ContextStephen's Address to the Sanhedrin
…35This Moses, whom they refused, saying: Who hath appointed thee prince and judge? Him God sent to be prince and redeemer, by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the burning bush. 36He brought them out, doing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea and in the desert, forty years. 37This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel: A prophet shall God raise up to you of your own brethren, as myself. Him shall you hear.…
For I will stretch forth my hand, and will strike Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst of them: after these he will let you go.
But I shall harden his heart, and shall multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt.
Which being expired, the same day all the army of the Lord went forth out of the land of Egypt.
And when Moses had stretched forth his hand over the sea, the Lord took it away by a strong and burning wind blowing all the night, and turned it into dry ground: and the water was divided.

Your children shall wander in the desert forty years, and shall bear your fornication, until the carcasses of their fathers be consumed in the desert,
To day if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts:
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart.
Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not.
And God turned and gave them up to serve the host of heaven, as it is written in the books of the prophets: Did you offer victims and sacrifices to me for forty years, in the desert, O house of Israel?

Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the desert,
Where your fathers tempted me, proved and saw my works,
Not according to the testament which I made to their fathers, on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt: because they continued not in my testament: and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
