָעֶ֖שֶׂר (and ten) שָׁנִ֑ים (years). וַיַּחַנְט֣וּ (And they embalmed) אֹת֔וֹ (him), וַיִּ֥ישֶׂם (and he was put) בָּאָר֖וֹן (in a coffin) בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃ (in Egypt).
