Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us. Look and see our disgrace!1LORD, remember what has happened to us. Look, and see our disgrace!
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners.2Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners.
We have become fatherless orphans; our mothers are widows.3We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are widows.
We must buy the water we drink; our wood comes at a price.4We must pay for the water we drink; our wood comes at a price.
We are closely pursued; we are weary and find no rest.5We are closely pursued; we are tired, and no one offers us rest.
We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.6We made a treaty with Egypt and with Assyria, to get enough food.
Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear their punishment.7Our fathers sinned; they no longer exist, but we bear their punishment.
Slaves rule over us; there is no one to deliver us from their hands.8Slaves rule over us; no one rescues us from them.
We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness.9We secure our food at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness.
Our skin is as hot as an oven with fever from our hunger.10Our skin is as hot as an oven from the ravages of hunger.
Women have been ravished in Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah.11Women have been raped in Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah.
Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders receive no respect.12Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect.
Young men toil at millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood.13Young men labor at millstones; boys stumble under loads of wood.
The elders have left the city gate; the young men have stopped their music.14The elders have left the city gate, the young men, their music.
Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.15Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.
The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!16The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned.
Because of this, our hearts are faint; because of these, our eyes grow dim—17Because of this, our heart is sick; because of these, our eyes grow dim:
because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate, patrolled by foxes.18because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate and has jackals prowling in it.
You, O LORD, reign forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation.19You, LORD, are enthroned forever; your throne endures from generation to generation.
Why have You forgotten us forever? Why have You forsaken us for so long?20Why do you continually forget us, abandon us for our entire lives?
Restore us to Yourself, O LORD, so we may return; renew our days as of old,21LORD, bring us back to yourself, so we may return; renew our days as in former times,
unless You have utterly rejected us and remain angry with us beyond measure.22unless you have completely rejected us and are intensely angry with us.
