Psalm 88
ISV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
LORD, God of my salvation, by day and by night I cry out before you.1O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you.
Let my prayer come before you; listen to my cry.2Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry!
For my life is filled with troubles as I approach Sheol. 3For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol.
I am considered as one of those descending into the Pit, like a mighty man without strength,4I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am a man who has no strength,
released to remain with the dead, lying in a grave like a corpse, remembered no longer, and cut off from your power.5like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand.
You have assigned me to the lowest part of the Pit, to the darkest depths.6You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep.
Your anger lies heavily upon me; you pound me with all your waves. Interlude7Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah
You caused my acquaintances to shun me; you make me extremely abhorrent to them. Restrained, I am unable to go out.8You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
My eyes languish on account of my affliction; all day long I call out to you, LORD, I spread out my hands to you.9my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call upon you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you.
Can you perform wonders for the dead? Can departed spirits stand up to praise you? Interlude10Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
Can your gracious love be declared in the grave or your faithfulness in Abaddon? 11Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Can your awesome deeds be known in darkness or your righteousness in the land of oblivion?12Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
As for me, I cry out to you LORD, and in the morning my prayer greets you.13But I, O LORD, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you.
Why, LORD, have you rejected me? Why have you hidden your face from me?14O LORD, why do you cast my soul away? Why do you hide your face from me?
Since my youth I have been oppressed and in danger of death. I bear your dread and am overwhelmed.15Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.
Your burning anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me.16Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me.
Like waters, they engulf me all day long; they surround me on all sides.17They surround me like a flood all day long; they close in on me together.
You caused my friend and neighbor to shun me; and my acquaintances are confused. 18You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me; my companions have become darkness.
