Psalm 88
ISV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionNew Living Translation
LORD, God of my salvation, by day and by night I cry out before you.1O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.
Let my prayer come before you; listen to my cry.2Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry.
For my life is filled with troubles as I approach Sheol. 3For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near.
I am considered as one of those descending into the Pit, like a mighty man without strength,4I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left.
released to remain with the dead, lying in a grave like a corpse, remembered no longer, and cut off from your power.5They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care.
You have assigned me to the lowest part of the Pit, to the darkest depths.6You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.
Your anger lies heavily upon me; you pound me with all your waves. Interlude7Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude
You caused my acquaintances to shun me; you make me extremely abhorrent to them. Restrained, I am unable to go out.8You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.
My eyes languish on account of my affliction; all day long I call out to you, LORD, I spread out my hands to you.9My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my hands to you for mercy.
Can you perform wonders for the dead? Can departed spirits stand up to praise you? Interlude10Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude
Can your gracious love be declared in the grave or your faithfulness in Abaddon? 11Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?
Can your awesome deeds be known in darkness or your righteousness in the land of oblivion?12Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?
As for me, I cry out to you LORD, and in the morning my prayer greets you.13O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.
Why, LORD, have you rejected me? Why have you hidden your face from me?14O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?
Since my youth I have been oppressed and in danger of death. I bear your dread and am overwhelmed.15I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.
Your burning anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me.16Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me.
Like waters, they engulf me all day long; they surround me on all sides.17They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely.
You caused my friend and neighbor to shun me; and my acquaintances are confused. 18You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.
